Vegeta
I've always wanted to give my models that extra boost in there appearance, just wondered if anybody knew what Varnish to use... I would want to give the models, a shiny finish but to also protect the paint mainly, I hear there are a few different types, just wondered if anybody knew which one is best for protecting your models, as well as giving them a nice shine, thankyou. Razblood
If you want them to shine then it'd be a gloss varnish you'd be after. GW's Ardcoat isn't too bad, but quite expensive for what you get. Vallejo do a range of varnishes and are very reasonably priced. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/256289-varnish/#findComment-3118668 Share on other sites
Seleucus
Testors would be my suggestion - for all finishes, from matt to gloss. However, I would suggest you do not go too glossy as this tends to hide detail and looks rather 'toy soldierish'! A satin finish is usually best for the armour, with gloss possibly painted on the gold/metalics etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/256289-varnish/#findComment-3118972 Share on other sites
richmarine
I've found that a gloss varnish is excellent for detailed models if done right. I use this method only for a few one off minitures; Just Paint your model with some highlighting. perhaps a shade brighter than you usually would. and then hit it with some gloss varnish. for that extra special mini i recommend tamiya high detail gloss- its waffer thin and doesn't obscure detail, then hit the mini with different washes. The gloss will repel the wash on flat surfaces dependant on how watery you have your wash mixed. This way if you use a normal wash on a head for example you will Matt the entire surface but it will pool where you want it. If you thin your wash down for armour, the paint will collect into the recesses leaving an instant shading effect. On Vehicles this is especially useful. For a further effect you now have an ultra hard surface to weather. using thinners, oils and weathering powder to improve the worn look of tanks. I would then use a satin varnish/matt to seal everything (who wants a shiney tank?). staxer
Army Painter do a really good Matt Varnish. For Gloss & Satin I use Vallejo Sprays and a Vallejo Gloss paint varnish. GW sprays I find are poor Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/256289-varnish/#findComment-3119889 Share on other sites
whiteraven17708
I use Krylon clear coat they come in matte satin and gloss (personnally I use more satin then anything). but its cheap and it works great down side is if you ever havta strip the model it wont strip for nothing. but I have models that have been clear-coated this way for years and had no issues or problems or chipping Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/256289-varnish/#findComment-3120502 Share on other sites
