Talthus, Concept Post - Legio XIX, Raven Guard

Alright, so first things first, I wanted to talk a little about what direction I'm going to be taking with the XIX legion, the Raven Guard. Like the illustrious Damned Artificer I'm going to be basing my guys firmly in the Crusade era, wearing almost exclusively Mk2 armor, with a bit of Mk3 and Mk4 thrown in for good measure. There won't be any feathers or bird skulls, at least not on the Terran guys. The time frame will be shortly after the Raven Guard are reunited with their Primarch.

http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/f/fd/Deliverance-lost-2_-_Primarch_Corax.jpg

That being said much of the army, and the initial guys I'll be working on for this month, will be Terran in origin. What I'm thinking is that there will be relatively few recruits yet from Deliverance/ Kiavahr, so it'll mainly be veterans from the earlier campaigns during the crusade. This allows me to incorporate more "Terran style" markings along with the common Raven Guard markings, as well as more of a "Legion" feel, if you catch my drift. There will be a mix of tactical designations from the "Red Light, Green Light" markings from Index Astartes: Raven Guard, and more normal Codex markings. Even though it hasn't been written yet. ^_^

I think this will server to cement the idea of a Legion in transition from the "old" way to the "new" way of Corax's style of warfare.

That all being said, I'm pretty sure there has never been a definitive name for the Legion pre-Corax, but I have this idea that the command markings seen on current Raven Guard officers (white armor sections) could be used as their pre-Corax colors, and a nod to the traditions of the "old" legion. Maybe they were called the "Imperial Eagles"? :D That is said in slight jest, but there could be some use there.

So for this month, I'll be ordering two FW MK2 sets, the Raven Guard Brass Etch and Decals, along with the Tigrus pattern bolters, as i think they are pretty nifty looking, as well as some other bits that are top secret.

Anyway, I hope you survived the wall of text, and that it served as a good guide to my thought process. Any thoughts or suggestions? Do you guys think the High Marshal Helbrecht model would fit as a commander or should I go for something else?

Wow awesome start brother Talthus of the XIX Legion!

I think if you extensively convert the crap out of him.

I have no parts to build Custodes or Sisters, so.... I guess I'll just be patient, and see if anyone is forced to drop out. Ah well.

Aw that sucks :D

Now its my turn :D

Mr.Malevolent, Concept Post- Legio III, The Emperor's Children

Well unlike my brothers Talthus and the damned artificer I'm going for a Pre-Heresy "actual" Heresy themed Emperors Children army. The basic idea is that I will have a large number of "normal" Legionnaires in Mk.3, 4 and 5 and then I'm going to slowly introduce the heretical Slaanesh worshipping side in the form of Noise Marines and Daemons (thank you for Allies) which hopefully if rumors are ringing true I can use with a nice new shiny Chaos Codex this Fall.

Our illustrious Primarch, Fulgrim the Phoenician

I also plan on making a few important characters for the army.

I'm looking at Fulgrim and my favorite Emperor's Children character, Lucius the Master Swordsman!

So I will have some pics for you guys of the first 5 man squad either later tonight or early tomorrow.

I just finished airbrushing the base coat of Liche Purple just to get a nice even base to work from.

C&C is always welcome!

Cheers.

Looking great sir!

I hope you go with these guys as Lucius' body guard. The Cohors Nasicae:

I'm also looking for this real cool picture of Fabius Bile's marines...his "experiments". It was in Collected Visions and it would be totally cool in your force.

Also, should I leave the tabard on Helbrecht? The commander is going to be a veteran of the Unification of Terra, would the tabard "fit"?

EDIT: Desperta Ferro is my roomate and i didnt check before i posted and it was under his name, therefore his blank post. sorry.

Uh... yes to the Cohors Nasicae!

And yes to the Fabius Bile altered Marines for sure.

Weren't they basically the first Noise Marines?

About the tabard, I don't know much about the Unification Era...sorry.

Desperta Ferro, Concept Post - Legio VIII, The Night Lords

I plan on making my Lords based around right before the Heresy, right on the cusp before everything really went down. Most of my army will consist of the new additions of MKIV and MKIII. I will still have few Terran marines in MKII and III and as the sons of Nostromo begin to fill the ranks with MKIV. I would really like to capture the animosity of their terror markings and everything that instills fear in the enemy with their looks, like things you definitely do not want to find in a dark alley.
Konrad Curze

http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/b/b4/Night_Haunter.jpg

Hopefully by the end of the month Talthus and I will have our parts and bitz to really get started on this. I will probably start off with either an assault squad or perhaps a boarding party, perhaps even a Crusade era squad designed around the terrifying slaughter of bringing the worlds populace into servitude of the Imperium. I plan on posting a test model for C&Cs sooner than that because I havent done anything really constructive in the 40k universe in a very long time.

