Valerian
For those who might be interested, I took some time to go through and update my old Guide to Army Building to incorporate important points that need to be considered for 6e. I'm sure that there is more refinement to be made, but at least it is ready for public consumption. Just follow the linky: Valerian's Army Building Guide - Newly updated for 6th Edition. Feedback and comments are always welcome, and I hope that it proves to be useful for my pack-mates here in The Fang. Aren't they always well written ;) Thanks to you, as well, Brother forte. It's as if he lives for writing, painting and many other things Space Wolf. I guess I do live for all things Space Wolf, except for the painting part; I can't paint worth a damn, so I keep a terrific painter on retainer, instead. Just because I don't have the time, patience, or ability myself, doesn't mean I don't appreciate putting a fine looking Space Wolves army on the table-top. However, what I lack in artistry, I try to make up for in other areas, with my contributions to my brothers here in The Fang. Please let me know if anyone has any other comments, or questions, on the article. Just like everyone else, I'm still trying to fully grok the new rules, and I might have missed something worth delving into further. Wolf Guard Nostromo
Really interesting stuff - A much valued perspective as always Valerian. I found your thoughts in section III about assault forces interesting - I have been trying to use Space wolves more aggressively in recent years as I believe they are very (too?) easy to use in a base of fire/counter-attack role. The change to transport rules and wound allocation in combat (as well as duels) has, I think changed quite alot about how easy it is to accurately manipulate combats in the way you used too (and you very well describe as 'assault force note 2') - while a canny opponent would always make this difficult, the changes such as the massive disadvantages to charging multiple units (double the overwatch, no bonus attacks) have made this much tougher. There is also a chance you lose a specific model on the way in (e.g. your powerfist wolfguard) through overwatch which will reduce your combat potential alot and also potentially swing such analysis heavily. Its a game of chance, and always has been, but i think some of these new 're-balances' will be difficult to predict as accurately. I guess what I'm saying is that I agree with your summary but feel that, generally, charging has become more challenging (no pun intended) and thus 'combat management' may have become more of a lottery - time will tell I guess. As I always drone on about, +1 to grey Hunters as the ultimate consolidation force. None better in cost effect. As I always drone on about, +1 to grey Hunters as the ultimate consolidation force. None better in cost effect. Nos Nos, Thank you for the feedback. I think I get what you are saying, which is basically that perhaps a player shouldn't "hold back" when designing their assault forces; with the advent of 6e perhaps the calculus of tailoring for those 6-7 MEQ kills on the charge will be too hard to determine. I would respond that my initial impression is that you are probably correct. However, that being said, I would still advise folks to be mindful of "overkill". In an Apocalypse game all bets are off, but in a typical game of 40k, you really don't need to cram Ragnar, Arjac, a Wolf Priest, a couple of Fenrisian Wolves, and 9 more Wolf Guard with Power Weapons (Swords, Mauls, Axes, and Spears) into a Land Raider Crusader as your assault force. Brother, you never cease to amaze me! You truly are a skald and keeper of knowledge and wisdom. Have an ale on me, brother! Brother JonnyWolf Thanks much, JonnyWolf!
