Rename the Legions

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, this actually has a practical task.

I've used the post Unification War state of the Imperium - too the best of my knowledge - in a Your Nation Your Rule RPG game.

I got permission from the GM to let me have the legions - but a limited number. However he has put down the law on that they cannot have the same name and neither can their Primarches. Now I've got my list of 11 legions which I am planning on creating soon, however I am drawing blanks on most of them for re-names, and some that I have renamed I rather poor. So what I'm asking from you is well...

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

I should say that some of them are going to be turning traitor at one point and I'll point them out for you; also the chaos gods are down to three now and have slightly change. But that isn't really that important. Anyway here's the list and also which Legion they will be - and the rename I've given them if I have. Any help will be greatly appreciated on any and all names - including Primarches.

Also on an extra note they will still be very similar to what they are now, but some will have been merged with missing legions (I'll post up their general purpose, and Primarch purpose when the Imperium is complete)

Legion I:

Original Name: Blood Angels

Suggested Name: Scarlet Host/Angelo "*"/Bloodied Host

Style: Same as standard Blood Angels + a small bit of Emps Children

Potential Primarch Names: Mecury/Hermes/Heamastan/Angelos Roseus

Potential Primarch Names: Castor&Pollux/Primus&Postremus

Legion III:

Original Name: Salamanders

Suggested Name: Dragonborn/Praelia Ignis/

Role in the Future: Artificers and Protectors of the People.

Potential Primarch Names: Mulciber/Iusti Flamma/Caminus Incus

Legion IV:

Original Name: Space Wolves

Suggested Name: Tundra Knights/Winter Lords/Lords of Winter

Style: 100% the same as the "standard" Wolves (love 'em to death)

Role in the Future: Executioner

Potential Primarch Names: Caeli Draconis/

Legion V:

Original Name: Word Bearers (Cursed)

Suggested Name: Onyx Paladins/(Onyx) Purifiers

Style: Same as current (although I don't really know how they do at the minute other than slow ;) )

Role in the Future: Voice of the Emperor

Potential Primarch Names: Purgatus

Legion VI:

Original Name: Luna Wolves

Suggested Name: Nova Lions

Style: Again same as current + a bit of the Dark Angels (however their current style is a bit unspecific)

Role in the Future: Commander of the Armies

Potential Primarch Names: Ariel

Legion VII:

Original Name: Death Guard (Cursed)

Suggested Name: Tomb Wardens/Legio Smerti

Style: Really same as normal, although a bigger legion

Role in the Future: Terror and Control

Legion VIII:

Original Name: Ultramarines

Suggested Name: Son's of Herakles/The Phalanx/Legio Ultra

Style: Same as now + the tactical genius side of Dark Angels

Role in the Future: Bureaucratic, controllers of the Empire

Potential Primarch Names: Scipio Ultranius/Herakles

Legion IX:

Original Name: World Eaters (Cursed)

Suggested Name: Sabre Lords/Warlords/Blood Reavers

Style: Not as brutal as the normal World Eaters, bit more sword play than hacking. But still hot-headed

Role in the Future: Shock troopers, primary front-line troopers for any future assault

Potential Primarch Names: Orgetorix

Legion X:

Original Name: Thousand Sons

Suggested Name: Anubites/Sons of Ra/Pharoahs Children/Scarabs of Red

Style: Psychic etc (standard)

Role in the Future: Fore-tellers and anti-daemonic soldiers

Potential Primarch Names: Hermes Trismegistus/Ra/Thoth/Oculus Tempestas

Legion XI:

Original Name: Iron Warriors (Cursed)

Suggested Name: Praetorians/Imperial Shields

Style: Standard + Imperial Fists + Garrison (large legion for garrison duties)

Role in the Future: Defenders and Siege-masters

Potential Primarch Names: Ferrum Clipeus

I should simply state now I have no names what-so-ever for the Primarches, but all of them will be essentially the same person so go mental

Thanks for any and all help. If you want me to tell you the gods and what they'll be about I will. And I will join them with their traitors, but it isn't needed much in my opinion

thanks again

Athiair :tu:

ps. if you want to do paint schemes feel free, but I'll be getting around to it and it isn't necessary

edit: highlighted name is current preffered, if two then yellow is primary and green is secondary. Of course some only have one name so far and will not be highlighted

Legion II:

Original Name: Alpha Legions

Suggested Name: Dreadknights

Legion IV:

Original Name: Space Wolves

Suggested Name: Winter Lords/Lords of Winter

Legion VIII:

Original Name: Ultramarines

Suggested Name: The Phalanx - play on the Greco-Roman side a bit?

Legion IX:

Original Name: World Eaters (Cursed)

Suggested Name: Warlords

Legion X:

Original Name: Thousand Sons

Suggested Name: Sons of Ra - still has that Egyptian feel

My own, minor, input for you.

I'd go for just Hydra as the name for the Alpha Legion, it's tongue in cheek and fits the secret police/spy type organisation.

Ultramarines: Legio Ultra, nice and simple.

Primarch: Scipio Ultranius.

I love the Lords of Winter for the Wolves previously mentioned.

