spartan249
Got two games to report on. First is my rather disasterous fight against a run of the mill tau army, and second is a close victory vs a mechanized Blood Angels army. Game 1: Ghost Knights vs Tau Dudes 1.5k Ghost Knights HQ Librarian: Shrouding, Summoning, TH - 175 pts Troops Strike Squad: 10 Knights, 2 Psycannons, Psybolts, Dhammer - 250 pts Strike Squad: 10 Knights, 2 Psycannons, Psybolts, Dhammer - 250 pts Strike Squad: 10 Knights, 2 Psycannons, Psybolts, Dhammer - 250 pts Elites Vindicare: 145 pts Heavy Support Dread: 2x TLAC, Psybolts - 135 pts Dread: 2x TLAC, Psybolts - 135 pts Dreadknight: HI - 160 pts 1.5k Tau Strike Cadre (Note: I may be wrong on some specifics... haven't played tau for ages) HQ Shas'o Commander: Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Multi-Tracker, 2 Shield Drones Command Squad: 2 Shas'vre w/ Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Shield Generator Troops Fire Warrior Squad: 12 fish, Bonding Knife Fire Warrior Squad: 12 fish, Bonding Knife Kroot Squad: 12 Kroot, Shaper Elites Stealth Suit Squad: 6 Suits, 2 Fusion Blasters, Bonding Knife Heavy Support Skyray Hammerhead Sniper Drone Squad Fast Attack Pathfinders Mission: That 2 objective mission, whatever that was. Deployment: The diagonal no mans land one. I had my Librarian + Strike Squad on the board holding my objective, my Vindicare on my extreme right flank, and my two dreads on the extreme left flank. My 2 Strike Squads and Dreadknight were in deep strike reserves. He deploys his kroot close to my vindicare and his suits close to my dreads, and the rest of his army on his objective in a big building. He rolls up that City Fighter thing that gives his stuff improved cover saves... annoying. I set up first, but he stole the initiative. I had used Princeps of Deceit to move my vindicare as far forward as possible, then scouted him further in to try to shoot his hammerhead turn 1. Turned out that this move killed him. Turn 1 His kroot move in and engage my Vindicare, barely getting the kill and consolidating towards my objective. His turn of shooting from most of his army hits my Librarian's squad and kills 3 Knights. The Stealth Suits unsuccessfully engage my dreads, and my dreads laugh at them. The Librarian squad fails their morale check and runs straight off the board. My turn, the dreads move in, shoot up the stealth suits and kill 3, then charge, killing 1 suit. The squad automatically fails, then succesfully (!) falls back while my dreads consolidate 2 inches back towards cover. Turn 2 His hammerhead blows up one of my dreads and the other dread has a hull point removed by a glancing fusion blast. All of my reserves show up. I place one strike squad and dreadknight in his deployment zone behind his formation and place the other squad on my objective. My strike squad shoots up a fire warrior squad out of cover and inflicts 4 kills. My Dreadknight roasts 9 fire warriors from another squad. The dread plays peek a boo with the stealth suits. My defensive strike squad obliterates the kroot. Turn 3 He closes and rapidfires/shoots with what's left. 4 of my Knights in his deployment zone die and 3 wounds are taken off my Dreadknight. The fusion blaster manages to do nothing, and he dances away. My offensive Knights close the distance with the bigger fire warrior squad, shoot, and charge, wiping the squad. The Dreadknight stumbles up a bit and roasts 2 fire warriors. The dread yet again plays peek a boo with the stealth suits. Oh, and that stupid freakin shas'ui makes his leadership check and stays. Turn 4 He cleans up the offensive strike squad and dreadknight. The units that haven't fired begin to close in to my objective. The stealth suits manage to shake my dread, reducing him to 1 HP. The dread's fortitude passes, and he plays peek a boo a 3rd time. The defensive strike knights annihilate the stealth suits. Turn 5 Night Fight comes into effect. His long range stuff begins to close in. His Skyray takes a few pot shots at my defensive strike squad, dealing 2 casualties. My dread moves and runs to get into engagement range of the last freakin shas'ui to try to scoop up a victory. After this, my dread dies to missile pod fire, and he isn't fast enough to contest my objective. The game ends turn 6, and we both hold our objectives, ending in his win 5 to 3. Very bad luck coupled with a dangerous objective placement strategy led to the demise of my original defensive strike squad, which is what I think lost me this game. Had they stayed alive, I'd have a lot more firepower available to hit him on his home turf, and the way it turned out, that last strike squad would have made the difference between defeat and victory. A lucky win for him. Game 2: Ghost Knights vs MechBloods 2000 pts "6th Edition plunge" HQ Librarian: NWS, Shrouding, Sanctuary, MoT - 200 pts Troops Strike Squad: 10 Knights, 2 Psycannons, Dhammer - 230 pts Strike Squad: 10 Knights, 2 Psycannons, Dhammer - 230 pts Strike Squad: 10 Knights, 2 Psycannons, Dhammer - 230 pts Elites Techmarine: 90 pts Vindicare: 145 pts Heavy Support Purgation Squad: 5 Knights, 4 Psycannons - 180 pts Purgation Squad: 5 Knights, 4 Psycannons - 180 pts Dreadknight: HI, PT - 235 pts Fast Attack Interceptor Squad: 10 Knights, 2 Psycannons - 280 pts 2000 pts "MechBloods" HQ Mephiston