Guardian Angels WIP

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I joined in on the E Tenebrae Lux challenge for the Liber Astartes, and I will be putting together and painting some minis for my DIY Chapter The Guardian Angels.

Those who have been around for a while will probably remember the Guardian Angels from different settings around the B&C through many, many years. I haven't made any minis for them in many years though, so it's about time I got started again, and what better way to do so than for the E Tenebrae Lux challenge.

Here is my vow:

“I Chaptermaster Graymantle answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete 30 Terminators, 1 Caestus Assault Ram with a Firefury Missile Battery and Frag Assault Launchers, as well as 3 Land Speeder Tempests from Codex: Space Marines, Imperial Armour v10, and Imperial Armour v2, for a total value of 1830 points on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to The Guardian Angels and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year's end”.

I am probably changing my colour scheme to something like this:

(Not sure about if I will be doing camo, or even a new sceme. Have to make a test model first)

A Guardian Angels Officer:

A Guardian Angels Brother Astartes:

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/temp_material/Guardian-Angels-Visual-Index-Marine.jpg

Initially I will be making 30 Terminators for the Vow, but my actual goal is 60. So I will be adding to the Vow once the first 30 are done.

I havent made up my mind about the weapons configuration yet, but as you will see I have quite a few options available to me.

Initially I will be making 10 Tartaros pattern Terminators, and the rest will be regular Terminator armour.

Later I will also be making character Terminators by converting a couple of Scibor models.

In addition to this, I will also be putting together 3 Land Speeder Tempests and 1 Caestus Assault Ram.

The deadline is the 15th of August.

Anyhow, here is my proof of concept.

Terminators in boxes:

Unprimed Terminator parts:

A few Terminator parts I've already primed:

Terminators that I've already assembled:

All the Terminator parts in one big pile:

The flyers in their bags:

Land Speeder Tempests in parts:

And finally, the Caestus Assault Ram in parts:

Wish me luck!

May your zeal match your budget!
He, he! - It does. That's why I have the 40k budget i have. ;)

Same here! A huge vow indeed for such a short time! Good luck - the Liber Astartes certainly need this vow completed!
The honour of the Liber Astartes shall be defended!

Love the look of your marines. Can't wait to see some painted :tu:

Me too, very nice artwork.

Thanks guys!

I'm looking forward to seeing the new paint-scheme on an actual mini too.

The Terminators will be slightly different from the regular Marine pattern armour though. I will have to figure out how.

I will begin the clean-up phase on the models on Monday.

Good luck with this project. I hope you can pull it all off in time.

Your scheme is cool as ****! Love the grey urban camo with the black. I am going to go and read about your guardian angels now if I can find them on here.

Can I ask a quick question, How does the landspeeder tempest compare in size with a normal landspeeder? Is it bigger or roughly the same size?

Cheers and again Good Luck :tu:

Dude, and I don't use that word lightly but i'm going to use it again, Dude, you pull that colour scheme off and make it look even half as good as that on the models, well, MAAASIVE respect.

Very much looking forward to seeing this thread progress!

Now have at them!

Best of luck on this most ambitious project brother!
Thank you! - I shall endeavor not to fail.

WOW!!!! Awesome colour scheme mate!!! Its like a cool fusion of Imperial Guard and Astartes! Good luck!

Thank you!

I rather like the colour scheme myself too, but one of my usual gaming opponents hates it for some reason.

Thank you very much!

I will do my best to get the minis as close to the art as possible. The Terminators will be slightly different though.

If you want to read about the Guardian Angels they herald back to the time before the B&C's popular Liber Astartes DIY section. Back to the time when all DIYs had their own website. So their info can be found here: www.codexguardianangels.com

The site hasn't been updated in years though, because I've been too busy with the Nestir V Campaign and with RL, so some things are outdated and will be retconned, and I literarily have hundreds of pages of text that are yet to be presented online.

As for your question: The Land Speeder Tempest is the same size as normal Land Speeders. The difference is it's weapons and single pilot, enclosed cockpit.

That is a lot of terminators!

Really like the scheme you have for these guys, everything from the camo, to the barcode on their chest. A really cool look, so I look forward to seeing these get done.

Thanks Brother Syth! :)

Ok, so I had to refurbish my living room and ended up being delayed by it, but my paint station is now back up and better than ever, so I've finally gotten to work on the project again.

