The Sons of Tyr

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So I thought I'd finally stop being a lurker and contribute something to this forum. It's easily one of the most inspiring painting and modelling forums on the internet (IMHO) and whilst my work pales in comparison to some of the more skilled members, I thought I'd give it a shot anyway.

This is the log for my homegrown chapter of Space Marines, the Sons of Tyr. Recently emerging from a civil war that saw the destruction of a significant section of the Chapter, the Sons of Tyr are currently seconded in their entirety to the Ordo Xenos branch of the Inquisition. Whilst most of the Chapter has been mobilised by Inquisitorial decree to support the Antarax Rift Crusade in a zone of space dangerously close to the Ghoul Stars, a single Clan of the Chapter (equivalent to a battle company in size) is currently fighting in another backwater region of Segmentum Ultima on the world of Gilgamesh Prime, a swamp world recently invaded by an Ork Waaagh!. Searching to recover lost Enslaver technology for the Ordo Xenos before it can be discovered by the Orks, the Sons of Tyr are in their element as xenos fighters and masters of guerilla warfare as befits their Raven Guard heritage.

OK, that's the gist of the background of the Chapter so far. Whilst they are Raven Guard successors, I'm attempting to portray them as a Chapter still in upheaval - the chain of command has been seriously weakened by the civil war from which the Chapter recently emerged, and those Marines who survived the catastrophe look to their brothers and squad leaders for guidance first, their trust in the Chapter's leaders shaken by the rumours of one of the Chapter Lords having fallen to the worship of gods ancient and bloodthirsty, spilling the blood of his own brothers and thus sundering the Chapter in brutal civil war. I'm using the Space Wolves Codex to proxy the Sons of Tyr, largely because of the customisation it allows for characters, and the role the Wolf Guard and Grey Hunters play (and their customisability) fits well in my mind the status of the Sons of Tyr as a smaller force of Marines very experienced in warfare. No Thunderwolves/ Fen wolves or special characters though ;)

I've already got roughly 2000pts of painted Sons, however I've decided I'm not happy with the painting of the force, either in terms of quality or cohesion on the tabletop. To this end (a Space Wolves battleforce, a ton of greenstuff and my entire bits box later) I've decided to redo the force, following 3 simple criteria:

1. Everything must be done in semi-truescale (i.e. not the form used by Lamenter and Doghouse with Terminator legs - bit too expensive :P)

2. All models must be converted - no out-of-the-box models allowed

3. All models must be painted to character standard (so no assemby lines for me)

I think I'll manage this quite well as I've already got 2000pts of game-ready material, so I won't be rushed into finishing this. It'll be a good way to improvemy sculpting, converting and painting abilities (and they need them :P).

Enough talk - on with the piccies!

The very first truescaled Marine of the new force - battle-brother Teles Nubator of 2nd Tactical Squad, Bear Clan:

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1000791.jpg

(Worth mentioning that the Eldar kit around his belt is a hint of the Chapter's 'flexible' attitude towards the Codex Astartes and Imperial dogma in general - it's a trophy from a kill Nubator made on Auresh Secundus, and using the grenades he purloined from his prey against other xenotic targets please Nubator's sense of irony)

The Chapter's feared veterans, the Myrmidons, in their Terminator armour (note they aren't truescaled...but they do have enormous eviscerators :P) :

Finally, some shots of my Librarian, Damas Tirekes, and another marine from the old force, Morcar of the same squad as Asleif. Also, an objective counter I made some time ago and couldn't resist taking a few snaps of :(

So I've got a lot to work on over the next few weeks. I'm thinking to do two squads of Marines in the style of Nubator, with drum mags for their bolters courtesy of the Inquisition. As you can see my painting isn't horrendous but I have a lot to improve on. The truescaling work on Nubator looks very patchy (first time I've done it this way) but I think with some filing and some GS to even it out it'll improve. I'm going to try switching to plasticard for the truescaling as it's a bit easier to ensure all the marines are roughly the same height. I think he'll look a lot better when he's painted up - just need to find a better light source...

I will be adding to this log as often as I can do - I'm actually playing out the war on Gilgamesh (which has spread system-wide) with a friend at the moment, whose Orkoid log on Warseer inspired me to start my own here - hopefully that'll be a good incentive to keep updating ;)

Hope this was enjoyable to read - any comments, criticisms, death threats for using xenotic tech and questions welcome :)

Arkhan

P.S: My basing skills in the past have been horrendous. Particularly obvious on Tirekes' base. This will improve :P

Quick PIP update on Nubator...I really need a better light. The colours have gone really flat!*

Love the dead standard guy. For some inspiration on the semi-truscale look at veteran sergeants blog. He has some awesome poses and just uses a little bit of plasticard like you mention.

