Chapter concept Feasibility

For about a week I've been playing with the idea of a chapter that deploys almost exclusively Terminators (even normal battle brothers), to the detriment of everything else (IE. next to no armored support except land raiders and dreadnoughts). Said chapter would also be rather secretive and deploy only if necessary and in a precision strike capacity.

Would this even be feasible given the complexity of terminator armor?

Also, what legion would work best as a parent chapter, I'm currently thinking Salamanders (its an Asian themed chapter) or Raven Guard (the doctrine and secrecy)

Difficult. The Dark Angels (Deathwing) and Grey Knights used to be the only ones to deploy terminators in very large numbers. Times seem to have changed, especially with the GK getting a power armor option with the Daemonhunters codex and the Deathwing being turned into Belial-wing. Its like there's a push against using large numbers of termies by GW itself.

So I could see it as being extremely unlikely, and would require a very good explanation.

Salamanders (craftsmanship) or Iron Hands (scions of Mars). Raven Gard would be kinda out there since they specialize in assault troops. Besides that, I thought the Salamanders were actually an African or Arabian- themed chapter?

If the chapter is especially understrength, the numbers game could work. I agree with the assessment of Iron Hands and Salamanders as possible parents that would allow the Chapter to either build and maintain their own suits or have the relations with Mars to get them there. I would also add Imperial Fists to the list.

This is very important though: War gear should NOT define your DIY Chapter. You're here to tell a story, not justify your army list.

Salamanders are an african themed chapter. White scars are mongolian themed, but that doesnt mean that a salamander successor chapter cant be an aztec themed chapter or that a white scars successor cant be a russian red army themed chapter. the most likely thing passed down to a new chapter would be specific fighting details, but even then if you can write a reason why youre salamanders despise the use of flamers, then thats all you need.

Speaking as someone whose chapter (the Ice Lords) used to be all about this.

Don't do it.

Seriously, it's not worth it. Unless you play Epic, what's the largest number of Terminators you'll ever get on the field at once? Maybe fifty? Less than a hundred, almost certainly. And under those circumstances, there's no reason it can't be your chapter's First Company.

Additionally, most Space Marine Chapters already deploy only if necessary (there's about five times as many threats as they can face) and in precision strikes (they don't have the numbers for anything else).

As a suggestion - if you're writing a DIY chapter's fluff, it's usually a better idea in the long run to write about their personality than about their stuff and how much ass they kick (how they kick ass is OK, if it's different from the usual). Inventories of people's stuff aren't neat, but people can be. Similar principle. ^_^

i agree with this. when i first wrote my chapter, i had some insane idea that they only ever deployed via drop pods, because i wanted to make an all drop pod army. it didnt write very good, but if you go at it a differnt direction, you can write about how the chapter really really venerates there dreadnaught suits.

Okay, time to get back in the swing of critiquing stuff. This should be good for a warm up.

Well, I would ask "why?" The eternal why.

How is it exactly that they have so many TDA suits? The Dark Angels have about a hundred suits, and that's treated as a pretty big deal, since they're First Founding with all the prestige, the connections, and priority for getting new equipment.

And beyond that, there is the question of, well why would they only deploy in TDA suits?

TDA are not what I would call subtle.

Parent Chapter provides the gene-seed and maybe some preferences in fighting style. Everything else you should come up with on your own. Every Chapter has its own character and its own proud history.

QUOTED for the truth man! What I like to read about is the soul and personality of a Chapter, not "this is how we kill bad guys" or "we have leet gear that no one else has lolz"

Usually I think it's better to define the Chapter's character, what the average brother is like, what they think is and what their perspective is. And then let that inform the other characteristics of the Chapter.
