"This is my rifle..." (My Imperial Fists thread)

Recommended Posts

"This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine." Well, here's the start to my Imperial Fists force. Nothing really special about it, but this one is mine:

I was kicking around the idea of painting up some Imperial Fists when the Games Day 2012 miniature was unveiled. I think it's a great mini, and I like the old school color scheme...a lot more variation than how the Blood Angels are typically depicted. True, he's a captain and that's why he has more flair, but when looking at that old 2nd Ed. art I noticed some of the troops were different too. Not every little part of their armor was red.

Anyways, I wanted to apply some of that aesthetic to my Imperial Fists. I've always liked the black trim of the 5th Company, which meshes well with the black and white quartered markings found in the Insignium Astartes. Here are my first few tests and the beginning of my IF force:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r33hzi_F7dM/T7_nCAPTTNI/AAAAAAAAAIA/MXCqzAzZ3ZU/s320/IMG_2012.JPGhttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rT1_XmvRXVw/T7_xbu-kAqI/AAAAAAAAAIg/sbSxtYWSxrQ/s320/Pages%20from%20Insignium%20Astartes.jpg

In Ultramarines the movie, the IF 5th Co. is wiped out. I like to think that my force represents it's rebuilding. Given the Fists' scrimshandering ways, I can see that the new brothers of the 5th mark their armor with more black than those of other companies.

You can see from the group shot that I couldn't make up my mind about the yellow recipe. There are three different yellows, all combinations using the old paint line. I don't know that it shows up very well in the pics though (can you pick them out?):

I think I need to pick out the 3D chapter symbols with some more highlighting, they kind of just look like black blobs instead of fists. I added a little paint over the decals to make them blend with the model better.

I think I've settled on my yellow, which is good because these marines need a sergeant! He's up next, until then, let me know what you think.

Huzzah! The sergeant is finished and so is my first little squad of Imperial Fists. As mentioned in my last IF post, my Fists might differ in their color scheme from the standard. If I were to strictly follow IF canon, I think the sergeants should have a yellow helmet with a red stripe or skull badge. However, I've decided to follow a more universal codex marine scheme, similar to what you'd see on Ultras. So, red helmed sarge:

I've always liked the mini below. I guess I'm a sucker for the raised power fist stance. I built my sergeant with this guy in mind:

I'm still not thrilled with how the sculpted pauldrons are coming out. If anyone has helpful suggestions on how to make these look better, please leave a comment or link.

I think I'll switch gears from here, work on some other unit before pushing this to a 10 man. I love Space Marines, but it's good to rotate away from tac marine after tac marine.

Here are a couple of test scouts, and I think I'm satisfied with the way they came out. I originally planned to give them black pants/sleeves, but decided I liked the contrast of the gray against the black boots and pouches.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D4gLIqF-4qs/T-2-7kb2wqI/AAAAAAAAAOY/DyyihHM6Wso/s320/IMG_2046.JPG

My inspiration for the scheme came mostly from this art:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xWDrV_zEXLk/T-2-8Pfw2YI/AAAAAAAAAOk/-gCt95T6s8w/s320/IMG_2047.JPG

I left things pretty simple on these guys, didn't get into the details much beyond the markings. I think I'll finish the squad in this manner, and then put a little more into the sergeant.

Couple more scouts in the pipe, and then I'm thinking about some conversion work for the sarge, so stay tuned! Let me know what you think about the tests, and what I can do to make future scouts better.

These look great, that's a really nice rich, smooth yellow. What recipe did you settle on in the end? Also, good call on the grey fatigues on the scouts, it looks a lot better than black would've.

Very clean and sharp - some of the nicest Fists I've seen! Really great detail work on the sarge throughout, especially on the helmet. You did a great job replicating your inspiration sources as well. Very admirable!

Can't wait for more

Coolest IF's I have seen in a while. 5th Company always seem to look the coolest with the black thrown in. IF's with overbearing red tossed on the yellow looks too much like a McDonalds ad or something, not grimdark like these fellows look. Also, I love that piece of artwork with the scout. I think you captured that perfectly on to the models. :)

Very nice indeed. If I could paint a nice Golden yellow like that id have a fists army for sure

Look forward to seeing more of these guys

EDIT - corrected my late night poor spelling!

Awesome sons of Dorn there brother. The Fists were my first army when I started collecting 40K, and you've done their colour scheme proud. I like the variance you've introduced as well, very characterful (and if it bends canon slightly, so what - the Fists aren't identical automatons). May I ask if you actually have the GD miniature? When I first saw it an Imperial Fist paint scheme was the first thing that popped into my head and I think you could do it justice, as long as you gritted it up a little.

Look forward to seeing more! :tu:

Awesome looking Fists! Love the yellow you have, its nice and clean. And your freehand is amazing.

I like the extra details on the tactical's, and applying an alternative company badge to them, I think that works rather well.

Like others, I eagerly await your next installment.

Really good work! As others have said, your yellow is great. Can't really think of any advice. I suppose you could do some custom poses with more scouts (I know the arms in the kit pretty much always result in the arms out to each side).

Looking forward to seeing more!

Wow! Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments! These IF have been a lot of fun so far.

jamsight: thanks! Termies are up next (after scout squad is finished, just the sarge to do now!)

A Kvlt Ghost: Thanks a lot! I spent a lot of time getting that yellow, so it's nice to see that others like it. I hate to send you somewhere else, but you'll get the answer a lot faster if I don't have to convert the HTML to BBcode! Here's my post on my IF yellow mix: Imperial Fists yellow paint

BrotherCaptainArkhan: Thanks! Unfortuanately, I do not have the GD mini...at some point down the road, I'll see if I can Ebay it if the price isn't too crazy. I appreciate the vote of confidence though!

