The Sons of Tyr

Recommended Posts

Yeah, the sticking out thumb is a bit of a problem area with that figure. I got around it by clipping off the thumb, and then gluing it to side face of the hand which closes the thumb somewhat. However, the "best" way is to just use the closed fist from the assault Marines (plenty of chainswords lying around usually) for left hands that need to be gripping things.

But otherwise great work. They all have a ton of personality to them, and I really like that paint scheme. The halved shoulders are a nice touch.

Been meaning to update this thread for ages! No pics yet but I've got a lot of stuff done. Painting has been very slow as I've wanted to take my time over things; whenever I look over old pics I'm always astonished (guess you're your own worst critic after all). Re-reading the comments on this thread has been a huge re-inspiration, this forum really does have one of the best communities on the web I've experienced.

What I've been up to:

-Second squad of tactical marines (counts-as GH) with Stalker bolters, a plasma gun, Myrmidon (MotW), Sergeant w/sensorium and servo-skull (counts as GH w/Wolf Standard) - all basecoated grey

-Fully painted Journeyman (rune priest) with force stave

-Finished drop pod, fully painted

-Dreadnought on base w/dead Red Corsair (still painting)

-Land Speeder Typhoon, basecoated grey

-A ton of terrain! I'm working up to a massive photo update soon and want to include as much terrain as possible. I'm working on building a gaming board with a friend at the moment, and I've reworked all of my bases to match our plan for the new board.

I'm also contemplating where the army's going to go next. I've got the following expansions planned:

-Brother-Captain Arkhan (Wolf Lord) in TDA. Using the Lugft Huron FW model as the base for this, going to be *very* interesting trying to semi-truescale it...

-Painting the assault terminators on p.1

-Two veteran Devastator (Long Fang) squads

-A flyer! Space Wolves can't take flyers apart from the Storm Eagle from FW. Unfortunately my new gaming group seems to be really lame about FW things and might not let me use a Storm Eagle, so I'm a bit torn as to what to do. I don't really want to run allies from BA, although I could work it well into the background (Myrmidons = Death Company). Might have to wait for new flyer options ¬_¬

Will be taking pics soon, but until then, I've fleshed out the Sons of Tyr background in a version I'm very happy with. If you're interested feel free to rip it apart here! :)

Thanks for reading - looking forward to getting more pics online asap... :)

OK, there's not a whole lot of new stuff here, except for the Tyrian Hounds (Fen. Wolves), but I wanted to try and show the minis in a better light - literally, as I finally sorted out a better photography method.

Without further adieu -

Seven Stone Bear, who took the name Damas Tirekes when he was inducted into the Chapter, the Shaman-Librarian of the Seventh Brotherhood. Shown with a friend...

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/SSBwolf.jpg

Squad Vengeance, whose preferred method of assault is deep strike, following the edicts of the Primarch Corax, and rip the throat out of the enemy HQ in a barrage of bolter fire and blessed promethium. Actually so far they've lived up to this MO - they recently deep striked into the heart of a Guard army in a 1000pts game, and in a flurry of good dice rolls obliterated a Command HQ, a Chimera, and a Troops squad. They tend to take heavy casualties but as long as the kill ratios are favourable the Emperor's will is done

Sergeant Morcar and Barak - Morcar is a by-the-book sergeant in the Sons of Tyr, excelling as a tactical-level commander and chosen as Squad Vengeance's sergeant for his adaptability and innovative tactical direction under fire. Barak is considered by most of Vengeance's members to be the ideal candidate for sergeant after Morcar - he is the coolest of the squad's marines in combat and acts as demi-squad leader should the unit need to be split up to pursue multiple objectives.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/MorcarBarak.jpg

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/MorcarBarakBack.jpg

Jumal and Nubator - tend to fight as a dyas, both excelling in close support range, providing covering fire for Solmund and Tassilo to manoevre into position to unleash promethium on the enemy.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/JumalNubator.jpg

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/JumalNubatorBack.jpg

Hakan and Solmund - Hakan is the squad's close combat specialist and has proven himself against foes xenotic and traitorous many times over, as suggested by the kill marks etched into his shoulder guards. Solmund, one of Vengeance's two flamer marines, is equally as comfortable with bolt pistol and combat knife as with flamer, living vicariously from the screams of those burned by promethium and the death throes of those pierced by his blade.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/HakanSolmund.jpg

