Pig Of Sparta
................ I can't think of anything to say that hasn't already been said. This looks amazing already and that's before your considerable painting talents have been applied to it! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the Warhound in particular and will keep an eye on this thread. Good luck with the Daemon :D cheers James Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/254368-commissiongolden-demon-hunting-bigger-game/page/2/#findComment-3092360 Share on other sites
winterdyne
That's all hand painted, apart from the primer. An airbrush can sometimes save time, and I'll be using it heavily on the titan, and for basecoating and zenithal work on the minis above, but for the groundwork it wasn't going to help, I'd have spent more time masking things off than painting. A good 1/4" wedge brush for the buildings and Bob's ya proverbial. NightHunters
Ah ha! Must invest in bigger brushes, must invest in bigger brushes!! No but seriously, for brush work that is just awesome, really looking forward to seeing it in the flesh come GD. winterdyne
I've been painting the IG for the base... as they're not power armour, I'm not sure I should have posted them... but you'd be missing out on part of the project if I didn't. Hell, there'll be xenos too, but I'm also working on the techpriest and he DOES have PA... :-) They do show a nice fast face technique that's applicable to marines: Tallarn flesh base. Ogryn flesh wash. Do eye white with a mix of VMA sand (this stuff is AWESOME) and white. Dot with a mix of Charadon Granite and black. Highlight flesh with tallarn flesh, then start mixing in the VMA sand (it's quite runny so it makes the mix GREAT for soft layering and feathering). After a couple of highlights, thin down a little shadow grey and glaze it under the eyes. Mix a little S. Grey and tallarn flesh and glaze that on where you want stubble. More highlights with a bit more flesh / sand mix. Takes maybe 15 minutes to do a whole face, including drying time. Very quick. :-) These chaps are pretty much done apart from the decals. I intend to get the rest of the IG done this week or early next, putting the total working time on them at about 35 hours (less than 4 hours per mini, so pretty quick jobs). I reckon about 40-50 hours on the 'nids, then it's on to the titan proper, which will probably weigh in at around 150 hours. The total time for the diorama should be around about 250 hours. http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/victor/warhound/warhound_wip13.jpg http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/victor/warhound/warhound_wip14.jpg http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/victor/warhound/warhound_wip15.jpg http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/victor/warhound/warhound_wip16.jpg Edit: The green is also SO how I'll do DA when I do them next. Vallejo Model Color Russian Green, highlighted with a little Rotting Flesh. Blends beautifully. winterdyne
Like I said, VMA sand. Brilliant stuff, I'd add it to my tea if it didn't taste so bad. AlexCrute
I dunno if you'll thank me or curse my name to the warp, but I think the Titan's pose could be improved. If it's too late then it's too late, and I wouldn't even mention it if it wasn't a GD entry, but... ...the beast's balance and momentum doesn't look entirely cohesive. The position of the right leg indicates the Titan is nearing the end of its step, but the right heel has yet to lift at all so there is still a bit more step left before the left foot hits the ground - even though the right foot is well behind the balance point. This means the Titan is moving at a fair clip. I think maybe the left leg is extended too far forward, given the position of the right. I think the leg position as it is would never happen in the Titan's normal gait. If the left leg could be contracted more to be more directly underneath the Titan's body I think the Titan would appear to be moving faster (much larger steps), and would look more natural and convincing as a result. If you elect change nothing, I totally understand. And you might win the GD anyway, but y'know perfection and all that... winterdyne
The pose as it stands is about right for the stride position that it's in, which is as you've said correctly just prior to the end of the stride. Going to the extreme is usually the best thing to do dynamics wise and you're right this would lift the back heel; it'd also push the whole model forward about an inch, which would put the lead foot down. However, trying to get nearly 2 kilos of model balanced on a supporting toe at a bizarre angle wasn't going to be a practical idea, so the back foot HAD to go flat (to conceal the reinforcing rods that go down into the base). alejandrinus
Awesome work, wynterdime the complete scene of the diorama is fantastic it has action in all the corners andyou can follow the history in different angles, are there any crushed gaunt in the posed foot of the Titan? it could be cool, although it seems that what you want to represent in that part of the diorama is more than the Gaunts are surrounding the Titan leg instead of beeing kicked/crushed by the titan, don't know ;), and those cadians are fantastic, and the colour range of VMA is fantastic via brush. Go on wynterdine this gonna be great. UltraRich
They look fantastic. The weathering looks subtle but enough to show that they have been around the block. winterdyne
Yeah, I've fiinished off the IG and about half the 'nids now. The face work is arguably relevant (I use the same methods on marines) but the later updates aren't. There are more WIP shots on my Facebook page, but I've not got round to putting blog posts together. Next week I should have the techpriest done, and I should have started serious work on the Titan itself and those can go on here. winterdyne
Following a brief break in service, this thread is back (Thanks, Kurgan!). Subtle Discord
I can't get "Tip Toe Through the Tulips" by Tiny Tim, out of my head every time I look at this diorama. I can can also hear the Guardsmen yelling, "Don't step over it, step on it!" A titan stepping on a Carnifex. Now that would be a wonderfully horrific sound! BrotherCaptainArkhan
Holy jeebus. I love it. When I first saw your thread title, I thought back to the section in Storm of Iron (SPOILERS) when Forrix goes hunting Warhound Titans (as you do), likening them to primordial beasts from his homeworld of Olympia. And then he takes one down in hand-to-hand. Now that'd be another awesome setpiece for someone to make... Seriously though, that's awesome. You must have some patience to have posed the Warhound like that. Awesome job!