Other than that keep it up. I look forward to seeing this!

Thanks so much guys! It's a great incentive to keep working and trying to improve when you're getting positive feedback like this. I'm really excited to build a whole truescale (ish...) army - I received some good advice from Veteran Sergeant over on Warseer, Andrew, and his log was actually one of my biggest inspirations. You can probably see it most in Nubator's pose.

I'm definitely going to be switching to plasticard as soon as possible. I'm trying to work out how to cut the Marine legs with the minimum deformation to the two halves of the leg - been using scissors at the moment which I'm guessing is a pretty rookie mistake... :tu:

OK, update time. Teles Nubator is finished!

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1000803.jpg

I need to get a better backdrop, and find a light in my house that isn't so 'yellow'-y. Any feedback on the painting VERY welcome, I know there's a lot of room for improvement but that's why I'm keeping the log :)

Yodhrin - Nubator's bare head and the drum mag are from Anvil Industries. I really can't recommend them strongly enough, they're cheap, excellent quality (little to no flash) and deliver very quickly. The eviscerators/rhomphaia blades wielded by the Myrmidon Terminators are from Kromlech, if anyone's interested :)

On to the next Son in Nubator's squad - either going to be the bearer of the Totem Pole (Wolf Standard counts-as), the squad's marksman Vektyr Saraan, or the as-yet-unnamed sergeant of the squad. I'm wondering whether to name each model individually (as I did for my 2k force) by painting the name on the base - little worried my freehand isn't up to scratch, and as you can see in the first post, with my old marines I used strips of paper with the name printed on them. Wasn't the most professional way of doing it. Might just have try it out and see how it goes!

Cheers guys,

Arkhan

Cheers Yak! I've assembled the second Marine, Antassus Jumal. Actually, since this image was taken the odd tube at the bottom of the boltgun (was going to be a laser designator) has been switched for a Gears-of-War-style bayonet, and the head's been switched for an angrier looking one without the grill.

Be careful, I heard if you mention my name three times in a thread, I'm like Beetlejuice. A troublemaker and really difficult to get rid of. :D

That turned out really, really well. Rotating the left hand really helped. And your painting is excellent. Your model actually puts my original to shame. I'm excited to see where your project goes.

Jumal's painted! Couldn't resist placing him next to his squad-brother Nubator and a Guardsman of an as yet unfleshed-out project of mine. The campaign I'm fighting with a friend will be set on an ice world at some point hence the snowy bases.

With Jumal I wanted to give the impression of a Marine quite different to Nubator. Whilst Nubator's loadout is almost bland by comparison as he's only fought a few decades as a full Battle Brother, Jumal's fought significantly longer and through much bloodier campaigns, even prior to the Chapter civil war. Whilst he's got a trophy from an Eldar of the Alaitoc craftworld (a kill he's particularly proud of) I imagined him as having spent his formative years as a Marine fighting Orks. He knows that no matter how well positioned the Marine is, the Ork will always close the distance, and to this end he's got a modified Godwyn pattern combat attachment for his bolter, a standard service knife strapped to his belt and a non-standard close combat weapon (an axe he nicked off an Ork :P ) slung over his shoulder. No Ork is going to find him defenseless in close quarters. I also sculpted a fur pelt on his belt from one of the gargantuan bears on his homeworld of Madrigal.

edit: Of course only once the photos are up do you notice the random silly mistakes you've made in obvious places on the miniature...Oh well, the point is to learn and improve :D

These marines have so much character to them. The story behind each hero so far and the attention to small details is fantastic. They look like big-name action movie stars! Great stuff.

High praise indeed! ^_^ Thanks Sarge - I'm pretty pleased with Nubator. On the other hand I'm not so sure with Jumal, he was painted faster than Nubator and it shows in places. Jumal's face needs to be redone and there is some cleaning up that could be done which I'll do later. Next couple of Marines will be more dynamically posed, I think; might get around to doing the sharpshooter and a special weapon marine next. I haven't decided the best way to run counts-as Grey Hunters in 6th yet - I had a unit of GH in 5th with 2 flamers, PW and wolf standard who drop podded in and nuked light-armour units. From what I've heard gunlines will be making a return in 6th so it might be best to go down the plasma route.

