[Commission/Golden Demon] 'Hunting Bigger Game'

Recommended Posts

This week I shall mostly be hating painting gold. There's a lot of blends to do on all the gold on the legs... Glad I'm only using one Aquila plate.

I've just found a quick trick for the gold. It's nice.

VMC Bronze base. Heavy brown wash (here supplied by oils).

Highight with a mx of VMC Old Gold and VMA Gold (which is silver) at high spots. Really crude block highlight. Go about half way along the gradient.

Shade with a mix of VMC Black and VMC Bronze. Again, cover about half the gradient.

A long gradient should now be 3 blocks, about a third each of the shade, highlight and bronze.

Now make a glaze of the bronze and glaze it from the middle (bronze) section over the shade and highlight. That does for the gradient. Really need glaze medium for this; water doesn't carry the metal pigment well enough.

Edge highlight bottom ediges with the Old Gold / VMA Gold mix.

Edge highlight upper edges with pure VMA Gold.

Gold and the oil on the legs done. Still to do pigments and possibly some chipping, but I'm trying to keep the Titan more or less pristine. The chip on the striped leg IS an actual chip; no idea how that happened, so I'll have to do some weathering to blend that in.

Some tweaks and hopefully a better photo of the princeps. I've also done the first Moderatus, pics in a later update.

There Will Be Blood.

Well, alien insect goop, anywho. Thinking about it, a fair amount of good ol' human claret as well, especially on and around PFC Diz. I'm tempted to try and do projectile spatter onto the Titan's foot, that'd be quite cool. Time will tell.

As for explicit wounds, no - some of the nids have had legs / arms shot off, but I don't really see las impacts as being particularly rip-you-open damaging.

Considering your portfolio of work, you are probably already aware of this, but less is more when it comes to blood ...

That Titan is looking epic! (pardon the pun) And will most certainly make any customer happy ... Here is hoping you get it done in time for the Demons and grab yourself a trophy with it.

Best thread on BnC ever? Hmm, I think its definitely up there! This is seriously epic and hugely inspiring!!! I know its not finished but I really hope the interaction between characters bring this piece together, bodies interacting with terrain, dirt, blood and grime to tie everyone together, without going too overboard. At mo I would say its looking like an eavy metal game, all perfect pieces next to each other.

I dunno, diorama's looking like a pretty full category this year for GDUK. Comparing against previous winners, I have a lot of work to do to have a decent shot. MUCH more detail to add on the base, though the general theme is pretty good I reckon. It just needs more of those little elements that reward you for continuing to look at it - stuff like Matt Parkes' troll attack under the bridge, or the beautiful detailing (two themes in two nearly identical scenes) on the piece that took the sword at GDDE last year. I'm aiming high, but that's the best way to push yourself I think. :-)

Currently the plans are:

1) Finish the damn titan.

2) Weather the titan, general feel of steam engine weathering, so some oil / grime streaks but very little rust on moving/maintained parts.

3) More base detail. Lots more.

4) Get a plaque made.

5) Remember to enamel the side of the base again. Likely to happen the night before GD :-p

I'm cross posting this here, as this thread does get a bit of traffic, and some of you may not follow my Facebook page. If this is more appropriate in another section, mods please either move or copy at your discretion.

A bit of a Public Service Announcement - I know many of you may have seen this through forums (particularly DakkaDakka), but in case you haven't:

It's come to my attention that there's what appears to be a persistent, dedicated scammer at large, and at least one of WCM's clients have been affected.

Please be aware that Three Stage Studios / Daniel Mandelbaum / Matthew Bonder / Red Star One appear to be the same person and SHOULD NOT be traded with as there are a number of non-delivery complaints coupled with no refunds.

There is sufficient case for me to warn against ALL of the identities listed above, whether they eventually prove to be the same person or not.

The general MO appears to be that some (reasonable looking) conversion kits / parts are offered for sale, or commission painting services are offered at a knock-down rate. Some are delivered, but later orders are not filled, and the scammer retires from the community before resurfacing under another name. This time round the parts in question are a True Scale Terminator kit, with MKV PA style studs. You'll know it when you see it. There's also a Knight Titan kit, which consists of partially recast Lego bionicle pieces, watch for that too, not only is it illegal to recast Lego parts, it's a model that's associated with this particular scammer.

There are a great number of established folks offering services - not just us here at WCM; Golem Painting Studio, Precinct Omega, Blue Table Painting etc are all established services. Known folks may have queues, higher prices, but we've gotten established over a lot of time. Bottom line, please check out who you send money to before you send money.

Sorry if this isn't quite appropriate here but I don't like seeing folks get fleeced by the seedier elements of the commission / modelmaking business.

This week I've been plodding away on the inside of the titan.

Some cleanup to do, particularly around the dials and controls, and there's a few marks that will be weathered in here and there. But it's getting there. Hopefully I'll finish the internals midway through next week, then I'm back to painting gold trim on the carapace for a bit...

Great job so far winterdyne. It's a definite shoe-in for at least a finalist!

What have you painted the silver metal on the cockpit with? It could be that it's just because it's such a large area of metal, but the metal flakes look especially coarse/grainy. Is that just an effect of the photography?
