Ovidius Incertus
I'd like to do some blood 'n gore using the Lonewolf method here: GORE! Calls for GW black ink. What can I use instead of this? Will Badab Black substitute, or is it not black enough? I'll happily go out and buy a black ink, if necessary, I just don't want to get the wrong stuff. GumbaFish
Black ink is much stronger than badab black. I'd be curious to see what is equal to the old black ink though, I have two pots but always like a backup =) I know there is vallejo game color black ink, though I haven't tried it so can't comment on whether or not it performs similarly to the old GW black ink. Lucien Eilam
Winsor & Newton Inks are pretty good. Personally though, I add Tamiya Clear Blue to Clear Red for fresh blood. It gives it a richer colour, instead of just darker. Subtle Discord
I'll second Tamiya Clear Red for blood. The stuff even looks like blood in the bottle. And most of the best gore I've seen seems to use it. If you want a source of actual Black Ink (or any colour for that matter) just pick up some quality ink from a good Art or Hobby Store. As has been said, Black Ink is not anything like Badab Black Wash. Ink is pure pigment in a very thin/watery base. It is very strong and flows almost like water. Washes are a diluted pigment suspended in a much thicker acrylic base. They are much more subtle than ink, and will flow more like proper paint. elmo
I know there is vallejo game color black ink I use this and thin it down again with about 30% water and it works great. Well worth investing in. Ovidius Incertus
Thanks, all. I'm lucky (or, as regards my wallet, unlucky) to have a craft store a scant 1.5 miles away and a hobby store literally across the street. I got the Tamiya Clear Red there, so I assume they have Clear Blue as well, and the craft store has a good stock of inks. I don't think the hobby store carries Vallejo though. Secret Weapon Minitures Inc. Make outstanding Washes and weathering pigments, it fae better than GW. striker8
Vallejo inks are pretty close to GW's old ones. The only real difference I have found is the GW inks were water soluble when dry and the Vallejo's aren't.
