Space Wolf Allies

Okay let's see if I get yelled at....

I'm thinking about picking up some IG to add to my Space Wolf Army. My question is what IG models would look "fluffy" Running with my Wolf Packs. I mean if they don't look like Fenrisian Troops why have them. Can't quite decide between Mordian (very Navy), Steel Legion, or Vostroyan. Thoughts?

I plan on eventually adding a squad of Veterans representing Bondsman mounted in a Valkyrie... I mean... it's a Valkyrie, can't resist. I'm thinking of using Catachans as the base for the Bondsman and converting them with beards, wolf pelts, trophies and so on.
Looking around at my options I'm prolly gonna go with a Primaris Psyker acting as a Gothi leading a squad of Veterans built from two Catachan Command Squads equipped with flamers and shotguns and all loaded into a Valkyrie. Whole thing is only 312 points...

my wolves will be joined with 112th cadian armourd (the steel panthers)

1 mech platoon of guards ,1 sqd of 3 leman russ (stanard varriant) and a scout unit of 3sentinals if i use hq for them it will probly be mech cmd squad and my elite will be techpriest

although a valkarie might be fun as well

Allies,

:) Ill be going with Space Marines to complete, gather and acquire a larger choice of units for my Wolf. Ive play Imperial guard back in 3rd Edition and cant really see myself going over the large built of troops again. Might kick-in some Vostroyan but that would be for objective fluf conversion more then anything. Ive look at other codex and got the following impression (Please correct me if im wrong)...

Dark Angels

Will wait for the new codex to come in within the next few months. The 6th Edition book cover is to dramatic to not see it coming.

Grey Knights

Costy but good if you want Lord Kaldor Draigo with Paladins (termies with two wounds) for troops, gain access to a stormraven for fast attack and top an assassin on the table as elite. (275+ few 55 + 205 + 145 pts) That would put your allies almost equal in points with your wolf on a 2000pts fight (1000/1000).

Blood Angels

Hard to gather on the Legion momentum of special rules with only one HQ plus Troop choice. Mephiston for high cost... if not Captain Tycho in Death Company plus one troop of death company and then one elite dreadnought... Leave ya one Baal predator to who we do not have access as fast attack for its assault cannon and then a stormraven for heavy support. Again costy trick (250 to 175 + few 60 + 125 + 115 + 200 pts) almost 1000/1000 with your wolf on a 2000pts game.

Ultramarines

This is where i have found cheaper stuff to gather so far... A Kor'sarro khan with 5 bikes that outflank for HQ and Troops... then a lower costy solution to our Bjorn famous character as... wait... an Ironclad Dreadnought... sure he is WS4 BS4 but he still gather 13 for front and 13 for side armor, plus few cool weapon like the hunter killer missiles to be sent at the start of the game against your opponent flyer... seismic hammer with meltagun... i mean if compare in points with Bjorn its a great save (270 pts vs 135 pts). Total come to about (160(45) + few 90 + 135 pts) almost 600/1400 with your wolf on a 2000pts game.

I dint go Sister... Orks... or Dark Eldar yet... For fluf reason... tuff a Dark Eldar whishes with a Space wolf head is still bugging me when i go to sleep. I mean yes our Scouts got hit and the space marines scouts are not at the boots height to our space wolf scouts if taken as low cost allies troops... but... what if you would simply replace them with some Dark Eldar / Space Wolf conversion to get a unit that can do the same damage if not more. I mean can Lelith Hesperax not be 'THE' perfect solution to replace our scouts... How about Duke Sliscus... The thing that bug me would be to turn them into a conversion so they look like feral imperial troops. Almost... as if you would be fighting with human Space wolf troops on fenris like 'Battle of the Fang'... Can it be DONE ??? Is it not time for our wolf to see few chicks on the table going barbarian crazy ?...

for Eldar, you could always go something like Eldrad with warlocks in a wave serpent + Rangers upgraded to pathfinders. They are allies of convenience.. which as it turns out could be a good thing. Give Eldrad Telepathy Powers and hope that you get puppet master (which is likely with four powers) and because of his staff, he can use it twice per turn if he isn't in assault. He forces enemy psychers to do the whole 3d6 psychic tests too. He can redploy d3+1 units after your opponent has set up and best of all, his spear is 2+ wound and ignores armour saves.

