Kabal_of_Baal
I recently acquired an old, unopend Space Hulk set (yahoo!) and, with all those lovely terminators, have been inspired to revist the boys in red. Given that the bulk of the army was painted when I just started 40k, it's a bit rough. As I repaint old things and add new units, I'm going to go for a more weathered, beaten up look. As always, any criticism and tips would be appreciated, especially in the realm of photography. I've read a bunch, but can't seem to get great photos, or to have everything in focus. So, advice there would be awesome, if anybody can see what I'm missing, because I can't! First, the first few terminators! Given that the space hulk termies have "deck plate" bases, but I'm aiming for a dusty, desert scheme, I'm not sure what do about the bases... http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6525.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6511.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6535.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6496.jpg This is the first redone rhino. I still have to apply the weathering powder (blasted snail mail) to make it sufficiently dusty. http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6555.jpg I'm working on a Scibor-flavoured sanguinor now, and more termies. I'd love to hear people's honest opinions!
Cardanis
I'm so jelly of your Termis. Wish I had enough money to land myself a set. Regardless, your painting looks awesome. If you don't mind me asking, what'd you do on the knee of the one terminator to give it that damaged look? I'm starting to experiment with battle damage, and am having trouble with it, but that looks exactly like what I want to pull off. Also, are you painting over the old models, or stripping them down? Rafen_2
Awesome paint job there! With the bases just make them into rocks. That's the best thing I can think of at the moment.
Kabal_of_Baal
Thanks for the kudos! On the knee, I used something similar to the "dab paint with a piece of foam" method, but instead of stippling with black then silver, I sort of brushed it on, aiming to do it on areas that would naturally have been subject to scrapes. Speaking of the termies, I've reworked them a bit, like so... http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6599.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6616.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6606.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6600.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6603.jpg And here we have the finished rhino. I'm only about 80% satisfied with the dust effect of the weathering powder. It was a bit too faint when just brushed on, but a bit too heavy when applied with any moisture. In future, I think I'll experiment with dry dusting in conjunction with some stippling. If anyone has an powder experience, by all means let me know! http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6596.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6594.jpg
Rafen_2
Great job there brother! See, the bases look just like rocks and you could hardly tell what it was intended to be.
Kabal_of_Baal
@ Rafen_2: yeah, they worked fine. I wasn't completely happy with the natural look of them unpainted, though, so I changed things a bit, as you shall soon see... So my biggest project of the last week or so has been painting up a Sanguinor. I used Scibor's Archangel with some moderate conversions. http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6624-1.jpg I switched the sword out for a [insert specific name of weapon here] made of some high elf blades and the haft of a thunder hammer. Serendipitously, the cable from said hammer connected perfectly with corresponding protrusions on the back of his arm. Looks like it was planned... Also, not being a fan of the drooling clown demon head, I replaced it with one of the objective markers from Space Hulk. Now, the chalice was pretty big, and would'v'e looked silly on another marine. But it was ok here because.... http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6629.jpg The mini is large. larger than I thought it would be. without a base, he would stand at least a head taller than a marine http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6628.jpg and if I've used the (frankly ridiculous) base that come with the mini, I think he would've been twice the height of a dread, rather than just almost twice as tall But that's ok with me! I think of this guy as almost a reincarnation of Sanguinius, so if he has a larger stature than the regular grunts, it makes sense. I tried two new things on this mini: wet blending on the blades http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6622-1.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6625.jpg and nmm on the cloak http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6630-1.jpg I'm happy with both (but obviously still room to improve) If there's one thing I'm less than completely happy with its with how the gold filegree on the armour turned out. It's just so damn fine! Maybe I'll try to go over it again when I can find an even smaller brush. :D
Chaplain Admetus
Great work dude, they're looking awesome. Just keep them away from Necrons :D
Kabal_of_Baal
Thanks man! Necrons do tend to scratch the paint on red power armour, don't they? Wonder where I learned that... :P
Midnightmare
Thank you for doing your termies with the stripe on the helm!! My successor has a stripe on the heads of the normal marines, but I wasn't sure if it would translate to the terms, but now I know. It looks boss! Your Sanguinor is excellent, the axe/halberd especially. Big kudo's :whistling:

Kabal_of_Baal
Did you switch to start painting RT Flesh Eaters? I'm not quite sure what "RT" means. Enlighten me? Today, a captain and drop pods! The captain (Black Reach one) was a joy to paint, and reminded me why I like SM minis so much. http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6657.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6661.jpg http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6650.jpg Tried NMM again on the banner, and I'm happy with the result. http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/IMG_6658.jpg This was also the first fellow that I fed through photoshop, just for a bit of touching-up and background-adding. From now on, I think everything is going to have to have this treatment! The one thing that I'm unhappy with is actually more to do with photography. If you notice in the first picture, the mini is if focus, but the sword isn't. In other photos I took, I could get the sword clear, but the mini was blurry, because the sword protrudes from the mini. Now, in other pictures (both GW ones and non) the whole mini is in focus, whether its far away or not. If someone more photographically literate than can tell me how to do this (or direct me to some tutorial or something) I'd be very appreciative :o Next are some scratch built drop pods. They're made of foamcore, plasticard, and fine wire mesh. http://i610.photobucket.com/albums/tt188/atomic_potatoe/Blood%20angels/CIMG3512.jpg The big one on the right is the pod in which my DC dread will introduce himself and his blood talons to the enemy's tender bits, and the one on the right will be for some as yet undetermined infantry squad. These pods actually serve a dual purpose, and also serve another vanilla marine army of mine that is mounted entirely in pods. THAT ONE is a blast to play, or at least it was in 5th. Haven't tried in 6th, yet...

The easiest fix is probably to change the f-stop value (make it higher) which would increase your depth of field (the point at which things get blurry). You need to be comfortable using manual mode for this. You can also try manual focus instead of auto focus, that may help too
Darklighter
Or you could just take the photo from further away. That way it'll not try to auto-focus on such a small part.

Now to figure out how to make one of those schnazzy montages that bring a number of pictures together into one collage-like-thing....
