Psyflemen + Skyshield Landing Pad

So, I was reading the rules for the Skyshield Landing Pad in the BRB and I started thinking about what GK units would benefit from it the most. Since its special rules help against ranged attacks, I was trying to think what ranged units would benefit the most.... and then it hit me, our (in)famous Psyflemen Dreadnoughts! A 4++ save against shooting on them would make them MUCH more durable (basically increasing their survivability by 50%).

The Skyshield looks large enough that you can put at least three Dreads on it without them interfering with eachother's LOS on enemy targets. Also, the extra height from the Skyshield should give the Dreads better LOS for shooting their weapons at the enemy. An added bonus, any enemy units attempting to assault the Dreads on the Skypad count as moving through difficult terrain. Finally, if you are really tightly pressed, you can transform the Skyshield into "Unfurled" mode and DS reinforcements from reserve onto the platform to defend the Dreads. The "Unfurled" mode makes it so that these DSing units will not scatter.

Thoughts?

Yep, GW didn't think it through, natch. A Skyshield would make a perfect platform for the much-maligned flakka-dreads.

Strangely, IIRC, the Skyshield give a 4+ invulnerable save, not a 4+ cover save, against shooting. Not sure how that affects protection or not, but I thought it was weird... Still, a very good investment for psyflemen. I'd consider putting a Techmarine "wedged" between 2 dreads to restore weapons and hull points as needed.

Ha, but then you leave that to chance. Many tables won't have a suitable ruin that both gives good LOS and 5+ save (remember, cover saves for obscured is 5+) to two dreads in every deployment zone!

True, it depends on your table a bit, and whether or not you're using the terrain placement rules. If you can place the ruins yourself, you can place one where it would give a good firing position. Also, vehicles obscured by ruins gain a 4+ save, see the example on page 75.

even Aegis lines should be able to give 25% cover to a dreadnought, though its uses are fewer.

If I can get a save for my dreads from my aegis and I have a techmarine nearby with a beamer in a GKSS squad for protection, I'll be pretty happy. Look out Sir and 2+ save should keep him alive. I like the aegis. Anything that can damage flyers is on my list. I can also bolster any terrain so i can ally with a Seer and some pathfinders and keep them going all game too.

On the other hand, cover saves can be negated completely this edition (there are a few abilities and psychic powers rolling around with the 'Ignore Cover' rule). Straight 4+ invul is pretty tanky, especially on AV12 walkers with 'Fortitude' backing them up. Skyshield is also great for bringing in Terminators btw.

Aegis lines are going to sell quite well I think. They're essentially extra terrain you can set up every game, and the cheap upgrade to an anti-flyer quad gun makes them even more flexible against the new meta (flyers are going to be quite popular now). Also, you can spread an Aegis way more than a Skyshield, and it stacks with 'Shrouding'.
