First company command squad

Recommended Posts

Decided to take a small break from edge highlighting my storm talon (lots of straight lines!!) and do something I've been saying I'll do for ages. Namely put together and build my command squad and paint up a freehand banner for them.

Now as I've never done it before I've decided to keep it simple, just a big U with a bit of scrollwork with my gaming motto in latin

"non viscera, non gloria" which is, no guts no glory. Now this motto has lost me far more games than it's won me but that's just how I roll, I'm a somewhat impulsive general!

This is how I started it, my idea being to build up the artwork to give it more depth, I'm quite happy with the progress, for a first attempt I think its not bad. Although I could use a few tips if anybody has any. Also it looks a little bit empty now so perhaps a few symbols in the corners or something?

This is as far as I've gotten, please any suggestions and criticism most welcome.

It looks like your off to a great start! I'm a veteran painter and freehand is one of my weekend points to date.

But I can offer some advice.

The banner as a whole lacks depth. Not just the freehand. My advice wod be to highlight and shade the banner how you normally would then apply the freehand in thin layers to build up a nice even coat.

The scroll work is to a good start but also lacks depth. The flowing parts of the scroll need to be shaded to represent the depth to them. Right now it looks like its in the shame amount of light as the main scroll.

The original advice will help you greatly with shading and hightlighting your designs since it allows you to match your lights and darks to those already on the banner and since your working with thin coats you'll be able to see the difference in shades as you apply your layers.

Hope this is helpful <_<

I treat everything as if it were really the object it represents. In this case, a piece of fabric with a symbol woven into it, I do the whole fabric first, highlights et al and then move on to the woven symbol. Same for everything really. You're off to a great start though, much better than my first four or five thousand attempts at freehand

Thanks to all you guys for the tips, really should have shaded and highlighted it first as doing it this way was a bit of a nightmare. It's ok for a first attempt I think and with a bit of tidying up it will look more than passable. The writing could use a lot of work though, it was HARD!It has inspired me to get my command squad done now. Heres what I got so far

Looking good! I love the freehand text, it looks more authentic than my own shoddy attempts. :D

I don't think your motto means what you think it means but then I'm no great shakes at Latin myself and I'm pretty sure everyone will get it.

Good stuff, keep it up!

So after feeling inspired by my banner and a drubbing against the eldar last night, I decided to finally start that command squad. Having done the banner it seemed only fair to start with the guy holding said banner.

My command squad is going to be all plasma guns so I wanted the banner bearer to be getting stuck in. I really like what I've come up with. It's simple but I think balanced, although the gun sticks out I think the banner evens the model out. Also, I tried to get the sense that he's just swung round to fire by the parchments and medal swinging out.

Think for my other marines I want to get a real individual unit thing going so I'm going to try and make each unique as possible but I'm not very experienced at converting so we'll see what I come up with! I think a couple with running legs and I might try some re-posisioning of legs if i'm feeling brave. I've started putting the apothecary together, he's going to be mostly all white to make him really stand out I'm waiting for the new gw white paints first before I give that a bash.

Here are some shots of how my banner bearer is bearing up. I've made a couple of choices regarding the use of white that I haven't in any of my other veterans. Namely the chest piece being white and the top of the back-pack. I think it looks really cool and I may go back over my old sternguard squad when I've finished my command squad.

This is the first time I've used the new gw white range, and I have to say I think they're great, so much easier and smoother than before!

Also I've tried out the glowing thing for my plasma gun for the first time, I did green as I thought too much blue would look a bit drab. I'm not sure if I like the result, I think it's ok but if anyone has any tips it would be greatly appreciated.

Still got a few more bits to do, I might add another purity seal on his left thigh and then I'll do the base. C and C most welcome.

So ... That is a before shot for Ancient Galatan ... Before he fails his it gets hot roll and loses that arm ... ;p

Nice clean job, I especially like the freehand on the banner.

I'm totally stunned by this awesome, amazing model. Usually I'm not a huge fan of the smurfs, but this one looks very fine. I also like the banner very much although I think the "o" in Gloria is a bit too big. It looks like a capital letter to me. Anyway, AWESOME freehand and really awesome banner at all.

Ha ha! Something like that. I'm pretty chuffed with him really. A couple of bits I wish I'd taken more time on but they can be tidied up.

@ Master Barachiel, thanks dude I really appreciate that. Comments like that really inspire me to keep doing more and push myself. I don't know many people who collect and game so It's really great to get some outside opinions.

Anyhow next I'm going to tackle my apothecary and I was thinking of all white, however I don't know what colour to paint the chest piece. Any thoughts?

A bit more done. Well what with the new tome to digest and all , not really a huge amount of time for painting. Also the downgrading of fnp is a bit of a sting for my project of the moment!!! Still I want them anyway and besides ap2 is gonna come in very handy against all those tda!

My apothecary is well on his way now and I'm really pleased with the white, it's some of the smoothest I've ever managed. Decided to go blue on the chest piece and I think it's worked out.

After reading the new rules I have decided to go wolfish for my allies and in typical move by me had to think of a way to make things difficult for myself, so I decided my codex wolves allies are going to be painted white. I'm thinking of calling them the Sons of Odin. Anyway the apothecary ended up being a bit of a bench-mark test to see if I could pull it off and I think I just might. I should be starting them after I finish my command squad.

Here's a sneaky peak of the new kid in the unit

After a week being ill and not being able to do much painting, I finished my apothecary. I'm really pleased with how he's turned out and he's made me decide that I'm definately going to paint my space wolf codex guys white. I haven't quite done the white highlights but I can do that with some of the other guys in the unit.

Anyway here he is:

And here are a couple of shots to show how the others are coming along. I've started painting the one guy and another is almost ready for priming.

I quite liked the idea that the second guy has the signum just to imply he's a specialist at shooting! I'm also toying with the idea of giving him a servo-skull, any thoughts on that?

Managed to grab some time last night and almost finished the next veteran. About halfway through the squad and starting to wish that I'd maybe prepared all the models in advance so it would be quicker work, however I'm a bit dis-organised so I always seem to do things one at a time. I have got the next veteran undercoated but the final marine I'm not sure how to pose.

Anyway here is what I've been working on:

With the backpack banner on this guy I was going to just do a plain blue or white one, but then I thought why not both!! I'm quite happy with what I came up with. Although the I representing the first company seems a bit off, can't quite put my finger on it. Any thoughts?

C and c most appreciated guys.
