Valerian, what is the legality of putting that lone wolf on a 40mm base? Is it permissible outside of friendly games? What is the benefit?

Well, it'll take me a bit to explain and answer those questions.  Good of you to bring up the base size issue, however.

To answer the question of "what is the legality of putting that lone wolf on a 40mm base?" (he's actually a Wolf Guard, not that that makes a difference in the answer), I have to respond with - it depends.  It depends on which edition of the game you are referring to, to put the question in proper context.  I started collecting my Space Wolves at the end of the RT era, and had a decent amount gathered by the end of 2e.  I don't even recall what the rules on base sizes were back then, if there even were any rules explicitly stated.  In 3e, which is when my collecting for this, and my other armies, really started to pick up steam, the rule was essentially that you could mount them on whatever size base you preferred.  This is the era in which I started basing all of my characters (Sergeants, Squad Leaders, Pack Leaders, Independent Characters, etc.) on 40mm bases.  In 4e the rule was refined to "mount them however you like, but on bases no smaller than the ones they came with".  So, throughout 3e and 4e, my models were strictly in accordance with the core rules.

In 5e, the base size rule changed significantly to a much more specific "you must mount models on the base they came with".  Obviously, my characters in Power/Runic Armour were now in violation of that rule. but I wasn't about to go back and re-base all of those models.  However, for all of the 5e pickup games that I played at the LGS I simply explained how I had based my characters, and why, to each of my opponents, and it never was an issue; nobody cared, as it never had a significant impact on any games.  In 6e the rule is once again a little more flexible, although many players are still probably stuck in 5e mindset.  The new rule states, "the rules in this book assume that models are mounted on the base they are supplied with.  Sometimes a player may have models in his collection on unusually modelled bases (that's me!).  In these cases....you should always feel free to mount the model on a base of appropriate size if you wish, using models of a similar type as guidance."

The new rule is that I can feel free to re-base them if I wish (which I do not).  I can also choose, therefore, to leave them as they are and continue to play with them as I always have.  So, for friendly games, it should continue to not be an issue.  For tournament games, as always, one should double-check with tournament organizers (and perhaps refer them to page 3 of the new 6e rulebook).

As for your final question, "what is the benefit?"  I see three advantages: 1) basing character models in this way makes it much easier to distinguish your character models in units, for you and your opponent.  2) basing characters like this helps protect them in transport/storage, as their arms, weapons, cloaks and pelts do not hang over the edges of the base.  3) and most importantly, the biggest advantage is that it looks cool and the "rule of cool" always wins.

Best regards,

Valerian,

Is there a tactical reason you've not used jump packs with your dual wielding plasma pistols?

I know they become a bit of a points sink, but equally, they're super module and ignore cover when moving... So could jump in, shoot, jump out of line of site, or hammer of wrath charge, especially with Mark of the Wulfen (on one) and 3 attacks on the remainder - 2 base, 1 for extra close combat weapon (4 attacks on the charge).

Given my earlier error on theLone Wolf comment, I'm interested in if anyone has used the Wolf guard option kitted out like this, and whether its worth the 300+ points. With Logan in the army, they seem like an uber troop choice on paper.

Me and my other half have been playing games recently that involve the funnest units you can try out. So I am thinking using.

I think it is going to be epic! Considering she plays Blood Angels I am going to show her it is not just angels that rule the skies pirate.gif

Valerian,

The reason is simply that Phil Kelly made Jump Packs and Bikes inordinately expensive for Wolf Guard - so much so that it is almost never worth it.  They may be effective, but not so much so to justify the outrageous cost.

Luckily, you can still get decent Mobility alternatives to Jump Packs and Bikes by using Transports or Outflanking (via a Saga of the Hunter HQ choice), which is exactly how I would use Arnolth, my Gunslinger Wolf Guard.  He is assigned as Pack Leader for a Grey Hunter pack that is joined by my SoH Wolf Priest.
