Wolf Scouts in 6th edition

Yep. It sucks hard.

But I might give them a chance - 5 Wolf Scouts with a Meltagun and a WG with just a Combi-melta. They would arrive, shoot those two meltaguns, throw a krak grenade (which is kinda cool) and probably die. It might still work against mechanized armies.

yea, I can't see pumping a squad of scouts into a list that can't assault. My melta always seems to miss, so it means I need to charge and use grenades...now that just isn't an option... so it seems my scouts are back to the shelf. Sad days indeed.

Same here. Wolf Scouts have been my absolute favorite Space Wolves unit for over a decade now. I had two large units of 8 Marines each fully kitted for close combat, and they never let me down. I just don't think I can risk exposing them to the enemy firepower in his backfield with those 4+ saves (much better to get them to the "safety" of close combat).

I think I'll just have to rotate them out for a while and start using that new Forgeworld Dreadnought that I got painted up.

Out of all of the 6e rules changes, this is the only one that really has me bothered. Oh well.

Surely throwing 9 s6 krak nades at a tank and firing your melta gun will still be amazing for dropping tanks and even units?. I had my scouts tooled for CC too so I'm abit down about it but they're still son's of Russ so can take abit of fire. especially if it means the enemy is no longer shooting my advancing army.

It's disappointing alright.

They're not as good now but their role has changed. I don't see them hunting Land Raiders as most Raiders will want to rush into midfield with their deadly cargos now, unless they're going to act as a very pricey support platform which means the Scouts will be too far to deal damage with their Meltas. They'll still be handy against other support vehicles but can only tag one per turn now and not a couple like they could before.

They can be a very good Focus Fire unit used to snipe guys out of squads depending upon their positioning. You move them to within 12" of some carelessly placed fancy guy and unload all of the Plasma into him so that no amount of LO,S will save him.

If that doesn't pan out after a few games then those points will go toward more suits of Terminator Armour for guys to lead my Grey Hunters.

Only one model per unit can throw a grenade.

Good news are that Lone Wolves and Dreads are going to see some more action.

As much as Scouts took a hit, Wolfguard got a boost. I can maybe see Lonewolves coming to the fore, but Dreads not so much. I can't even be troubled to bring Bjorn out for a few months while I establish my local Necron and DE meta, and I used to take him to EVERYTHING.

But at least now we have potentially free FOC slot - and if the Dreads with missile launchers will get the new Skyfire upgrade then... Previously it was - Wolf Scouts - check, Wolf Guard - check, Lone Wolf or Dreadnought - which one should I take? (friday friday fun fun fun fun) .

Same, after I read Battle of the Fang I fell in love with his badassery. I had him stand against Dragio, Vulken, and swathes of thunder hammers only to kill them in return. He's taken 100's of hits. Now he's going to fall over like oragami. They could have at least given him 4 hull points instead of 3 or increase his invul save to 4++.

This may be a poor suggestion but what about using them as speed bumps instead of coming on from the back i.e. infiltrate them/scout (I don't know how the new rules work... just get them in the mid-field in cover) and then ambush anything with an AV value which comes near?
I think it was mentioned above, but I think switching plasma guns with melta and combi melta may be a better idea. Especially if you can flank into cover then blast one shot at 24 or two at 12 depending on how close. Also perhaps switching bolt pistols with bolters?

X-Bolters or sniper rifles

Plasma gun

2xPlasma pistol and bolt pistol (gunslinger 2 shots)

Wolfguard with 2 plasma pistols

Obliterate any unit of opportunity when arriving then dig in for fire support or chase after terminators with 6 plasma shots.

If assault terminators turn to deal with you they are moving backwards

Whoa, I missed that. We can have two shots with dual wield on pistols???

Yeah, rule called Gunslinger allows a model armed with two Pistol weapons to fire both (pg 52).
