Magnet Screw Up

Recommended Posts

I was in the process of adding magnetized arms to one of my Dreadnoughts, and had a screw up: I made holes in the FW resin arms with a drill bit of precisely the same diameter of the rare earth magnet, and pushed the magnet all the way in with the wrong side/polarity side out (I don't know how I did it since I did check/test it ahead of time, but oh well).

I haven't been able to pull it back out using other magnets; it's stuck in there good. I'm worried about damaging the fragile, and expensive resin arm, too, so figured I should ask here before taking further action.

I'm wondering if I should try to heat up the arm a bit, perhaps in hot water, to allow the material to expand and loosen up; is this a good, or a bad idea?

Anyway, I'm looking for a low-risk solution from those with more experience working with resin.

Thanks,

Valerian

happens to me every so often. i tend to go the knife route and work the hole a bit wider. every so often the magnet is more than stuck so i resort to a paperclip sized hole from the other side to poke the magnet out with a pin. greenstuff smooths out the scar without a trace....

I hadn't even thought about that. Good plan for a last resort. Might try the freezer first then try to use the exacto knife. Any additional hazards to putting it in freezer? Would that make the resin excessively fragile?

Thanks for the responses so far.

A stronger magnet might do the trick or try and super glue a cocktail stick to the magnet and pull it out.

I've done the same thing. I manage to get the magnet back out by using a smaller drill but and crazy glueing the magnet to that to pull it back out. I must admit it was a bit scary to think that I may have just glued a drill bit to a mistake. I like the cocktail stick idea. It's much safer.

or you could just drill the magnet away to nothing and insert a new one? Haven't resorted to that yet myself and you run the risk of slipping and punching a hole through the entire piece.

Glad to hear you got it all resolved.

I wouldn't recommend trying to drill through a rare earth magnet. It's not the safest idea.

For those who mess this up in the future, you can also drill a small hole NEXT to the misaligned magnet, insert a paperclip or piece of brass rod down the small hole and pry upward to pop the magnet out. I actually screwed the polarity of a magnet up on a metal Dread arm, and had to use this method myself. Just be sure to drill deep enough that you get past the depth of the magnet.

Nice that you got it fixed, i just HATE to damage any of those expensive FW stuff!

Hmmm just got my magnets, not used them so far...since i wanna use 3x1mm magnets i better use a 3,5mm drill!

I also want to magnetize my metal dread, i used one 3x1mm is strong enough to hold a metal arm, without using a magnet in the arm, just a 5-6 round and slim metal disc so polartiy even doesnt matter...will test this on a CC metal arm i guess!

I love this forum, very inspiring in so many ways even if learning by others mistakes!
