Pall Ironbear
Even though the Storm Nugget isn't Codex legal for SW, I thought I'd at least get the model and see if I could do better than GW. The more I played about with different options, the more I realised I should just have bought an Airfix Apache kit. This thread could go a long time between updates as my hobby ADD is kicking in, lots going on with work. A few pics so far: The front end looks like the pilot had parked it in a mountain side, so using the gun servitor from a SR, it got lengthened. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/95cf6bf8.jpg I'm using plasticard and Milliput to build up the front cockpit, and make it flow with the original. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/4a8384bf.jpg The rest of the airframe just looked too small next to the oversized engines. So the tail got lengthened, which seem to be a pretty common mod to carry out. Although I may have got carried away with it. Pilot compensating for something maybe? http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/3dda797b.jpg The engines got slimmed down slightly by using Whirlwind launch tubes, after grafting the original engine mounts to them. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/7bb9f8cc.jpg And next to *cough, ahem* a Storm Raven for scale. You can just make out (bottom left of pic) the twin speeder AC mount I'm using to replace the original oversized AC mount http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/704abd4f.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/254764-sw-thunderhawk-and-storm-talon-conversion/ Share on other sites
Pall Ironbear
Made a little more progress on the Storm Nugget, and then I got talked into a visit to Warhammer World.... Managed to throw some paint on the cockpit. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/5bd8231c.jpg But the real reason not much progress has been made, it's bigger brother is fighting for some build time. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/39d0ab22.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/aa576843.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/3e12a69f.jpg The T/Hawk need a lot of work to get it up to a reasonable standard. Someone posted in the SW forum that GW had missed a trick by not making the Storm Nugget legal for the Wolf dex. It so easily could have been nicknamed Airwolf. So while I was laying down a guide coat to smooth the milliput, we done this for a bit of fun. But now that allies will be legal in 40k games, it just might become a Raven Guard flyer for my force. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/0b1c3da1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/254764-sw-thunderhawk-and-storm-talon-conversion/#findComment-3097104 Share on other sites
Brother-Chaplain Kage
Jan-Michael Vincent is too much of a douchebag to fly for the Wolves. Montuhotep
How much did you lengthen the tail boom by? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/254764-sw-thunderhawk-and-storm-talon-conversion/#findComment-3100098 Share on other sites
Pall Ironbear
The top is 6cms, bottom of the boom is 5.5cms. I made a plasticard rod framework first, like a Bell-47, then covered it with more plasticard. Cain Tiberius Kondrad
I had planned on a Talon conversion myself. But I'd never thought about the Raven turret on the front... That is inspired! Seem that turret is brilliant on anything except the Raven though, lol. Pall Ironbear
It was the easiest way I could think of to get a gunner's cockpit on the front of the bird, continuing the 40K Apache feel. Pall Ironbear
I've been on nightshifts, so only a small update. Some more work on the cockpit. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/935cdd00.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/f439063f.jpg I've tried the chin mounted rockets, still not to sure if they will stay. The other option is to mount Landspeeder rocket pods under the winglets. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/55453b96.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/e29b21f0.jpg Really should get myself a digital camera and setup a decent photobooth for the pics. Apologies for the poor smartphone quality. Pall Ironbear
Progress on all the flyers has slowed a little. Lacking inspiration a little for the Talon conversion, so this update is on the T/hawk. Minor issue where I hadn't cleaned the release agent properly which has made some paint lift off. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/132B17A0-D486-4F1E-BE23-5EC73E6C4F14-5328-0000058CDD201BAA.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb124/shilly39/40k%20Wolves/40k%20Flyers/BCE86F6E-A036-48F1-876D-7437129AA59C-5328-0000058CEEBB75FC.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/254764-sw-thunderhawk-and-storm-talon-conversion/#findComment-3153428 Share on other sites
jeremy1391
That is looking cool! are its wings going to be stubby? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/254764-sw-thunderhawk-and-storm-talon-conversion/#findComment-3154382 Share on other sites
Pall Ironbear
Sorry, been a while sorting my life out. The wings on the Talon are going to stay as stubbies. Not too sure about the chin mounted rocket launcher now though. Made some more progress on the T/hawk. Thefit on this particular kit has been pretty bad. Taken a fair bit of re-shaping pieces and filling with milli-put to get the fit reasonable Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/254764-sw-thunderhawk-and-storm-talon-conversion/#findComment-3278158 Share on other sites