The potential name for the Wolves I really do like the sound of, Winter Lords/Lords of Winter sounds cool

Dreadknights I'm not so sure on, makes them sound too front line for me, but it's up there.

The Phalanx sounds more like a squad or company, but it's better than mine. And Legio Ultra is a bit samey but then again up for consideration

Warlords sounds great probably better than mine

Son's of Ra would have to be handled correctly, but should be workable

Not an advocate for the Hydra name for the Alpha Legion, with something else like Hydramarines or something it could work (fyi Hydramarines sounds like they're made of water)

And Purifiers is very cool sounding

For Sanguinius.

You want the Blood Angels to be the face of the Empire. Angels are God's messengers, heralds, the face of god if you will. You could go with a name that referred to angels like Angelo and then a colour word like red, ruddy, rubrum etc.

The Greek god Hermes was the messenger of the gods and wore a pair of winged sandals, he was also the patron god/saint of ambassadors, diplomats and public speakers. The Roman god Mercury was very similar.

For Horus.

You are calling his Legion the Nova Lions. The hebrew name Ariel means 'Lion of God' which would fit in well with Ariel being the son of the Emperor.

For Angron.

Anything to do with violence really.

I always liked the Celtic name Orgetorix which means something like Warrior King or King of Killers.

For Sanguinius.

Perhaps this name would be better as a replacement for Magnus, but how about Hermes Trismegistus?

Thousand Sons = Sons of Ra

Primarch = Ra

Blood Angels = The Bloodied Host

Primarch = Heamastan (Stan for short)

Alpha Legion = The hidden blades

Primarch(s) = Castor and Pollux

Space Wolves = Lords of Winter

Primarch = Fidoeous rex

World Eaters = The Butchers

Primarch = Rageman Supakill

Iron Warriors = Imperial Shields

Primarch = Scutum

That's just the random typings of an insomniac so feel free to ignore.

Paradill

Scutum? I see why he turned bad, the other kids picked on him at school calling him scrotum.

Castor and Pollux was all I could think of too. Found this on wiki:

The ancient Babylonians referred to the constellation [Gemini - "The Twins"] as Mastabba Galgal, the 'Great Twins', and commemorated within it the mythical friendship of the demi-god Gilgamesh and his mortal friend Enkidu, who fought against the gods in twelve adventures.[7] Stricken by grief at Enkidu's death, Gilgamesh pursued a quest to ensure his own immortality.

The ancient Greek tale of the egg-born brothers Castor and Pollux, born to their mother Leda after she was seduced by Zeus in the guise of a swan. Their consummation, on the same night as Leda lay with her husband, Sparta's King Tyndareus, resulted in the birth of immortal Pollux, who possessed great physical strength, and mortal Castor who possessed great ingenuity. Upon Castor's death Pollux begged Zeus to let him share his own immortality with his twin to keep them together and they were transformed into the Gemini constellation.[citation needed]

Thousand Sons... Pharoah's Children?

Primarch: Thoth? (Thoth is the egyptian god of magic and wisdom iirc) or Horus? (sort of already taken but he was God of the Pharoahs)

Blood Angels/World Eaters... Blood Reavers?

Primarch: Roseus? (based on the latin for red/rose coloured)

- They could have an inner circle called "The Court of the Crimson King", named after a certain British Prog band...

Sons of Horus/Luna Wolves/Ultramarines... Legio Prime?

Primarch: Primus?

Wow a lot can happen here in a week, some great ideas seriously. I'm so having jack o'neill! :P

Will update the main post soon with potential names and current preferred soon. Best thing about this is I have some time before I can even have these legions and primarches cause I have to make them first so feel free to keep them coming ;)

Thanks again

  • 2 weeks later...

Salamanders Primarch: Mulciber (latin for fire)

Space Wolves Primarch: Caeli Draconis (latin for Heaven's Jackal)? Wolverius?

Death Guard Primarch: Torvus (based on latin for grim as in grim reaper)

I myself decided I might start a pre heresy army, based on an alternate timeline with different Primarchs/Legions:

Primarch: Chronos

Legion: Sons of Chronos (original eh?)

Traits: Regenerative Ability (longer life expectancy); Few in numbers; Elites

Strategies: Idea is the legion spends lots of time (Chronos is the greek god of time) to devise strategies that are so detailed that no improvisation is neccessary after deployment, minimising losses. The legion is picky with recruits.

Now I need a colour scheme...

Salamanders: Name: Bellatores Ignis (Warriors of fire in Latin), Primarch: Iusti Flamma (Ios for short, righteous flame in Latin).

Thousand Sons: Name: Scarabs of Red, Primarch: Oculus Tempestas (resorting back to Latin, means eye of the storm. If he only has one eye again, I reckon this would be an awesome name).

Ultramarines: Name: Legio Smurfus, Primarch: Grandfather Smurf

Death Guard: Name: Legio Smerti (Legion of death in a hybrid of Russian and Latin), Primarch: Thanatos (Greek God of Death)

Great names I think everything has been covered now. Although a couple are a bit weak - I'm looking at you Castor and Pollux but I'm happy to go with it.

Thanks to all - this will remain open until the Primarches and Legions are named in the RP
