Pre-Heresy World Eaters Codex...

First, let me say hi. I'm a new member but I've known about B&C for a while and been a follower of 40K for 10 years now.

I always see people in a kerfuffle over which codex they should use for pre-heresy marines and this led me to the idea, why not make a pre heresy codex? Now this could be 1 codex (for all legions), 2 codices (one for traitors, one for loyalists) or one for each legion (this might take a while). So I thought, I could give this a go myself, trying to make it as accurate and balanced as possible. For the moment I have decided to start with the World Eaters, and I'll focus on their more unique units/items etc.. I'll be looking at various different codices. Here's what I have so far:

Tactical Marines:

Stats will be similar to normal tactical marines except with squad sizes of 5-20, Fearless, Furious Charge, carrying a bolt pistol and chainsword as opposed to a bolter, and different weapon upgrade options (e.g. Plasma Pistols). I might also make the chainaxe an optional +1 Pt/Model upgrade (allows max of 4+ armour save?). I could also give them Feel no Pain, but that might be overdoing it. Thoughts?.

Assault Marines:

These will be the same differences as above but for a normal assault marine squad.

However, my main issue is getting the points right for these units. A normal tactical squad is around 15 pts per model + 15 pts for the sergeant. Which would lead me to think 18 pts per model is about right (excl. Feel no Pain) based on the +3 Pts for furious charge in the old space marine codex (traits section). Now assault marines (in the current C:SM) are 3 points more (so 21 pts per model). However, I get the feeling that the new rules would be more beneficial to a world eaters assault marine so maybe this should be more. Additionally, the +3 points for furious charge is from the traits section of the old codex where assault marines were worth a lot more in terms of points.

So what do the people of B&C think?

First off, this would probably be best in the homegrown rules forum. It'll probably be moved there anyway.

On to the issue. Chain axes no longer have the 4+ Armour Save thing, but rending would probably be fine. I don't see why you have to change weapon options, WE would be just as likely to burn or 'melta' an enemy as anyone else and if you completely remove special weapons you put the army at a significant disadvantage, as then only their Devastors can take down tanks. Feel No Pain would be way too much as well. Have you thought about giving them Rage?

Oh my bad, newb mistake there with the forum section.

Just to clarify, when I said change weapons options I meant upgrade bolt pistol to plasma pistol instead of bolter to plasma gun. Stuff like that. It'll probably be similar to the current berserker rules, not sure about melta guns though.

Looks like I will ignore the Feel No Pain rule then. I kinda wanted to leave Rage out of the equation because that feels like more of a Khorne thing to me, although in the current C:CSM, they don't have it either. Not to mention, an entire army of World Eaters could mean that everything sorta gets left on auto-pilot.

What about the points for such units then?

I'd still give them the full weapons. I'm sure they'd employ big guns just as much as chain axes.

Rage would be your choice to include. For points, I'd say 19 points (SM are now 16 points) with furious charge and a chainsword. I'd charge an extra 2 points for a chain axe, and make it rending instead of the decreased armour save.

Regarding points. I just realised that seems a tad strange. Chaos Marines are 15 pts each, and the price of the first 5 in a SM squad work out to as the same number of points as chaos marines. Smells fishy...

Can it not just be moved?

go to the website, create an account and then download the copy of the Age of the Emperor expansion. You have to log in to see the website downloads and the forums.

It contains rules, units and characters for all Legions, before and during the heresy as well as extensive rules for units and vehicles in M31. It will be getting an update after the release of 6th edition to bring it more into line with the new edition and the latest HH fluff.

All you need to do is convince others to either a) allow you to use the ruleset or ;) fine a group of players who are interested in it.

Well, I never became a member, but I still get the PDFs ect. Strange. But yes, the AotE is the best ruleset I've found so far, but if you want to try and better it, be my guest :P
