Hello all, this is my first tactical squad and i thought id post it up here for some comments ;)

My chapter is going to be a successor to the Salamanders (hence the green and black) and please note im limited to the variety of paints at the moment as they came with the army bundle i brought.

so far me and a friend have come up with either Cinder Drakes or Ember Wyrms, but if anyone would like to suggest any, your more than welcome :P

Here is a group shot:

with both of thoes names, i would suggest using a little bit of red (perhaps some sots of yellow) on the legs to give the impression that they are marching through embers and such, causing the little bits to float up in the air. i think that would look awesome, and add a very unique.

as for the rest of it, that green is a bit too yellow, and it looks like youve missed a few of the eye ports

Nice work so far.

The models still look a little bit flat though because you havent added any highlights or shading, this is ofcourse something that will take practise and experience to apply properly. You don't 'need' all the colours of paint to get things done though. You can mix them to make your own unique colours! Though I wouldn't recommend this for larger parts of the model as you'd have to repeat the same colours later down the line to match them. But small bits will hardly be noticed being a little different.

For example you could make your own shade right now, just dip a basecoat/standard brush in the Chaos Black and put it on a tile/plate/something else that won't absorb the paint easily and can be washed. Then dip the brush into a cup of water, don't shake it, just dip... then apply to the paint on your tile/plate and repeat about 4-5 times untill you get a very very watery slightly black (dirty) pool of water. Clean your brush to be sure it doesn't hold too much paint/water and carefully paint some of this black water on for example the boltguns. The water should flow freely over the model of the gun and you'll notice it starts pooling in the edges etc. making these parts darker than others. Let it dry before you touch it again if you have to/want to.

If you added too much you can clean your brush, dry it on some paper towel and then dip it on the model to absorb some of the water.

Basically you just made and applied your own wash. But ofcourse you can also buy a pot for 3 euro that does exactly the same

You can do this with any colour. For example gold usually works well with brownish paints, but you can also experiment with different colours to get different effects.

I think the easiest way to improve any flat-painted mini is probably a careful wash of a dark ink, in order to shade the recesses. It gives a lot of depth very easily. I think that would be the fastest way to improve your first squad.

Keep it up. Practice makes perfect!

Thanks for the advice and praises :)

Il look into giving them a wash with black like has been recommended, i can understand by what you mean with the term "flat" and hopeully will post some pics up once washed :)

Also a side note im currently painting my librarian :)

Deathwing70 gave a good piece of advice :)

I would also suggest trying blending on the shoulder pads. It's not as difficult as it seems, just mix your green with white and yellow, add some water to the brush and carefully apply the mix on the edges, then stretch the paint towards the central part of the pad. The water is your friend as you can easily remove the excessive paint with another brush or tissue. I would also suggest lining the recesses on the armour. As of now, it looks to black and too monolithic, adding thin dark grey lines would visibly separate the armour parts.

I also second War Angel's advice on adding a few tiny orange spots to the greaves, to make them look like treading embers. Or simply make them loon like embers. If you want to invest more time into painting, I would also propose the following thing: try painting thin curves over the plain parts of the armour (like the Night Lords' lightning bolts), but paint them orange. This would make them look like fantasy style magma golems. I'm sure the invested time would pay back tenfold :)

Thanks all for your advice, i have found it very helpful :whistling:

I attempted a black wash on the models, but by the pics you may not see them as clearly as in person :( However you may see that the sergeant is much darker (specially the red on helmet and weapon)

Also the reason none have their eyes done yet is as i will be painting them yellow and have no yellow at the moment, but when i get some il paint all their eyes :eek

In addition i Have now painted my librarian and decided to post him up here too, so here they are:

I havnt got any oranges or yellows yet but when i do, il add the eyes and the touches to the sword ;)

Just to let ya all know up next is Mr. Multimelta dread

Aways thin your paints with water (try to get a milk-like consistency). It's better to have 2-4 layers of thin paint than 1 layer thicky plastered on.

Washes are your friend. Easy shadowing/layering effects (you can thin these with water as well, once again -2-3 thin layers may be better). Forget about highlights till later when you're more confident.

Pretty much all of us started out like you but turned out pretty well in the end. Keep at it. The more you paint the better you'll get.

Please note i know the flames are not much to look at, but for me they are good lmao, but hey as i go on hopefully they will improve.

What ya think

Quick fix to the triple post would

Have been to apologize for it by editing it instead of making a new post. But if you go back and edit out the extra sets of pictures it would cut down the time it takes for slow internets to load this thread.

Nice flames, that's a good looking dread. And you're Libby is an interesting model. Is that rouge trader error? As loken mentioned, the force weapon needs a little more.

Good work, keep it up

Thanks for the advice, il do that now :)

Also yes that librarian is the rogue trader era model, and i love the look of it :) adds history to my guys.

Also i have noted the rhino doors were on backwards and have since corrected them (was my first rhino and i knew what way they went on but still ended up doing it wrong :-o )

Thanks for the praise for the flames, hopefully they will improve more as i paint more :)

Just to let you know my next unit is my tactical squad number 2 :D