Brother Syth: Thanks, there's quite a bit of freehand on the tacs, but I have a confession when it comes to the chapter symbol: I applied decals and then painted over them. While it's more work than just applying the transfer, I really like the result when the shading and paint is applied over the symbol...makes it blend and fit with the model a lot better. Sooo...I'm a cheater!

Kierdale: Thanks! You're right about those poses. I may have to do some converting in the future, maybe mix in some of the older metal minis

Everyone: Thanks again for checking out this thread and for the kind words, I really appreciate it!

I just finished off a couple more scouts. I can't seem to settle on how I want to paint things, so there are some little differences here. I took the yellow highlight a little higher and changed my red up a little.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WHFuJVYnyEo/T_36VeYNYoI/AAAAAAAAAQA/p4OocX68ttQ/s320/IMG_2076.JPG

Also, I changed the black up some, adding in blue from the Space Wolves family for all layers. I don't know if any of these changes actually come across in the pics, but in person, I'm liking the black better.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z6DHa8NemhY/T_36Q681MTI/AAAAAAAAAPg/JMHoHh5rCjU/s320/IMG_2063.JPG

I think I mentioned this before, but when it comes to the chapter badge I start with a decal and then paint over it. I think the transfer blends to the rest of the model better once it's shaded and highlighted. Also, my painting is not perfect, so that decal looks way too crisp and neat by itself!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2d28jVAxi4k/T_36R-lRfTI/AAAAAAAAAPo/Q2AcVmrhps8/s320/IMG_2065.JPG

I changed the skin up too, partly to try something new and partly because I just finished Sons of Dorn. The recruits come from all over, so I don't think I'll have a set skin recipe.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SzYTrjZBRWY/T_36TeRbc1I/AAAAAAAAAPw/bHZDY6pp-YU/s320/IMG_2067.JPG

Again, I've missed some details that I'll have to come back for, but these are done for now. Painted the lens on one scout but not on the gun of the other...Doh!

Great looking Scouts! Just a quick question though: If I get it correctly, you're using a mix of Averland Whatsit and Yriel Yellow and then highlighting it all up with white?

Cheers,

Ludovic

Ludovic: Thanks man! No, I'm still using the old GW paint line. The mix I finally like is:

Tausept Ochre (1) : Golden Yellow (4) : Sunburst Yellow (2) : Skull White (2) - I filled a dropper bottle with this ratio so I stay consistent and don't go completely insane!

Yes, I'm an idiot. But it's a nice golden yellow without being fluorescent/dayglo, like the old Golden Yellow could seem. I add Skull white to that mix for highlighting, first 1:1, then 2 parts Skull : 1 part I.F. mix on this most recent batch of scouts.

However, Averland Sunset is pretty dang close to the mix I made. When I have to make the switch to the new line, I'm sure a mix of it and Yriel will be comperable.

almightyjesus55: Thanks! Yours are looking good too, I may have to do some red bolter casings myself

You've seen the scout squad in recent posts, and here's their sergeant. When I started, I thought I'd simply add a power fist and a head swap. Once the fist was on though, I realized that power fists don't look quite right on scouts, even though I tried to find a smaller one. Things looked out of balance, so I set to fixing it, and making up fluff as I went along.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-g0FT4sEkn8Y/UAWGEom3bfI/AAAAAAAAAQw/MZtQ36dZJ2g/s320/IMG_2082.JPG

This particular scout sergeant took on his role as trainer/teacher after the catastrophe on Mithron, being transferred from his original company to help with the rebuilding effort. He continues to use bits of his armor even in this role, but for good reasons. He maintains his poleyns, greaves and sabatons to provide stability as he weilds the power fist. And since the fist is always "up close and personal" with the enemy, he has kept the full sized pauldron on that side for added protection.

So yeah, I was basically making modifications to get the model visually balanced. The original scout legs didn't look like a 'solid base' to me, and the fist without the pauldron didn't look at home.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ayu0wsag73U/UAWGDvutP3I/AAAAAAAAAQo/e_CAKtyDpeQ/s320/IMG_2078.JPG

I actually built this guy before 6th Edition came out. I'm not through all the new rules yet, but my original plan will now have to change. I was going to run a mixed force of Imperial Fists and Raven Guard with Shrike and one of several other characters. The army would consist of in-your-face elements and supporting, long range elements. As you have probably already guessed, the aggressive portion would consist of assault terminators infiltrating with Shrike and IC #2 (ex. Lysander, Libby, Khan for Furious Charge for LC termies or S5 I5 scouts), as well as 1 or 2 large squads of infiltrating and scouting scout squads. This element would be further supported by a couple of dreadnoughts dropping in, putting a large force right on the enemy's door step. With the changes to Infiltrate, Fleet, and Furious Charge, my plan lost it's teeth.

Oh well, I still like the model and am painting him up now. Let me know what you think so far!

Thanks guys, paint is underway

Brother Syth: I had to look those up, but you're right! I unknowingly put him in the same stance as the tyranid attack sarge

Inquisitor Engel: I'm doing a giveaway on my blog, and the power fist plays a part, so I can't comment on it at the moment. Go check it out, I'm giving away a marine squad!

A Kvlt Ghost: Thanks man. I'm using VCT floor tile and play sand, I did an article on my older blog here:

basing-legion-of-damned

I'll eventually get that article moved over to 40K Giveaway
