Cathedral-Pattern Land Raider Crusader

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am a fairly novice modeller (and I have ZERO painting skill, heh) but I really love the hobby and have always loved customising models and doing conversion work! I have recently begun making my first major vehicle conversion (Dreadnoughts notwithstanding), the Land Raider Cathedral. While this is by no means an original idea (I've seen at least 2 or 3 different variations on this theme), as soon as I saw the first one I loved the thought of it so much I knew I had to make my own!

I didn't take any progress shot of the actual building of the LRC, so I present it here in the "alpha" stage--fieldable, but nowhere near finished. These were taken with my phone, so apologies for the average quality.

Obviously there are still a lot of gaps to fill and major details to be fleshed out, including;

  • Pitched Roof: My plan here is to cut out individual shingles or tiles out of card and glue them on, making a properly textured roof
  • Detailing the base of the tower: Not sure what will end up going here but it is definitely looking a little "naked" at this point
  • Detailing the top along each side: Same here
  • Adding weapons: I know I want to include both a Multi-melta and Storm Bolter on this thing but it's just a matter of where to put 'em... Someone at my wargaming club cleverly suggested placing a Devastator Marine wielding a Twin-Linked Assault Cannon inside the tower instead of a gun emplacement. I think this would look pretty bad-ass, and is probably the direction I am going to go in (The tower isn't glued down yet, just stuck with some tack).

Anyway, I will keep this thread updated with my progress--slow as it may be! I would love to hear any comments, critique or ideas!

My chapter is a (rather confusing) mix of Black Templars, vanilla Marines and Space Wolves. I have a massive lore regarding their origins that I need to actually put to paper some time! But nonetheless, the Iron Cross of the Black Templars features heavily in their iconography ;)

Haha, well thankfully the top of that tower is just big enough for a 40mm base to sit comfortably! I will upload some pics of my Chapter Master and a Termie Wolf Priest sitting up there in the morning, along with my WIP of the AC Gunner for inside the tower!

Have you ever considered maybe making this on a parger scale and putting it on a baneblade chassis?

I can't say it ever occurred to me to try something like this, perhaps depending on how this one turns out I could make that my next project!

Well I've done some preliminary work on the Long Fang gunner for the tower of the Cathedral--here are a couple of shots. Built him out of an old Heavy Bolter devastator, tell me what you think so far.

He looks pretty over-the-top for sure, but hey that's pretty much a requirement for inclusion in 40K, right? ;D

Just for good measure I figure I'd post my kit-bashed custom Wolf Priest and Rune Priest who will also be calling this Cathedral home!

Still pretty rough at the moment but I am pleased with how it's looking so far. Still needs some GS work. Loved the psychic hood tutorial over at FTW and wanted to try it out. I think it worked really well.

Anyway, I'll post more as it comes.

@Captain Mike; I considered it yes, but I honestly don't know where I would have put the pintle! I know it's a little ridiculous, but hey, it's not like he has to lug it around the battlefield, he's just sitting in a tower ;)

Is that a Black Templar Librarian...?

I have an idea, you can make your chapter the rejects of all the chapters ;)

Humanitarian Marines Malevolent, loyal Astral Claws, Codex-hating Ultramarines, Flesh Tearers that perfer long range gunfights, unsneaky Raven Guard...

I see potential here...

I see potential too. I actually got the idea from the Legio fluff - IE, that those Black Templars who find out they're psykers after they've been implanted and everything, are typically sent to the Legio instead of spilling blood unnecessarily.

You could probably make a Legio force, in fact, with the whole rejects of the chapters idea ^_^

Well now I'm not super happy with the idea of my chapter being a "chapter of rejects" -.- I did like the direction you were taking it, Thirst, but I'd rather not copy my fluff from the Legio, or anywhere. I have a pretty specific origin lore in mind for this Chapter, and I do intend to pen it at some stage.

Anyways, Black Templar iconography does not a Black Templar make... Seeing as I am mixing and matching between Wolfy bits and Templar bits, I incorporated both into my Chapter's symbolism so it won't look so weird if I have someone with a Wolf shoulderpad on his left and a Cross shoulderpad on his right. This is kinda my "final draft" for my Chapter's logo.