I have no idea at the moment of which company to do, hopefully more of an update will be in the near future.

@ Mr.Malevolent: Yup, I do believe they were, it was Mr. Bile that started messing with the geneseed iirc. Heck, if you plan on using the Chaos 'dex eventually you could field him as an HQ and use his abominations with all their cool rules.

@Desperta Ferro Looking good, now get to reading more Horus Heresy books!

I'm digging through all my stuff to see what I can come up, but I'll probably have to buy some bits. I'm not gonna do something lame like buy Scibor figures.

Yeah I actually prefer when people kit bash Cutodians.

The only thing I would buy from Scibor would be the "Custodian" heads.

Vagabond has a few Custodes threads here in the W.I.P.

To be honest if I were to ever actually use the Grey Knight Codex it would be to play Custodes like he has done.

I'll maybe take up the slot for Sisters of Silence. I was going to my FLGS soon anyway, so I may get my hands on a box of Dark Eldar Wytches and some other stuff I need... Will confirm this soon enough :D

Even though it was a blatant ad for a bits store, I really like the look of the White Lion helms from that guy on BoLS.

I'd think Kabalite warriors would be a closer match for the armor to sorta match what I've seen of SoS illustrations.

Where's everyone getting the cool primarch pictures for their concept posts? and the index astartes pictures? Is it just mastery of google? B)

Still uming and ahing over the details of my Salamanders force, such as whereever when it gets bigger should I make it a drop pod force, should I use the tempus fugitives rules in bigger games/make the force so I can use them, and other details all you guys seem to have got pinned down. Alos managed to move stuff, so may get something done today ;)

Nice to see this thread coming together, I'm especially interested by Mr Malevolent and Talthus's ideas for their respective legions, especially the hazard at the unification era Raven guard livery and name.

Might it be an idea once everyone has done a concept post, might it be an idea to collect them as a separate post in the librariaum, or perhaps have links to them on the first page possibly?

Cheers for the suggestion, but the Wyches have the right arm and leg poses, as well as bare heads and cool torsos, so I'll be going for Wyches ;)

I'd definitely do links on the first page. Dunno about the Librarium, though. I'll try to have my concept post up soon. I'll see about some bits orders tomorrow to get this show on the road.

You're gonna have to bits order or trade for female torsos. You get 6 femmes and 4 males in each box of 10, unless you're gonna greenstuff the bewbs.

Hehe the basic model itself is a metal veteran from around 4th edition I think, the one with the power mace, I don't think he's on the GW website any more  His helmet is from the Ivanus Enkomi model with the skull part sculpted over, his plasma pistol is from Sicarius on the arm from the fw sm tank crew (the one originally holding the scope) the shoulder pad is from severin loth's bodyguard along with the strap loincloth thingie. The axe is the shaft and hand of the models original power mace with a chaos power axe from 2nd edition cut to fit the top. the minotaur skull is from the Ivanus Enkomi models crozius arcanum the backpack is just a fw mk II/III one. the purity seals are various fw ones and the imperial fists icon on his shoulder pad is from the IF brass etch... That's about it :P

Ok... so why does everything look like Plastic instead of Resin, Metal and Green Stuff?

A very VERY talented artist by the name of Aerion the Faithful did every Primarch. You can see his stuff HERE.

I believe he did get every primarch.

And yeah we can definitely put up links to everyones concept entry. I may wait till everyone puts up one (if thats what everyone wants to do).

Night Hunters Post 2 - WIP Alpha Legionnaire

Right, have spent a happy morning using brother alpharius as paint tester.

Some bits I like.

Others not so much. Notable the metalics,

Used some new "leadbelcher" and have come to hate it.

Anywho, interesting and informative test mini so now we wait for numerous purchases to arrive.

I really like him! So awesome!

Like you mentioned the only part thats "off kilter" is the metal, not your fault, more on GWs end for a crappy product....

Other then that I love the free hand Alpha symbol and the markings.

Your really making me want to make that Post-Heresy Alpha Legion army I've been brainstorming for years.

Must... resist.... must.... resist.....

Now as far as metallics go, I heard GW went wayward with them and a good alternative thats really close to the old Boltgun Metal is Pig Iron from Privateer Press' P3 paint line. They are actually cheaper AND give you more paint for your money. I'd also give Vallejo a try.