Librarian: TDA, rolls for powers (got Gate and that nova S3 telekinesis power) Troops Assault Squad: 5 Marines, Mgun, Psword Assault Squad: 5 Marines, Mgun, Psword Elites Assault Terminator Squad: 3 TH/SS, 2 DLC Furioso Dread: Talons, Drop Pod Heavy Support Vindicator: Siege Shield Vindicator: Siege Shield Predator: ACannon, LC Sponsons Fast Attack LS Squadron: 3x HBolter/TML Baal Predator: TLAC, 2x HBolter, Sbolter Stormraven: PCannon, TLMM, Hurricane Bolter Mission: The Big Guns never tire, 3 objectives Deployment: The diagonal thingie Night fight is in effect turn 1. He sets up first. All of his army except for the assault squads, storm raven, and terminator squad are on the field deployed right at the top of the battle line. I deploy in my bolstered ruin with the Librarian right out in front (as I'll regret...), with my 2 strike squads and dreadknight reserved. Lo and behold, I seize the initiative this time. Turn 1 My Interceptors move across the right flank into cover behind a building and take a few potshots at the Baal Predator that had scouted up my right flank. Nothing else of note happens. His stuff advances into cover, and a vindicator shot manages to take out my Librarian in his opening shot. Rolled a 1 and a 2 for cover save and LOS!, which pretty much sucks, but I didn't really need him, so no big deal. A few knights die to TML missile fire, but not enough to affect my psycannon damage output. Turn 2 One squad of Knights show up. My Interceptors jump up, shoot the Baal Pred and charge, wrecking it. My entire army opens up, wrecking a vindicator, predator, and shaking the Furioso dread. His turn sees everything come in. One assault squad and the terminator squad jump in next to my interceptors, the storm raven flies towards my bunched up strike squad behind his lines, and the last assault squad jumps in close to the side of my castle/bunker thing. His shooting phase sees 1 interceptor killed, the backline strike squad killed, one of my strike squad combat squads reduced to 2 guys, and a few craters near my castle. Turn 3 My Dreadknight and strike squad show up from reserves (I forget to place the strike squad for the rest of the game though... derp!). My Shooting and assault phase see a few of the assault marines in front of my castle killed, the furioso dread exploded, 2 land speeders destroyed, and mephiston reduced to 1 wound. The Interceptors shunt to get a side shot on the vindicator, but fail their rolls pretty miserably. His turn sees a few purgation knights killed, my interceptors reduced to 1 man, my techmarine and combat squad killed by a perils and some failed armor saves, and Mephiston killed by an overwatch from the purgation squad he charged (Forced 2 armor saves... and rolled that 1). The stormraven zooms over to my dreadknight and puts a wound on him. Turn 4 My Dreadknight jumps up and hits the vindicator with... a burn mark. My vindicare scoffs and wrecks the vindicator. The rest of the army throws pot shots around to little effect. His assault squad that survived quite a bit jumps into my castle and shoots my vindicare, forcing the killing wound through. The stormraven flies over to my castle and engages my purgation squad, reducing their number by a lot (2 of one squad left and 1 of the other). The terminators Gate after the interceptor squad, scattering significantly off. His ignored assault squad jumps onto the nearby objective. Nothing else of note happens. Note: I'm glad that he took the bait and ignored my Dreadknight. This proved to be the game winner for me. Turn 5 My Dreadknight jumps toward the unmolested assault squad and flames them, killing one. The subsequent charge obliterates all but the sergeant, who scrapes at the DK's armor with his AP3 power sword. I fire at the assault squad with what's left of my castle security force, which reduces their number to 1. The subsequent charge is a tie with no casualties. My other 2 purgators rolled snake eyes on the charge, so they sat by and watched the mano y mano fight. The mano y mano fight ends in the assault marine's win, who then consolidates toward my last surviving strike knight. The Storm raven enters hover mode and lights up the strike squad and the remaining purgators, killing one purgator and one strike knight. It overheated with the plasma cannon, which is the only point of damage that was ever inflicted on it. The terminators advance towards my DK and try to charge, failing miserably. The DK pancakes the sergeant and sits on the objective. End Game: 8 VPs to 3 VPs, my win. I got 2 objectives, Slay the Warlord, and Linebreaker. He got First Blood, Slay the Warlord, and Linebreaker. What I find funny about this match is that I fought this match with a 250 point handicap and still managed to pull a solid win. Good stuff. It also looks like he played an illegal army, with 4 heavy choices. Stormravens are heavy in blood angels, not fast. (I play blood angels, so if I missed a faq saying we can take them as fast, someone please tell me, I would be happy to be proven wrong.) spartan249
Huh... I guess he did. Wouldn't be the first time he's done so. Oh well, he couldn't win even with a bogus list and a handicap, so whatever. spartan249
At the cost of having to take 2 HQs and 4 Troops as minimum FOC requirements. He had HQs covered but not troops.