The model parts have all been taken out of their sprues:

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/etenebre-lux/Parts001.jpg

Then the parts have been carefully scrubbed with a soft toothbrush in soap water, and rinsed:

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/etenebre-lux/washing-parts.jpg

After washing they have been dried with soft paper and have again been sorted and laid out to dry properly:

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/etenebre-lux/washed-parts.jpg

Next up is trimming and cleaning them up with a scalpel and file. Then it's on to converting all the parts that are to be converted.

Also, though not a Terminator, here is my finished colour scheme test model:

Compared to the concept art:

I need to speed up to get done in time, but think it is doable.

Cheers!

Thanks again guys!

Using a lit magnification glass work lamp, I just finished shaving down and filing all the parts for 30 Terminators.

I've also removed almost all the skulls with a scalpel and file.

The Guardian Angels are supposed to not have a lot of skulls on their armour, using eagles, wings, gems etc. as decorations instead. - They still have skulls on their Crux Terminatii though.

Also drilled all barrels.

Usually I haven't bothered removing mould lines for regular playing pieces in the past, just for special stuff. This time however, I've painstakingly removed all mould lines. - It seems an awful lot of work for such little detail, and it seems that it takes more time than it's really worth.

So what do you guys think?

Do you always remove mould lines, just sometimes, or never?

Is it really worth the extra time and effort for regular playing pieces?

Well, it's not much of an update, but the parts are finally all cleaned up and base coated.

Next up: Painting! :)

Base coated Terminator parts:

Very nice!

I don't know if you recall me, but I was a fan of your guys way back when.

I like how he turned out (how'd you do the cape?) but I think the camo would be better inverted in some places. The black would look better closer in on the body, but the larger parts (shins for example) would be in camo instead of the thighs. Just a thought :P

the camo is pretty nice, his chest and arm outline is broken up so I cant actually make it out, that makes for proper camo!

Thanks! That is indeed how camo should work, but I've also heard the other opinion expressed: That the camo makes the shapes hard to read and that I should try and find a pattern that looks cool without breaking the shapes up. Go figure! :D

Off course I remember you NemFX! ;)

I keep an eye on what you do around here from time to time too.

The cape is the cape from the Chaos Lord kit, converted to remove all fur, then primed black, undercoated with midnight blue, and brushed up with enchanted and lightning blue if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the feedback! ;)

Well, a combination of extreme weather and work, work, work means I haven't been able to do as much as I would have liked on the project. It is clear to me that I will most certainly fail the challenge, and the Mega Battle I was preparing for has sadly been canceled for now. Naturally though, I will keep pushing forward anyway, and there is some progress.

I've cleaned up and sprayed all the vehicle parts, as well as having given them the first coat of metalic sheen.

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/etenebre-lux/vehicle-parts.jpg

Not that impressed with FWs quality control though.

Most of the models were ok, but tons of flash, as well as a few miscasts. Especially bad was one of the Land Speeders.

The right turbine bleeds upwards and outside the turbine housing:

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/etenebre-lux/turbines02.jpg

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/etenebre-lux/turbines.jpg

An Aquila was poorly cast and is somewhat blury looking:

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/etenebre-lux/blurry-eagle.jpg

All the Landspeeders had trouble on the rear, with lots of flash and uneeven casts. One LS had so many air bubles that the rear plate just fell away from the central body (the whole body is one big cast btw), though I was able to fix it with some glue and patience.

I think I will have to do some cleanup and possibly convertion work to make the rear sections look ok.

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/etenebre-lux/LS-Tempest-rare.jpg

Other than that, I got a Terminator ready with it's jungle base.

So far I've opted not to go for the camo pattern on Termies, as they allready have lots of details cluttering them, and I have no intention of converting them like the regular Power Armoured guys.

Not entirely happy with the drilled holes on the Storm Bolter on this one, but the occational misalignment happens on such small models and I'm out of training. Ah well!

Also, I'm a bit on the fence about the new black shoulder pads. The new scheme looks cool on art and in close-ups, but I also miss the old blue and orange shoulder pads that really gave the army a distinctive look and that made them more recognizable from a distance.

The new scheme seems more gritty and serious though. - I dunno!

All in all I'm fairly happy with the result:

(Sorry about the blurry shots! The iPhone has a serious focusing problem up close on tiny stuff)

And the work continues ever on! :)
