6th Edition Allies

With the arrival of 6E in a couple of weeks, one of the traits from 2E is being brought back and potentially revamped.. that being 'Allies'.

In 2E, you simply picked from a list of codexes and it factored into your FOC alottment. This time, however, they supposedly get their own mini-FOC in conjunction with our own.

My question is, has anyone heard/seen what ally selection SWs will get, and/or given the option, what other army would you consider a brother-in-arms?

From how I understand there will be an allies chart showing how much each faction trusts any other and that determines what FOC choices and how many you can have access too. Thus I imagine Space Wolves will have a trusted relationship with other Space Marines and Imperial Guard, a suspicious trust of say Tau or Eldar, great distrust with Necron or Dark Eldar and total animosity towards Daemons or Chaos Space Marines.

How that will work out yet I'm not at all sure but it could lead to some interesting combinations and some very story driven missions. For instance a mission where your Space Wolves are holding out against a horde of Tyranids when from reserves you have a strike force of Eldar appear to lend a hand. At the very least I can see the ability to mix various armies in a players collection like Apocalypse but not quite as large scale, and that's cool.

I also hear there will now be a Fortifications FOC slot to allow any army to take bastions, landing pads and so forth, so within a single legal FOC you could construct your own cool scenario.

I actually think that most Marine - Marine will be suspicious allies purely the nature of how Prideful most Chapters are. SW + DA SHOULD be either Suspicious or Great Distrust.

only armies i can see SW happily working beside are Guard, SoB, Grey hunters ( maybe? )

With more Space Wolves than I can ever use (outside of Apocalypse), I won't be using any allies. Not much point in bringing in outsiders when I got so many perfectly capable Sons of Russ to do the job.

The same sentiment applies to my other three armies; I'd rather stick with what I've already got at my fingertips.

Valerian

Rags, that would be all I've dreamed of.

As long as we get a Stormraven, I'm happy. I've spent so long working on my Space Wolf Stormraven that it would be extremely painful not to be able to use for another edition. Plus it would be quite useful. Wolf guard attack squad of doom, combined with biker army escort.

OK want broken? Ally black templar, get emperors champion and a squad of initiates in a rhino. Now take the vow where the entire army gets preferred emeny, and now you can reroll misses in CC AND shooting...... broke as f....

i actually did some research to see what the vow actually has to say. It specially mentions 'all black templar units' and ' preferred enemy in close combat ' so no .. no other armies get the vow and no shooting preferred enemy.

Leaning toward Grey Knights myself. Being allowed to take a squad of 5 tda troops with free halberds and grenades for 5pts more expensive than a pack of 5 tda WG elites with cml and only power weapons and no grenades... just awesome.

And then I'd take a henchmen unit and paint them up as fenrisian kaerls and skjalds fresh from the bowels of The Fang, not to mention finally being allowed a chimera and some dreadnoughts that aren't elites.

I see a huge opportunity for combined armies, like Ultramar PDF, Chapter Serfs, Space Wolf Bondsman and so on and so forth. I suddenly want to convert up a few squads of Catachans as Bondsman, give em beards and wolf pelt cloaks... yea, that's definitely going to be my next project.

All in all, ill be glad that they bring allies back, but will be interesting to see how it works.

Think itd be awesome for certain scenarios too - especially if theyre bringing in stuff liek assasinate missions and terrain slots - drop podding in a load of grey hunters in order to save a besieged bastion containing an inquisitor and his SoB bodyguard sounds a treat :(

I'm really interested in combining IG with Wolves... is there a particular regiment that the Wolves have traditionally worked with in the fluff? Or do they just reinforce whoever happens to be at a particular area the Wolves have interest in?

In the First War for Armageddon SW allied with Armageddon PDF and Grey Knights. Also, IIRC during the 13th Black Crusade Logan Grimnar was selected as the supreme commander of all Imperials defending the Cadian Gate. But the status of 13th Black Crusade is not clear yet - according to the Codex:Eye of Terror and results of online campaign it ended with the Black Crusade being repelled (again) but of half of the Cadian sector going under Chaos control. Whereas current fluff and timeline states that the 13th Black Crusade is just beginning.

Also Fenris does not have nor need its own PDF, so painting plastic cadians in Shadow Grey with black/yellow armor would not be the best idea ;)

PDF means planetary defense forces, right? Fenris doesn't, but the Fang sure as hell does. Not to mention starship crews. At least, if you go by BotF or Prospero Burns fluff, which anyone using the term Vlka Fenryka does (which seems to be a lot lately).
