Long Fangs

Now that glances are king, heavy bolters are pretty damn good for a second long fang pack imo. Nearly as many glances against AV 11 as krak missiles, and more against AV 10 so they're great against Rhinos, Trukks, rear armour etc. They're also probably the most glances per point spent against flyers in our army. (They'll average just under a glance per turn vs AV 10 flyers, half that against AV11)

 

Plus of course, they're very good at their primary role of shooting infantry.

I've read an article, admittedly second-hand, where Ward says "nobody has flakk right now."

 

So, for the nonce, nobody in the SW order of battle, short of Njal, can touch flyers. And he can't do so directly.

 

In the long run, though, 3 ML per LF pack. At a minimum.

Bleh, back again, uni has stopped me chasing my interests.

 

Not knowing much about this new rule set. I will probably opt for, in a pack;

 

2 ML 1 HB 2 Las

 

And

 

2 ML, 3 PC

 

largely due to avaliblity of equipment, and PC makes fairly decent anti transport weapons.

 

I also toyed with the idea of having mini Long Fang packs composed of just plasma squad of:

 

2PC + Rhino

 

And just driving them with the grey hunter pack, spewing inaccurate templates everywhere as they roll up. Probably hugely impractical and essencally a really expensive plasma tank. XD

You cant disembark from a rhino and shoot with PCs, so would not be the best grp to use =)

You could, but it is only one shot at 24" (you aren't likely to have your Fangs within 12" for at least a few turns), with a 1/3 chance of missing. This isn't the worst thing in the world, but you could probably spend the points elsewhere.

With the on set of Drop Pods taking the role of vehicles there might be more of a call for it. I usually take a one Long Fang as a casualty before I remove my control fire ability, the second wound going to the Sgt. However, this trick will now be much more difficult with the new wound allocation rule.

I personally go 5 Missile Launchers but I do have 2 Lascannons to chuck in when I have the points spare but generally the MLs feel like better value for money. I certainly avoid loadouts that require me to split fire as it's a luxury to do so but I generally see the pack leader as a bargain 2nd wound for one of my missile launchers and the chance to harrass a couple of transports with the same squad early game to grind my opponent to a halt if he doesn't die first.

 

I fancy a third squad going all Plasma Cannon though. I've been on the receiving end of a Vanilla Dev squad packing 4 PCs and they caused a lot of trouble for me before I could put them all down. Fancy a piece of that for myself! :)

Not too late yet, I haven't glued the weapons in yet. I have been toying with the idea of magnets, but have been wondering if it is wasted effort? How many times would I want to change the weapon options really?

In terms of the 3 man squad, I don't intend to disembark them from the Rhino, just shuttle them around and ping away with templates. Though I have the feeling thats not possible, I admit I haven't read the 6th edition codex yet, so most of my knowledge is second hand.

 

As for the larger pack... I'm not even sure if I have 3 plasma cannons. XD So I might change it around later. I still am unsure about the heavy bolter, though it is probably a decent idea for pack using PC.
