Colors of the Unforgiven

Good Evening fellow gamers,

I would like to hear your opinions regarding the colors of my upcoming unforgiven project.

In an effort to get some non-DA painted (don't want to burn out on the green) I am thinking about putting some Consecrators in queue.

My idea is to have the center stripe on the helmet be a bit larger than the ones you see on the example in the codex. I imagine dividing the helmet into thirds, with the middle third being the red stripe. Veterancy will be indicated by the inversion of the red and black (veterans would get a black stripe on a red helmet.

What are your opinions?

I am considering the possibility of having the helmet's stripe colors being varied based on roles in a company

Tacticals = Red Stripe

Assault = White Stripe

Veterans = Red with Black Stripe

Devestators = Solid Red

Which sounds better to you?

I've only been using a variant helmet color for my Dark Angel veterans (Bone White) but with the successor chapters I might try something different.

Or, should I just stick to picking out the veterans with helmet colors, and leave the rank & file squads all the same?

I enjoy your feedback.

Very Respectfully,

--Unforgiven

HERESY!!!

Just kidding.. B)

I think this would make for an interesting project. Even though Consecrators have already an established pattern, your variant (especially at your skill level) would be a nice alternative.

Idea: since you want to do something so special, how about creating your own DIY Unforgiven Chapter? Write some background for them too, and use this very interesting color-coding you suggested above. You don't have to do an "official" successor - especially if you have such a great idea for markings. What'd you think?

With a chapter like the Consecrators, I think the most striking look would be to revist the Rogue Trader-era Rank and Specialist Markings.

Personally I'd favour stripes rather than a full helmet colour change - can you not just have different colour stripes i.e.:

Tacticals = Red Stripe

Assault = White Stripe

Veterans =Gold Stripe

Veterans =Gold Stripe + gold shoulderpad rims

Devastators = Yellow stripe, (or more subtle black stripe)

Sounds like a cool idea though :tu:.

Cheers

@Ajax: The Rogue Trader era artwork, would probably work really well. Having sergeants with the helmet markers and such would be really unique. I hadn't even thought about anything like that.

@Isiah: The ideas of variant stripe colors has occured to me, and I haven't ruled it out. The thing is I want to keep the helmet stripes in theme with the colors of the Unforgiven already on display in the successor chapters.

Thanks for your opinions.

Unforgiven, another thing you could consider would be do the red stripe on black helm per the Consecrators/original DA markings, and then either do a single thin "designator stripe" with your chosen marking color (bone, white, green, gold, etc) down the middle of the red OR do a thin "designator stripe" on either side of the main red stripe. The second would actually be more "old school" IMO (ala the sergeant markings in Rogue Trader). You could use "thorn" markings on the "designator stripe" for a sergeant, but I'll also vote that the rank designators from RT would be cool to include on Consecrators.

@Bryan - the "designator stripes" you describe would be representative of how the Royal Navy distinguished different branches of Officers between the 1860s and 1950s.

Executive Branch Officers just had the Gold stripes (2 for LT, 3 for Commander etc), but all other branches had what was called a "Distinction Cloth" banding either side of the gold.

Supply (Pursers) Branch had white distinction cloth

Surgeons - Red

Engineers - Purple

Electrical - Dark Green

etc etc

Its entirely possible that this was the inspiration for the old RT era markings. Anyway, I think that would be a very nice way of distinguishing rank or specialisation. :sweat:

Following the "Rule of Cool" and doing something that really interests you seems like a more worthwhile time, then doing something that doesn't excite you so much. Put your own flavour into it, in my opinion.
