An Old Man Comes Back to 40K and the DA

Hey all.

I have been lurking for awhile now and going through the forums day after day getting my inspiration together. I haven't played 40K in almost twenty years and I had my first game back at the GW store in Columbia, MD a few days ago. It was extremely fun and thanks to Tony for taking the time to run me through a game against his Chaos Space Marines.

Although the army was completely primed in Army Painter Angel Green it felt weird playing with an un-painted army. I haven't painted anything in 20 years so it was extremely humbling this afternoon getting back into it.

I came up with a table top, five color, two wash paint scheme to get the army painted quickly. Once I get some practice in I will go back and do some edge highlights and some extra detail painting.

Here is my first mini in 20 years:

I want to have the whole army painted by my next game. I am using the DA Codex (no vanilla marine book here) and the army is a very basic list. Belial, two terminator squads, two tactical squads, a scout squad, Predator and a Dread. I was able to get this guy done in under an hour. If i set up an assembly line system and paint the same color at once on several different mini's this should go quick. Hopefully I will be able to get my painting standards up quickly and be on par with some of the fantastic work here at the Bolter!

I also took a little of the inspiration to get my blog set up. I figure this will put a little pressure on me to get things done and be posting my results every few days.

Back to painting!

Nice model – great style and colour scheme – and welcome to the Rock mdaro. Can't wait to see more of your Angels.

Cheers

Thank you! I love your site. I've spent many hours poking around there. The Fortress was the biggest influence on me to get back into playing the DA's.

welcome back brother

Thank you! It's good to be back. I didn't realize how much fun it would still be after all of these years.

Welcome. You will find this to be a very friendly site. I haven't been on here long myself but enjoy coming here too. Model looks great and your base looks awesome. Enjoy. 6th ed. to me seems well set up and your getting back into this from 2nd to now will be good for you too not have to forget 5th ed rules. your transition should be easy.

as an another "old blood" gamer, welcome back to the addict...hobby and the rock. I came back about a year ago, and it has been awesome. I really got inspired when I shifted from Black Templars back to being unforgiven, there are some talented people doing some insaneley creative stuff here. Capt semper, bryan blair, stobz, and elmo to name a few.

and please, please don't be humbled by your work, it's amazing. the only problem I have with it is I want more!

Thanks all! I have been lurking here for awhile as well as on some other 40K forums and this really seemed like the most helpful, informative group. Thankfully I am off today and plan on doing some painting! In between the first tact squad I am going to paint some of these for a little side project:

I know I said i was going to do a tact squad today I wanted to try my hand at some vehicle painting and weathering. I need to touch up a few things and make some changes but I'm happy with the overall effect and once all of the exhaust-gun barrel drilling is done and all of the metal parts have been highlighted and washed down again I think they overall effect will just fine.

I'm not going to obsess about getting everything perfect. The edge highlighting looks much better in person. Another thing I have to practice is my photography. It looks very drastic and sharp in the pictures but it's much more blended looking in person. I was going for slightly better then tabletop quality so I am very happy with the overall look on the table. I'm just not crazy about the way they look in the photos.

The edge highlighting is a brown, green sponge mix that looks fantastic ( at least I think) in person but it looks horrible and "blobby" in the pics.

I'm moving on though!

mDaro, not sure what you are worried about on the weathering, it does look really, really good. It's all looking very good, I think you should be very proud of these guys while playing!

My only suggestion: maybe some scorching around the barrels of the multi-melta?

Yes! Good call!

I'm actually happy with the way it looks more in person then the photos. I'll take someat better ones tonight. It looks blotchy and very stark in the photos. It looks less thrown together in persoqwertyn. Tact squad tonight.

very nice looking models :( I love the razorback!

And welcome back to the Rock brother

I've actually gone back and re-painted the razorback.....thought the tanks looked a little plain so I changed things around a little.......the razorback will have green insets and the guns on the predator will be tan to match the insets as well as the top turret venting will be tan on the predator. I still need to touch up the green, some over spray here and there.
