ICs - Combat vs Psychic and how to kit out our lords...

Hello folks...

To my mind this new edition brings up a couple of interesting questions...

1 - Do we run a monster combat IC, a cheap rune priest or really sacrifice points and take both... or even Njal?

2 - If we take the monster combat IC how do we kit the man out? I was using a frost axe, storm shield, terminator armour and saga of the bear... but with the new changes to our beloved axes how do we kit him out? Terminator/runic armour of course but weapons? Twin claws and belt of russ? Switch to Thunder hammer for the extra strength and a storm shield? Or... Frost axe, with a cc/power weapon on the side to get the extra attack and a belt of russ? OH and a wolf tooth necklace of course to get a nice 3+ to hit... brilliant for challenges and a saga of your choice...

Good luck pondering

Cheers

i've not given it loads of thought but if your gonna give your lord a stormshield would TDA really be worth it now? i'd go runic with a ss all the time unless theres some specific reason why TDA would be more usful.

My thinking is of course taking up 1 less space in a transport so you could throw in a wp or rp also with runic armour :)

Your Frost Blade is still a Frost Blade, even if it is represented as an axe. It's a unique weapon, and as such, is covered by the codex NOT by the rules for Power Axes.

Mr shortysl - have a quick look at the FAQ, our frost AXES are ap2 +2 stength and unwieldy whereas the blades are +1 strength and ap3. This matter confuses things :)

My apologies. There have been a number of threads regarding Frost Blades that were modelled as axes and I hadn't seen mention of there being a specific FAQ for Frost Axes so I assumed they still fell under the generic Frost Blade rules.

I would assume that they are still cheaper than Powerfists though? If your Lord has himself a Storm Shield it may still be worth keeping the Frost Axe for the ability to kill Terminators. Sure, unwieldy is a bit of a bugger but the 3+ Invulnerable save will help with that.

The problem is that they're the same cost... so the balance to look at is both ap2, both unweildy... one is strength 6 the other 8. One however can get hold of an extra attack and the other can't without buying another hammer... But to get the other attack you lose the shield so it comes down to...

Hammer and storm shield vs Axe, CC weapon/pistol and belt of russ.

Str 8, 3++, unweildy, x attacks vs Str 6, 4++, unweildy, x+1 attacks.

Well that's how i'm looking at it anyway

Same price as well?! I really should stop making assumptions......

Ok, my personal opinion is that I would go for the Hammer and Shield option with base number of Attacks. Gaining an additional attack is all well and good provided you survive long enough to use it. that, and as much as I get the character of axes with Space Wolves, the idea of your Lord smashing his opponent with a massive hammer just reeks of martial honour; of besting your foe face to face, without carrying a gun.

The price for the frost blades have changed brothers. Changed in the FAQ.

It states that for both Wolf Lords and Battle Leaders that Frost Blades and Frost Axes are now 10 pts and not 25pts, making them the same price as a power first

If you read the errata more closely it states: "Wolf Lord, Options, fifth bullet point. Change......."

If you go to the 5th bullet point under wolf lord its for when you've chosen terminator armor so if you opt to go with PA or RA you're still paying 25pts to have a frost blade/axe.

If you're taking a SS the FB doesn't get an extra attack anyways. In my opinion most things that are gunna kill you're lord in CC are faster then him anyways so might as well take the PF. This is actually how I justified PF of sgts and attached WG in the past but now that they can be challanged I may change their load out.
Btw does our Wolf Lord with WTN really hit stationary vehicles on 3+ instead of just landing automatic hits now :D ?

If Vehicles have a WS.. then yes B)

It still only works against an enemy who has a WS not one who is treated as having a WS which changes depending on how far it moved.