Cheers Mercadius! That's the effect I'm trying to go for. I'm still not sure how to integrate each Marine's name onto the model - I don't trust my freehand to write it onto their base nor their armour. Inspiration welcome...

Will hopefully get another WIP marine up tonight ^_^

Ok, fixed Jumal by removing the blood on the bayonet and redoing the head. Better but I think Nubator is still my favourite. Chalk it up to experience :)

And here's a couple snaps of the next Marine in the squad - Untol Barak. Thought I'd give the lefty thing a try, and halfway through thought it would be too boring so went with the knife in the right hand instead. Looks a little Call-of-Duty-ish and not necessarily the most realistic pose but it gives him an extra dynamism, I think.

Time for a big update!

I've finished the first five Marines in what's going to be my army for 6th edition. I'm still working out a lot of the details of the background for this particular Clan Company of the Sons of Tyr but it's intended to be shaped quite dramatically by the leadership and approach to warfare taken by their Brother-Captain, Ludvos Arkhan.

So some shots of Squad Vengeance so far, led by the veteran Damien Kormak. Squad Vengeance is a freshly formed unit in Arkhan's Clan Company, made up of the survivors of a disastrous mission on the swamp world of Gilgamesh Prime in which a Sons of Tyr strikeforce was nearly wiped out in a clash with feral and offworlder Orks. Post-Gilgamesh, under the leadership of veteran Kormak, the squad has demonstrated considerable aptitude in engagements with Orkoid xenotics, particularly in outflanking manoeuvres where they are able to employ the tracking and shadowing skills gained from the forest wars on Gilgamesh.

And with an ammo dump:

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1000825.jpg

(I made a bit of an error with Damien. He's almost a head taller than the rest of my truescale Marines. In the background he'll have to be one of those Marines who are so big they're nearly too big for power armour...)

Individual shot of Untol Barak, who could be seen earlier in the thread unpainted:

And the last member of the squad, who didn't get a WIP shot unfortunately...Haeras Molon:

Hope you enjoyed looking - any and all comments, as always, very welcome! :)

Cheers mate! Hoping to finish off this squad pretty soon, working on their drop pod at the moment. Looking at ways to make a counts-as Wolf Standard for the squad at the moment...it's either going to be a trophy pole with the squad's kills or a totem pole with one of the Clan Company's guardian spirits (don't tell the Ecclesiarchy).

Off to the workbench...

Hey man, I love all the conversions here, and I really like this method of true scaling. I think some of my favorite pieces are the objectives. Those are just great bro.

Also, did you get the drum mag from anvil industries? Been thinking about getting some of those myself.

Let's see some scouts!

Cheers guys - the drum mags, bare heads, respirator heads and soon-to-be-used scopes are all from Anvil. I can't recommend them highly enough. There's a thread extolling their virtues in the PCA questions forum if you're in any doubt. The guy running the show seems keen to produce new material at an industrial rate so they're definitely one to keep an eye on.

Long time no post :) I think I've shot myself in the foot a bit with regards to this blog by taking bloody terrible pictures - I've still not found a good place to take pics and need to get this sorted. I'm nearly finished with my first squad (Vengeance) and only have one more model to go, the counts-as Wulfen, which I'm quite excited to finish.

In case anyone wonders, the servo-skulls in Squad Vengeance are there to count as the squad's Wolf Standard. I don't like the idea of a squad of Raven Guard successors being thrown into engagement after engagement on the Eastern Fringe messing around with flags and banners, and I always found the concept of a flag giving bonuses such as it does a little cheesy, so I decided that a fairly apt way to represent the re-roll 1's rule would be to have a pair of dedicated scanner servo-skulls attached to Squad Vengeance to assist the marines in target acquisition and battlefield observation. As a Marine normally has to carry the Wolf Standard, I've modelled the Marine who would be carrying the Standard as the squad's sergeant (but he obviously counts as a regular Marine for all intents and purposes) with one of the two servo-skulls on his backpack. The other one's free to roam around and is based separately, but is purely an aesthetic addition and would be removed during gaming if it became an LOS blocker or during an assault.

Terrible pictures notwithstanding, I'm open to any thoughts/criticisms anyone may have ;)

Very nice looking marines. Paintjobs and poses are really good. My only slight nitpick is Solmund with the knife. I know with those arms, you can close the open hand a bit to make it look like he is holding onto the knife a bit better.

But that is pretty minor, great work and looking forward to your next installment.
