Competitive Drop Pod list

So quick question:

Is it at all possible to run an all Drop Pod-list with any of the current codices - and stay competitive (as in, more than LGS/friendly wins)? What build and what codex in that case?

I keep leaning towards Pedro, but not sure if it actually holds enough water in the current meta.

Thanks for any input! :D

There is someone at my local club who uses Blood Angels with a 7(!!) drop-pod list. He tends to win, but since I do not own the BA codex, I have no idea on the specifics.

Either way, the BA codex might be a good place to look.

A big thing about Blood Angels is the fact that their (Troops) Assault Squads get dual meltagun option (three if the Sarge has an IP) and a discount on the Pod itself... that pretty much beats Sternguard imho, even with Pedro

Space Wolves are, IMHO, the unrivalled masters of Drop Pod armies.

Cheap grey hunter squads with counter attack and two special weapons? Yes please. Long Fangs, dreads... they have everything you need.

Using drop pods and vanilla marines, you are strongly encouraged to use a special character. Which character you choose will affect your army build greatly.

Vulcan is usually the first choice as you can load up on meltas and flamers and cleanse your landing zone.

Pedro is a good choice if you plan to load up on sterguard (which he makes scoring). Sterngaurd are amazing in drop pods, but are a shooting unit and not an assault unit. Even with Pedro, sternguard (and most vanilla marine units) cannot take on assault specialist in melee.

Some people really like Lysander in a drop pod because he is so tough.

Remember you can put locator beacons on pods and bring in some unit via deep strike, teleport, or Librarians gate of infinity power.

Blood angels will likely have one of the best assault pod armies (with feel no pain and maybe furious charge). They also have some terrific melta weapons.

Space wolves will likely have a more versatile pod army as they have good access to special weapons and counter attack. They generally assault better than vanilla marines but worse than blood angels.

I dont have any experience playing having given up learning most of the rules with 6th so close, but it seems to me that

Pedro and sternguard in Dp with locator beacons would do well with vanguard vets and jump packs. Getting some good use out of heroic intervention (i think thats it)

Pedro

MotF

3 sternguard (droppods)

Tacs (droppods)

3 vanguard (jumppacks)

Dreads, Tfc, Devs (droppods)

I hear Black Templars are also viable if you want to run a drop-pod list.

My advice would be to wait until 6th ed is released and see how that changes the rules and see if they do any large codex FAQs/Patches/Updates when 6th ed is released as this might change how viable different armies are.

An all Drop Pod list is useless in a competitive setting. Your opponent will just all reserve his army. At that point it's a lose lose. If you leave the squads in pods they'll either get shot and/or assaultedif you drop them close or they'll get ignored. If you drop empty pods you just paid for 150+ points for useless easy KP's and now your marines are dead men walking. Drop Pods are good in either a single unit, a suicide unit. Or at max 3, giving you two units using pods, one without.

All drop pod lists are a really cool fluffy idea, but they don't work in competitive games.