Also, the Pathfinders are ap1 on wounds of 5+ and get +2 to cover saves. So just a tad better than our scouts in terms of sniping.

To me that kind of small force screams, manipulation which is very fluffy Eldar wise and can just say that SW and Eldar have a common enemy ( unless of course your playing a bran redmaw army )

Not a bad choice at all.

Though I know I'd bypass the Valkyrie for 2-3 basic Leman Russes or Exterminators

Depends, are we talking fluff allies or competitiveness? Fluff wise...

Imperial Guard are always an option. Logan Grimnar commanded the forces of the Imperium during the 13th Black Crusade, so Cadian's are obviously a good option. We also served in the First Armageddon War, so Steel Legionnaires are also possible (as are the Grey Knights... but maybe less so the Inquisition itself.) Those are the two obvious ones, though almost any regiment is possible given the length and breadth of the Space Wolves service.

Any Space Marine Chapter is also fine, broadly speaking. Not sure about Relictors or Flesh Tearers, but other than that it's all good.

Eldar are the only Xenos I can see us allying with, and even then only in an "Enemy of my Enemy" type arrangement - Chaos being the only one, really.

Tactically, however - I'd say our only real choice is Guard, bringing some AA firepower - either Vendetta's or Hydra's. Everything else we can do as well as any other army.

I'm looking at Guard and BA. Guard for AA and because I'll reverse my Wolves colour scheme and paint them yellow and blue-grey because yellow looks lovely if done right. The BA will stand in as Wulfen: Sternhammer and Co are easily swapped for a Chappy and some DC while the Raven gives me another AA option - its just a pity the Wulfen will never get a spin in it...

i'm currently trying to put together a 573 allies liest (since that how much my wolf guard unit+dedicated landraider costs that i'll exchange for them), currently I'm considering either multiple valkyries/vendettas or a combination of vendettas/valks + hydra battery.

fluffwise, do we know up to what level the imperial fleet and space wolves interact? since we've got our own private fleet, would it be possible we use those to transport allied imperial guard units aswell? or would the high lords of terra and the fleet dissallow it?

Im pretty sure you cant use named characters as allies

you can have them. The no named characters was just a rumour that went around before the release.

Well in that case i need to reread blood angels, IG and grey knights then. Might even consider sisters too

Highly unlikely as there is simply no need. Space Marine vessels are better crewed and generally faster than Imperial Navy vessels to allow Space Marines to rapidly deploy to each warzone and then redeploy to somewhere else. Commonly Space Marines don't stick around for very long after their initial surgical strike, leaving mop-up to the Guard who arrive days, weeks or even months later. Regiments are most commonly transported on a wide variety of Imperial Guard Troop Ships or retrofitted freighters, vessels capable of carrying several hundred thousand Guardsmen at once and sometimes this is only one Regiment, sometimes its half a dozen or more. In either case these ships are used for sheer cargo capacity far in excess of what a Strike Cruiser is likely able to transport.

Also since the Administratum orchestrates the deployment of Imperial Guard units this is a relatively slow process while the Space Marines zip around as fast as their ships can carry them from warzone to warzone. Over time its possible for a group of Space Wolves to fight alongside the same Regiment but it doesn't seem particularly likely, let alone the need to transport a group of IG aboard their own ships.

If you want to represent Guard allies then Bondsman are the obvious and logical choice, the mortal crew of the Space Wolves vessels do occasionally fight alongside their masters. Another way to do it is during a Crusade setting where the same forces of Guard, Navy and Astartes fight alongside each other for an extended period of time and thus the presence of the same Guard units alongside your Space Wolves would not be a surprise.

tbh. I'm looking at a small IG detatchment - 6 Hydras, 3 Vendettas, 3 Valkyries, 30 Vets and a Lord Commissar as I feel his solid sense of duty would appeal to the wolves.

then a coupla other small ish detatchments of many Sons of Dorn - Imp. Fists, Crimson Fists and Templars; Sword Brethren, Emp. Champ, Grimaldus, Lysander, TDA Brotherhood, Kantor and Sternguard Brethren.
