Blood Angel Assault Marine Veteran Sergeant

Recommended Posts

I came across this mini when I was unpacking some of my stuff after my recent house move. I was inspired to start working on it again after a recent conversation with mikhail (sorry mike! :D). I actually got the mini from my brother last Christmas. All I'd done before packing it away was add a mk II jump pack and file down one of the plastic Blood Angel heads because I didn't like the sculpt of the metal one it came with. The more I looked at it though the more I kept thinking 'he can't have a jump pack as there's no harness for it'. Some of you may disagree with me on this but I prefer my Astartes to have harnesses for their jump packs. I know that the physics of the 40k universe are far from those of real life but to me it just makes more sense to securely fasten yourself to something before it propels you into the air, rather than just sticking said something to your back.

So armed with a couple of bits from my bits box I set about changing it from a mini I didn't like bits of into one I loved all of:

Apologies for the poor photo quality, I'm still trying to find the best place to take photos in my new place... hopefully you can make out though that I've only really begun blocking in the main colours so far before bringing the white up so I can decide how bright to make the yellow and red areas.

comments and crits are as always very welcome :)

cheers

James

@ mikhail: thanks mate ;) glad you like him. the recipe so far is;

Red: mechrite red base, baal red wash.

Yellow: iyanden darksun, gryphonne sepia wash, iyanden darksun layer.

White: astronomican grey, devlan mud wash, ulthuan grey layer, (this will be highlighted with white scar).

The red is probably gonna go to a 50/50 mechrite/blood red mix, then pure blood red, with highlights based on blazing orange. The yellow will probably be highlighted with golden yellow, but I'll let you know for sure of these when I've actually done them :).

@ deathknight2000: ha ha, thanks, that's a good idea but i don't trust my gs-fu enough to work with it on a painted mini... Still I'll keep it mind in future :).

Cheers

James

  • 2 weeks later...

After a hectic week I finally got the chance to sit down and do some painting last night so I've started to add the next layer to the red:

After seeing the red next to the yellow plates I think I need to enrich them a little more cause they look somewhat bleached of colour to me, so once the red's finished up I'm gonna add a few glazes of Golden Yellow and see how that looks.

cheers

Managed to cram in quite a lot of painting today so here's some more progress shots:

Finished up the red and yellow armour today. I'm particularly pleased with them. It's been a while since I painted a whole mini red this one was a joy with it's clean cut armour sections. The yellow was a bit touch and go for a while but multiple thinned layers of Golden Yellow and a final highlight of Sunburst Yellow came up quite well I think.

I also put the final highlight on the white feathers

I decided to repaint the gems purple, I think that'll work better with the overall colour scheme of the mini as well as allowing me to go with blue/green eye lenses and a blue/green lightning effect on the sword blade.

Now to decide how to highlight up the scrolls, skulls, black and gold .

@ painkiller: thanks mate, and thank you for the compliment :) I'm not sure I'd agree with you entirely, but I have definately gotten neater over the last couple of years or so.

@ Darth Potato: thanks Darth. I'm not sure I've actually seen this mini on the board before although that's probably just due to my lengthy abscences :). What I love most about this mini is how uncluttered it is, there's just enough detail to create areas of interest and allow the use of different colours but not so much that it's a riot of colours if you know what I mean?

cheers

Thanks for the comments guys, couple of update pics:

I'm pushing really hard to try and get this mini finished now. Not rushing him mind, there's still some stuff to highlight up but the end is in sight now... :whoops:

@ gogmagog: thanks brother. Glad to find a fellow harness fan :wallbash:.

@ DeathKnight2000: wow... thank you... I don't think anyone's ever been that complementary about my work before :)

@ Tarvik: thanks brother. The red was really simple to do (if a little old fashioned now) it was mechrite red, washed with baal red, layered up with blood red, highlighted with blazing orange and then glazed with baal red. It does take some time to build up the thinned layers of blood red but I think it's worth taking the time to get it smooth \:whoops:

cheers

James