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/HakanSolmundBack.jpg

Ahanu and Tassilo - Ahanu is the most superstitious of the marines in Squad Vengeance, never entering battle without the blessing of the war spirits and the scrimshawed bones of his enemies adorning his weaponry; Tassilo, like Solmund, revels in Vengeance's preferred tactic of deep strike assault and lives for the chance to purge the enemies of the Emperor with holy fire and blade.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/AhanuTassilo.jpg

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/AhanuTassiloBack.jpg

Mauriac, the squad's sharpshooter and recipient of Marksman Honors, as shown by the golden shell casing on his shoulderpad.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/Mauriac.jpg

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/MauriacBack.jpg

The Myrmidons n'Kasara and Chu'umal. Following the rite of initiation into the ranks of the Myrmidon Lodge, the two marines depicted here surrendered their old identities and adopted the names of two of the war-spirits of Madrigal. In Madrigalan culture n'Kasara and Chu'umal were spirits of vengeance who, in the ghost world, stalked their dead foes as they had in life, tirelessly scouring the ranks of the dead for their enemies and pursuing their hatred of the cowardly and craven even past the grave.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/nKasaraChuumal.jpg

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/nKasaraChuumalBack.jpg

Squad Persecutor. This squad is often deployed simultaneously with Vengeance as the support unit. Persecutor's marines were outstanding Scouts before they earned their power armour, and still use their skill as huntsmen in outflanking and ambushing enemy reserves before they can access the main battlefield. Persecutor is known for its ability to enter the battle at the perfect moment, often when Vengeance's drop pod assault has cast the enemy into disarray, enabling Persecutor to join the battlefield and target remaining enemy points of resistance with deadly accurate Stalker bolter fire and plasma weaponry.

Sergeant Taresh and Skorak. Taresh, Persecutor's current leader, is the oldest and by far the wisest of the Seventh Brotherhood's sergeants, often consulted by his peers and a key leader in the Brotherhood. Skorak is, after Taresh, the oldest of Persecutor's marines, and has earned a reputation for being a deadly fighter not by dint of ferocity or technical skill, but through a combination of sheer animal cunning and persistent strong fortune. Skorak bears the runes of the Shamans on his mask, for it is believed that the war-spirits of Madrigal have plans yet for the old marine, and the Shamans will ensure that he receives their protection until their will is done.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/TareshSkorak.jpg

Kohan and Malak, by contrast, are the youngest and freshest members of Persecutor. Straight out of the Tenth Brotherhood and new in their power armour, they are valued by Taresh for the innovation and valour young warriors display in battle, and follow his and Skorak's lead without fail, ensuring they earn their place in Persecutor as huntsmen and snipers par excellence.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/KohanMalak.jpg

Nikomis and Ehinu. Nikomis lost his left foot to a mine in the scouring of Taldos, when assaulting an Iron Warriors dugout; he was unlucky enough to be hit by Basilisk fire, but lucky enough to survive the blast, and so crippled, to kill four of the enemy with bolter and combat knife, dispatching the fifth with the plating from a Chimera when his gun emptied and his blade shattered. Ehinu is the squad's best sharpshooter and is entrusted with auspex duties, ensuring the squad's advance is unhindered by enemy skirmishers.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/NikomisEhinu.jpg

Pallaton, Sakima and Tevik. Pallaton, like Ehinu, is an outstanding marksman and jostles for the award of Marksman's Honor with his battle-brother, although both are considered well deserving by their brothers. Sakima, the squad's close combat specialist, is the first into the fray and the most ruthless of Persecutor's members, uncompromising and sometimes bullheaded in his approach to warfare. Tevik, like Skorak, is one of the older marines of Persecutor and bears the honors he has won with pride on his armour; where other marines mark kills of note upon their armour, Tevik bears one golden gem upon his helmet for every five enemy armour units he has destroyed. Three such gems adorn his helmet now, and by the Emperor's grace, Tevik will add to his collection soon...

