Death Company & Jump Packs

A DC unit shouldn't cost more than 250pts (not including the IC)

They aren't a Hammer, they are a diversion.

And I have no problem Drop Podding them with a Libby. Against 3+ I just take Prescience and Smite. Smite is fun out of a Drop Pod along with a selection of rapid firing bolters. Then you charge whatever is left next turn.

If your DC survive the game you either got very lucky or you aren't using them correctly.

I disagree. I think they are a BIG hammer. 15 Death Company with a Chaplain/Reclusiarch can do a lot of damage to some hard hitting units, even Terminators. 5 attacks each on the charge, re-rolling hits and re-rolling wounds is massive. Those Terminators are taking something like 50 saves. Add in hammers/Powerfists and you can do a really good job against a large unit of terminators.

A little math.

15 Death Company & Reclusiarch (2 power weapons, 2 thunderhammers & 1 powerfist) VS 10 Terminators with Thunderhammers & Storm Shields.

Death Company on the charge.

10 CCW’s & 2 Power Weapons

To Hit – 60 attacks – 60 * 0.66 – 40 hits, 20 misses

Re-roll fails – 20 * 0.66 – 13.33 hits, 7.66 misses – 53.33 hits total

To Wound – 53.33 * 0.66 – 35.55 wounds

Re-roll fails – 17.78 * 0.66 – 11.85 Wounds – 47.4 total Wounds

Termie Sv’s – 47.4 * 0.833 – 39.5 Saves, 7.9 Fails

~ 8 Termies Dead.

Terminators Hit Back

To Hit – 4 attacks – 4 *0.5 – 2 hits, 2 misses.

To Wound – 2 * 0.833 – 1.66 Wounds

~ 2 Death Company Dead.

Power Fist & Thunderhammers

To Hit – 12 Attacks – 12 *0.66 – 8 hits, 4 misses

Re-roll – 4 * 0.66 – 2.66 hits, 1.33 misses – 10.66 hits total

To Wound – 10.66 * 0.66 – 7.11 Wounds, 3.55 misses

Re-Roll – 3.55 * 0.66 – 2.36 Wounds, 9.47 Wounds Total

Termies Invul Sv’s – 9.47 * 0.66 – 6.31 Saves, 3.16 Fails

~ 3.16 Termies Dead.

So basically a unit of Terminators with Thunderhammers and Storm Shields are wiped out when charged by 15 Death Company and a Reclusiarch. I didn’t even include the Reclusiarch Attacks in that math or even shooting attacks before charging.

The Death Company Unit with the Reclusiarch comes to about 575pts (including Infernus Pistols). The Terminator Squad is between 400 – 450 pts depending on codex. That is pretty mean considering that only two death company bite the dust in the mathhammer above.

If we were to re-do this scenario but all with CCW’s and BP’s, we might get something better against this particular unit.

15 CCW’s

To Hit – 75 attacks – 75 * 0.66 – 50 hits, 25 misses

Re-roll fails – 25 * 0.66 – 16.66 hits, 8.34 misses – 66.66 hits total

To Wound – 66.66 * 0.66 – 44.44 wounds, 22.22 Fails

Re-roll fails – 22.22 * 0.66 – 14.81 Wounds – 59.25 total Wounds

Termie Sv’s – 59.25 * 0.833 – 49.375 Saves, 9.875 Fails

~ 9.8 Termies Dead.

With the Reclusiarch you could kill all 10 of them before they even strike you back. Of course your versatility becomes limited against vehicles and high toughness models. The cost of this unit then becomes 430pts for the full unit, costing roughly the same as the Thundernators. Once again shooting attacks before charging were not taken into account.

Of course getting the charge off is vitally important. Thats why I stick these guys in a Land Raider Crusader. Armour 14 protection and an assault ramp to charge after disembarking.

AND the crusader will makeup for the bolter fire loses (somewhat) from using boltpistol/ccw. Getting off the charge means you can justify the lose in str4 ap5 shots but an extra WS5 Str5 attk on the charge!! (And the extra attack benefits from the Litany of Blood two-folds!!!!!!!!!)

Crusader will be the only way to deliver my mad men.
