Greetings brothers!

I recently came into possession of a hefty haul of Grey Knights swag, and since I've been a long time fluff nerd and with the upcoming new edition I figured now would be a great time to dip my feet into the other side of my 40k love. However, what I got were a bunch of the old style metal minis. It's 10 terminators and 18 power armored Grey Knights, 3 with Psycannons, 3 with Incinerators. They're already painted but not even on bases, so I already asked over on the PCA how to go about getting them on bases. They came with three land raiders and three rhinos. One land raider is painted, one is base coated and the other isn't, and the rhinos aren't even off the sprue. So I figure that I've got a decent little army already if I can figure out what I need to buy over the coming months to have a working army!

After looking at the codex, it seems like I'm going to be limited in some respects because all the power armor ones have halberds, except for the three with swords. Same with the terminators, since four have swords, four have halberds, and two have halberds and psycannon arms.

So what should somebody with no experience, and no idea how to build an army list buy/do?

First off, welcome and congratulations! Those metal minis are some gorgeous ones. Also, they're all individually legal. <_< Have you picked up a 5th Ed GK Codex yet? It's probably ready for 6th, barring an FAQ update we expect to get. Also, 6th Ed drops on SAturday, so that's the first thing you want to buy. <3

Thanks! Yes! I picked up the new codex when it came out for the new fluff. The first Counter GK book was one of my first 40k books, and I loved Grey Knights ever since, but I prefer AD-B's vision over pretty much everything.

As far as 6th goes, payday is friday, so I'll be ordering it this weekend if the tiny comic shop in town with the even smaller 40k section doesn't get any in.

Actually, if you don't mind working with bitz ordering sites, thet right arms of all the models are a seperate piece from the main metal body. This allows you to do arm swaps for different plastic arms, shoulderpads, and weapons. Check this picture for a reference of what I mean:

The Terminators are similar, the join is at the shoulder so with patience and spare parts you can completely rearm them just fine :D

You could forgo the bits sites and still follow Inq. Nic's advice. Simply pick up a single PAGK box; it has way more right arms than you need. ;) You may run a bit tight on shoulder plates, but if you have a local club/group you're playing with, you could hit them up for spare shoulder pads (I know I have MANY in my kit) and the vanilla marines pads at least are fine if you stick some bits on em. Heck, even if you don't.

ADDENDUM (Redaction) Eek, I take it back. :(

Totally forgot they went "hands" instead of "arms" in the kits. One sec, I'll repost with the numbers. (Also you can SEE how much of a goober I am by examining the sprues on the GW site itself.) Stand by...

Okay, so...almost each weapon in the plastic GK kit (which, by the way, is a fantastic kit) has it's own set of arms. This is good and bad, haha. A two handed halberd has two hands molded on it but is accompanied by two handless-arms (left and right...the left arm has a mounted storm-bolter).

There are likewise 1-handed halberds that have two arms, as well as a smattering of empty hands (fists, open hands, or pointing fingers) to fill in the left arm at times. You could mix and match, maybe...some combination/permutation (behind my mind after work, I'm afraid) will allow you to replace the halberd arms with swords...but then you'd still have only halberds and falchions left over :(

Here's what I did with my metal power-armored GK: I painted them up as Purifiers. Halberds are free and Purifiers are bamfs.

Maybe that bit of advice is more helpful. Sorry if I confused. ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well after stripping the not so great paint job from the guys, and finding a few other surprises in the box with them I ended up with this little group

18 PAGK

3 NFS and 9 NFH

3 Psycannons and 3 Incinerators

10 GKT

4 NFS 6 NFH

8 Stormbolters, 2 Incinerators, 5 Psycannons

1 Brother-Captain Stern

1 Inquisitor with power sword and bolt pistol

1 Callidus assassin

2 sanctioned psykers

2 cybermastifs

Along with the 3 LR's with the sprue for the variants, and 3 rhinos

And then I bought a box of PAGK at my FLGS this week, and I'm waiting on 6th ed, Draigo, and Crowe from GW since my FLGS didn't have any special characters or books.

I've been reading a lot of lists, and reading all the thoughts and comments about 6th ed, and hopefully this weekend the BRB will come in I'll actually be able to crack it open and get some time with the new stuff, but for now I'm still a little lost

My question is what should I arm my PAGK and GKT with? I've got all those beautiful plastic bits now, so I can at least find something to specialize in for the PAGK. Should I be saving up for some more GKT or looking towards a Crowe/Purifier list? I haven't gotten a game under my belt yet, so I don't know exactly what I want to do, but I've already decided that I want to eventually hit having a whole Brotherhood, so any models work towards that goal.