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/PallatonSakimaTevik.jpg

Finally, a contingent of the Tyrian Hounds employed by the Seventh Brotherhood as skirmisher units. Named after the Chapter's greatest hero, the Hounds of Tyr are fearsome canines genetically engineered to serve as shock troops in the assaults of the Sons of Tyr. Their use in certain tactical situations is unquestionable, although they are rarely used except in assaults where they can be employed to drive weaker enemy ground units into range of the big guns of the Sons of Tyr heavy support units.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/sidewolves.jpg

A quick snapshot of one such heavy support unit in-progress - the Vindicator Stone Bear.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/StoneBear.jpg

And an objective marker I'm working on...

Thanks for reading! Please, leave comments and feel free to tear apart my work ;)

All of these models are bloody brilliant, I love the individuality of each model, even the humblest tactical marine and you've inspired me to put some extra work into my own next batch grunts, the paint scheme and style matches the models perfectly and yea, keep up the great work, will be keeping an eye on this for certain.

Many thanks Krishar! That's some high praise indeed - I very much like your own Imperial Fists (they were my first army in 40k, back in 3rd ed when hardly anybody played them). I've a question for you about the weathering you've done which I'll pop over in your log, which I found inspirational  Thanks again!

Now for a true WiP shot of the Living Dreadnought and former Housemaster of the Seventh Brotherhood, Old One Mimir. I'm working out some background for him at the moment so for now, here's just a few pics of tonight's work:

Well, at the moment I have quite a big conversion planned for one of the Housemasters (Chapter Masters), who will be following the Grimnar rules. I'm also looking at doing a PA Brother-Captain following Wolf Lord rules. At the moment I'm working on whatever takes my fancy, and whilst I'm waiting for bits to arrive for some sniper Scouts and the Housemaster, bashed together another Marine for my 3rd squad of Marines (Grey Hunters). So far I have Squad Vengeance (the drop podding, promethium burning, rip-the-enemy's-heart-out-and-eat-it squad) and Squad Prosecutor (the squad which outflanks with a Chaplain [Wolf Priest]) and this squad will be my midfield unit, claiming objectives in the home area and acting as a mobile reserve. Need a name..thinking of going with Squad Aegis at the moment. Defensor and Tyrant are also options...hmm, I like 'Tyrant'...

Anyway, here's Rokke, one of the battle-brothers of this squad:

Tried to get across the idea that the heretic's head on the backpack has been crudely strapped onto the backpack...with nails through the eyes > Will come across better in painting.

Ok some new stuff. Been a bit eclectic with the modelling, just going with what I feel like, as previously mentioned :D

Got two of my first semi-truescaled Scouts, new Marine in Squad Tyrant, and a sneak peek of my Brotherhood Champion [counts-as Wolf Priest] Alaric Dastan here. *I know the GS work is rough, I need to go back and smooth it over in a number of places/add further detail*

New Marine:

EDIT: OF COURSE now I notice that the bolter barrel is, ever so slightly, not quite straight...:@ Will be fixed when I'm not bone tired.

and WiP Dastan:

Let's see if this garners some feedback... ;)

In response to criticisms elsewhere I'm seriously trying to up the quality of my sculpting. Slow process, especially when real life gets in the way, and my hobby time is consumed by an Imperial Guard force I randomly decided to start collecting, but I'll get there. I've also started to use plasticard - hopefully this is going to make a BIG difference to the quality of the truescaling. I think my Marines are coming in at around 32mm these days - easily a head over a normal Marine. Not that bigger is always better necessarily, but it tends to make them 'pop' better on the tabletop (IMHO) and that's what matters to me. Anyway, all the following are WiP (apart from the painted stuff, I guess) and I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments on them!

To begin with, a ruined Aquila I happened to pick up for cheap - painted this in about 5min and I quite like it.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1000996_zps2bba278e.jpg

Next, Marines from Squad Tyrant and their ride - this is the whole squad as they'll be joined by Brother-Apothecary Garraman Valtyr, painted. Valtyr is a Wolf Guard with combi-plas in game terms. They've proven pretty useful recently as a cheap objective grabber, and for some reason a small squad in a Razorback (even one sans upgrades) tends to draw more fire than a fully kitted out footslogging squad. Not complaining - in a recent game against Eldar, this gave another squad (Squad Prosecutor) a reprieve from enemy fire long enough to rip the head off an Eldar Wraithlord in hand to hand combat. You shouldn't charge a Wraithlord? Sez who?

