Taking Flakk

Recommended Posts

Flyers, (and allies aside, 'cuz that's the answer to *everything*) how do the GK deal with them?

I doubt TL S8 shots form Dreads are going to be enough.

There are two things in this edition that have so far been made to combat Flyers. Well, apart from other Flyers. :P

'Skyfire' and Flakk Missiles.

Now the FAQs are out, no GK unit has been FAQed into having 'Skyfire' (unless it's in an appendix in the BRB somewhere), and 'Flakk' missiles have been provided to anyone that can have a Missile Launcher. OF which we have none (well, a Dread arm option).

So Flyers, how will we deal with them?

Purchase Fortitifcations I suppose. ;)

Ally IG. Take a full Hydra squadron and an Infantry Platoon (because we lack horde infantry anyway). Might add a Aegis Line with quad gun. Laugh at any fliers on the opponents side of the table.

This just gives me an excuse to run a trio of Nemesis Dreadknights with Heavy Incinerators and Personal Teleporters. Heavy Incinerators glance even the heaviest flier on a 6 (taking a Hull Point) and don't require a To Hit roll, and with a mighty 5 Attacks on the charge, I'm willing to bet I'll roll at least one 6 to hit. For extra goodness, I might just give them Nemesis Greatswords so I can re-roll the ones that aren't 6's.

That's as long as we're excluding all allies in this discussion ;)

Can't assault Flyers with Dreadknights if the Flyer is Zooming, even if you have the Personal Teleporter. Also, blast and template weapons without the Skyfire rule can't hit Flyers. Also note that Flakk missiles are an upgrade you have to purchase, and no one is able to purchase it yet afaik.

As for dealing with flyers, besides Allies, Fortifications and Stormravens; the Dreadnought isn't completely bad. With 4 twin-linked shots, even at BS1 you get 1.2 hits on average. And any torrent of fire weapons, such as a Grey Knight Strike squad with a helping of psybolt ammunition and a dash of psycannons is bound to get some hits in. Most flyers are only AV10 or 11 so even the S5 stormbolters can do some damage.

Did not realise any of this, having children has ensured I cannot afford the rulebook yet.......... Hmmmmm

Ok, so, looks like I'll be saving myself 75 points on Personal Teleporters from now on. As to the original question posed, I can honestly say I don't know what I'm going to do which is a problem as one of my regular opponents runs a Valkyrie and a Vendetta in his Imperial Guard as a matter of course. It would definitely seem that without allies we're pretty vulnerable to fliers but on the plus side, maybe people will stop whining that we're overpowered now.......

I've got the obligatory Psyfleman Dreadnought (to deal with Nob Bikers and Deffkoptas but even that doesn't work now because of changes to toughness rules. Grrr) so he'll probably be my primary anti-aircraft platform even without the Skyfire rule. Other than that, I'll probably just use harsh language.

RedemptionNL pretty much nailed it. 2 Psyflemen dread should bring most flyers down pretty quickly, even with bad rolls. Those hull points will be going down fast! Skyfire will appear randomly in the game, also (through mysterious objective). You can buy terrain (like a 100pts Skyline defense w/quad gun)... If worse come to worse, 8 psycannon shots will also get a hull point of most flyers (don't forget to mastercraft ALL paladin psycannons, now that wounds allocations are out!). Oh, and of course our very own SR can help, even if it's a bit worse at it than the BA one (our missile are not as good...).

It wont be easy, and rightly so. If flyers where too easy to hit, nobody would take them and that would be a mijor game mechanic shucked in the thrasbin...

My overall feeling about 6th ed is that it'll be about difficult tactical choices on the table. 5th ed was really about list building doing 80% of the job. Now, every unit, every turn, can do more thing, has more tactical choices. For example, you can't assault a unit you can't see anymore. So, do you go around that corner and shoot, even if that mean being assaulted? Etc...

I consider Stormraven a good "interceptor" especially if equiped with Las Cannon/Assault Cannot and Typhon ML (2 S8 shots)

You can find an ally. There Hydra are overkilling in my opinion since they can fire on single target. Vendettas are nice interceptors.

Since you want to allywith Eldar I'd suggest 3xWar Walkers squadron with Scatter Lasers. If you shoot 24 S6 shots you will roll some 6 :)
