Grand Master Belial's ETL Vow

Recommended Posts

I, Grand Master Belial, answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete:

5-man Dev Squad (2LC & 2HB) - 220 pts

5-man Dev Squad (2PC, MM, ML) - 215 pts

5-man Scout Squad (Close combat) - 95 pts

5-man Scout Squad (Sniper) - 105 pts

1 Ravenwing Attack Squadron - 400 pts

from Codex: Dark Angels of total value 1035 Points on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to the Unforgiven and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end.

So I bought the two Scout Boxes, the Devastator Box, Dark Angel Veteran Box (for the other 5 Devastator Marines) and have been sitting on the Ravenwing Box Set for a year.

I separated from the wife and now I have time to myself. Bring on the paint and time to flesh out more of the combined Unforgiven Force of mine.

Unlike my LPC Challenge, these are meant to supplement my Unforgiven force made up of members from all Unforgiven Chapters.

Just finished gluing the bikes together. I'll paint them up separate from their riders.

I still need to start the Devastators.

Good luck Grand Master! This looks like a big task... Love the idea of many Unforgiven working together!

It's very promising indeed... Is the Orangey- Yellow scouts what I think it is? :)

Orange Scout is my new Questing Brother that I did for the BotA Competition

Yellow Scout is an Angels of Vigilance

Yes, much luck, Grand Master Belial!

Sorry to hear about the separation (and take so long to respond to the news), but hopefully it was a chapter that needed ending and you can move on to happier circumstances!

Very cool idea with the scouts being from different chapters! That's an interesting concept really, as it could reinforce the "Legion operations" type theme, scouts get traded around to interact with battle-brothers from different Unforgiven so that maybe later they feel more comfortable working together and fosters a place where honor-ties can develop, etc. Might be neat to develop that into some fleshed out fluff!

This should turn out some really cool models!

I put myself at 40% done. Just painting, minor assembly and basing to go!

Devastators are the furthest behind but I am catching them up because I am painting each successor group together. Oddly it is the Dark Angels that are the furtherest behind because each is almost a different color.

Got rained out yesterday from work and did some more painting and put together a few of the Devastators. I think this puts me around 50%.

Having some trouble with the warm colors cracking as they dry; I am trying to thin them down a bit with some acrylic flow release. I hope that helps.

God Bless Vallejo's Liquid Black Primer. It is saving me a lot of headaches painting those areas the spray can missed. I'll post a group shot when I am finished.

The only other painting quirks is that the DA Dev has a robe and is not the Sarge. So he does not warrant the bone robe. I put a brown robe on the AoR Dev Sergeant. So I am stuck between a green or gray robe. Any ideas?

The other quirk is my own DA Successor the Saints of the Angels. They are meant to be virtuous and so I paint them so that there is no black anywhere on the armor. This leaves with what to do about the SotA Scout and his boots since his fatigues are brown. As it stands right now, I painted them a darker brown. Let's see how it goes.

Hopefully I'll be done early with work and can slap on some more paint.

Regarding the robes do you have some sort of internal rule to limit white robes to sergeants? Because fluff wise anyone can get it. In any case avoid green - green robes on DAs are a bit meh, no matter how well executed the final result is. I also suggest that visually it's more pleasing to have each chapter with a single color for robes - so here's another argument to keep it white. If you want your robes to denote membership to the DW (don't know if this is the case) it creates an interesting narrative to have the sergeant as a more junior member of the DW (although more senior in military rank) and having the Trooper keeping an eye on his sergeant under the edicts of the Inner Circle. How about that? Paranoid enough? hahahaha... (play on the Nestor & Boreas storyline) I really don't know if this is your cup of tea but it's a fun way to justify everything and have white robes all over the place. Anyway, for DAs? keep the robe white - Captain Semper's 2c! B)

The boots is a tricky one. Good luck! ;)

Seriuosly though, I thnik different shade of brown is your best shot. Have you considered reddish brown?

Yes the reason for the lack of bone robes is the marine is not inducted into the Deathwing. I like the Reddish brown idea and may run with that one.

Oh well, Time to get to painting. The DA needs another 1K points.

Since I am at work I cannot post pictures.

I am 85% now and have started to put finishing touches on the marines before basing them. At which point they would be painted 100% and would complete the vow. It is supposed to pour tomorrow so I might be able to finish up tomorrow.

The red brown robe turned out too much like Father Christmas so he went to brown and the AoA Sergeant joined him (although the later will get a bone band to make him special. I need to give him a backpack and assembly is done!

The red brown robe turned out too much like Father Christmas ...

Hahahaha - an unforseen eventuality! Oh well... :D

Good to hear you're having progress there GM Belial! Let's see if you can make this tomorrow - that'll be grand!

Painting Complete!!!

The Basing needs a black wash and then it is done, but this will make this VOW COMPLETED!!!

Attack Bike is done in the colors of the Angels of Absolution with Ravenwing inspired details.

The Ravenwing took a page from the Terminators. The left side bears the Ravenwing icon while the right bears the parent chapter badge. I had thought to reverse it but the sculpted pads are still way better than my freehand skills.

I threw in some variants to try out different looks. Each is unique but identifiable, the way of the Space Marines. The Land Speeder has the sensor array from the Apocalypse kit with the two Whirlwinds and a Land Speeder. I have the one Whitlwind at 95%, the other at 15% and the Land Speeder is only primed. I seriously doubt I can paint them or 3 Dreadnoughts in a week so I will not vow it because we need the points.

Side note: I need to recheck points on each. I think I might have included a plasma pistol on the Scout Sergeant but I didn't have one in my bits box.