The very first Son of Tyr (truescaled) I ever painted - I wanted to show the chainblades with which Squad Vengeance have recently been issued, the better to eviscerate the Chapter's enemies in close quarters. Sorry for the dark pic.

Some objective markers I've been working on - a wounded member of the Madrigalan VIIth and a holy relic he was entrusted to defend;

Gah, damn image limit.

OK, from here on out looking for more criticism/comments. Recently rebased, here's Damien Kormak, Veteran Sergeant of Brother-Captain Arkhan's command squad, generally tasked with leading Squad Prosecutor in battle (and recently contributing to aforementioned decapitation of a Wraithlord, with help from an angry Myrmidon).

The finished version of Brother-Chaplain Alaric Dastan, Arkhan's second-in-command in the Seventh Brotherhood - claim to fame so far in game terms is wiping out a mob of 25-odd Shoota Boyz on his own, Saga of the Warrior Born ftw:

And now the two big guys. Brother-Captain Ludvos Arkhan, master of the Seventh Brotherhood. He wears his artificer armour, carries a storm shield and a heavy chainsword crafted by the artificer Haestes Volund, in game terms counting as a frost blade. Like other Captains his rank is marked by facial tattoos (to be painted), twin braids of hair and a beard. Don't know if I mentioned this elsewhere but, in keeping with Madrigalan tribal culture, the warriors of the Sons of Tyr shave their heads, their war-chiefs (Brother-Captains) denoting their status by growing double-braids and facial hair. Sergeants are allowed a single braid of hair to denote their command status.

Also, on the topic of Arkhan - could I get some feedback as to whether to go with the standard Astartes power pack or the power pack with the eagle heads? I'm leaning towards the standard version - it is more in keeping with the motif of the Sons of Tyr, as excessive ornamentation like that is more for other Chapters...

Lord Alric Vanatyr, Chapter Master of the Sons of Tyr, Overking of Madrigal. He follows the rules for Logan Grimnar. Had to convert the base model's flamer (?) to a storm bolter - still not 100% happy with it, it's definitely WiP. Otherwise I like the model's pose and the way the head fits with the model - it's a great base model and I didn't feel the need to convert it much to have something that will stand out on the tabletop when it's painted.

I particularly like the wrist mounted storm bolter. Very nice work there. Is he going to get any little bits of fur or are you going for a 'cleaner' look?

Thanks very much! I'm vacillating. Arkhan (the PA Captain w/ frost blade and storm shield) had a fur loincloth but it made him look much shorter, and I wanted to give him a savage yet minimalistic look. Alric Vanatyr (Grimnar counts as) has considerably more bling on the base model - I'm worried adding fur will make him stand out too much from what's otherwise a pretty minimalist army. I'm open to suggestions/inspirations on this one.

Your faces are fantastic. Actually brilliant.

Not sure how much of that is the lighting, but thanks, dude :) Always nice to receive high praise like that!

I much prefer the standard pack for your captain. I have always hated those eagles for some reason, even for very ornament heavy armies. Especially with your, however, I would stick to a standard pack :D

Ya, I agree. Never liked the eagles either.

Thanks for the comments :) Keen to get more feedback, if possible!

Hmm, well, if you're going for minimalist, I'd say keep the ornamentation as it is. I honestly can't think of something that could be added without going against that appeal.

Hmm, I think your bolt shell is more immediately recognisable as such, though. Where'd you get it, if you don't mind me asking?

And yes they're still very much grey. Must be the awful pictures making them look otherwise! Need to up my game WRT photography, it seems :/

If you still want to add fur without your Alric looking too overdone, just greenstuff over the loincloth. I personally think thats a sick loincloth, but could you also cut it off then greenstuff. Otherwise I think your models look great, the poses, the subtle conversions are all great.

Two questions though, where did you get all the barrel drum mags, and the heads?
