Does anyone else not like Erebus?

So yeah, I guess because I have a soft spot for the colourful world of 2nd ed, I remember when things were a little less fleshed out, and the Horus Heresy was indeeds Horus's Heresy. With Erebus being such a crucial part of things as far as I've read (havent gotten to First Heretic or Aurelian =( ) I almost look at Horus as a victim of circumstance firstly (which I have no real issue with) and of the kniving of others secondly (which to me seems to demean the big H). But dont get me wrong, the old story Needed to be fleshed out, and Im more or less happy with most of it. TBH, I never got to read the fluff from the 2nd ed chaos dex, how much did that depart with things? Was Erebus always a key player back then? Lorgar? I mostly got my sense of the 40k world from Codex Imperialis, and I am just curious as to when things began to take the current tone. Perhaps the 3rd ed index astartes? Im fairly sure Davin and the warrior lodge was around back then, was that when it was first introduced? Finally, I just gotta say....MAN I HATE EREBUS! Its well written, because he seems to be so much the guy I want bad things to happen to, but alas, the dramatic irony that creeps in to remind me always that I'll never get to see him bite the bullet. (Unless Im really missing something?)

OKAY, and does anyone have an idea of what the sign of the aquila looks like?

Brother Nihm has it correct, from my understanding

@karden00

Yeah i don't like Erebus too much, but to some extent i liek how he is the devil on Horus' shoulder, pushing his ego. I still think it was ultimately Horus and his ego that drove the heresy, aided of course by Chaos

Codex Imperialis is the foundation stone of 40k fluff as we know it, i still have it and its as good today as it ever was. I only wish some of the newer players of 40k who claim to be fluff experts would read it before gobbing off sometimes

Yeah, I hate Erebus too. I spent the week after I had finished the first two books screaming my hatred of Erebus. It legitimately made me angry. I kept wishing I could punch him in the face and kick him in the... knee. Oh man did I hate him. And I didn't even know he survived it all until I read the Dark Apostle book that mentioned him in the 40k universe. Oh man did that set me off. I went back into my hate mode. He needs to die.

Eh. Not sure how much death would stop Erebus. As much as we all hate him, I don't actually know whether or not it'd be possible to truly get rid of him... short of getting a sane Alpha + Psyker to completely eradicate his very existence.....

Could see him being brought back by the Chaos Gods if needed...

If he was portrayed with a lot less moustache twirling then he would be my favourite villain.

Think about it,

To ruin that much/involving so many billion souls..

That's kinda my take on it as well. A great character that comes off a bit too simplistic at times (although that's probably quite hard to avoid).

I actually really like the basic idea of Erebus, Kor Phaeron and Lorgar being the architects' of Horus' downfall. However, I also think it needs to clearly be Horus' choice to embrace Chaos (at least at some point). I'm okay with him being weakened and somewhat deceived to begin with but that shouldn't be all there is to it in the long run.

I guess my take is that Horus needs to willingly choose evil for the heresy to be meaningful (otherwise I guess you could say it's just one massive cosmic Rickroll).

I hate what he does, but how he does it is fantastic manipulation across multiple facets of the Imperial (at the time) Warmachine. He's a mother:cuss:ing genius I mean he's worthy of being an Alpha Legion commander the way he controls and knows everything.

ps. @Cryox I have never heard of the Codex Imperialis, but you say it's like the tome of fluff. What's in it etc.?

The guy is ok? A bit too much of the evil cackling whilst twirling his moustache and kicking a puppy at times, but on the whole, the dude has got it sorted. In many ways, Kor phaeron and Erebus are the true architects of the entire heresy, Lorgar listens to Erebus as his closest spiritual advisor, and that comes through in really wel in TFH. I particularly like th edit after the drop site massacre where Erebus and Argel Tal are walking through the wreckage, he exudes an almost smugness at his plans coming together, it's awesome.

It's the background book that came with the 2nd edition box of 40k, it's pretty good and established a lot of the fluff, which later versions then expanded. You can find it on eBay pretty cheap, it's a good read :thanks:

Erebus seems like a bit of a prick to me, but hes a prick with a plan and that I admire.

@A D-B: But will the powers above let you use it? That is the question.

Word is there might be/is a series in the future from A D-B called "Rise of the Warmaster".

now that is a series i would buy the living crap out of.

I heard about that, but didn't know if it was going to happen or not.

And I'm with you, brother. I'd buy the "living crap" out of it too.

If there's a baddie to dislikes then Abaddon fills that for me. He's like the Grimlock of the Heresy - 'Me Abaddon say SMASH!' He's a caricature meat head villain.

I can rebuild him. I have the technology.

*envisions Abby ripping out the Talon of Horus to the 6 Million Dollar Man "Nananananananaananananana"*

*cue up appropriately awesome 70's theme music*

*Coyote-1 jumps over the moon to land next to KITT. They get married, General Lee is the best man, Michael Knight the Bridesmaid*

*Fall Guy and the Kool-Aid man bust out of the wall saying "OH YEAH! ADB! SNAP IT TO A SLIM JIM! FEEL THE EXCITEMENT!"*

*Refreshments are served at Magnum and Higgins' beach house, Mid-East Peace summit breaks out, Tyranids go vegan*

I've been waiting a long time for that Black Legion book :( Even rumors of it from the wellspring evokes feelings of nerd rapture!!!

edit: Oh and yeah, if you dont like bad guys then Erebus prolly isnt your dude. He is one of the root enablers of the Heresy.
