Dreadnoughts: Grim Dead Walking?

Recommended Posts

Hello all:

I wanted to ask, what with the changes to glancing hits taking a hull point, and in addition that krak grenades now can be placed on a walker at normal WS rolls (normally 4+), why use these venerated heroes now? Gets hot also contains a section stating that vehicles, including walkers, get hot on a roll of a 1, 2, or 3 (Should be Gets Hot on a 1, then glancing hit on 1, 2, or 3), in addition to the rest above. My personal favorite Dread, the PC, DCCW & (whatever) sub weapon just essentially became the Dead-now, as it were.

Considering I personally love Dreadnoughts, and typically used the following four:

- Bjorn, PC

- Dread, PC, DCCW, SB/HF, EA, WTN

- Dread x 2 - TLLC, ML (each)

What loadout(s) do I change, if any? Considering that whenever we get skyfire missiles and at whatever points, will two Dreads with ML's make up for the fact that they can be taken out now in CC so much easier? 4's on a D6 are on average a 50% chance per model attempting to place the grenades; three hits and the Dread is gone.

Vehicles just aren't as reliable for being Plasma platforms. I have the arms for a Rifleman Dread, and one Dread that seems to need a new loadout. Swap, or keep it as is?

I'm thinking to hell with it and take on the foe with the equipment I love. There's just the issue of glancing my own Dreads to death now...

Thoughts?

Edit: thanks for the reply, I seem to have mis-typed that section. You are correct, thanks for catching that.

I may have misread what you posted but gets hot is only triggered on a roll of 1. It is then that a model either takes a wound or a vehicle takes a glancing hit on another roll of 1,2 or 3. So not quite ignores gets hot as before but still a viable weapons choice

with the PC's, Bjorn's not much of an issue; you basically roll 2 dice and hope for anything other than snake eyes. He can't snap with the PC, but he still has the Hvy Flamer for overwatch, and can challenge most things that would have a non-grenade weapon to hurt him in CC. The things he can't challenge, he can precision strike on a 6 with his Str 10 AP 2 claw. For the others lacking the reroll, yeah that sucks; maybe move away from non-Bjorn PCs.

keep in mind the following though:

Krak grenades dropped to 4+ to hit, but still need 6's to glance... not a certainty by any means.

Melta Bombs are unwieldy now, so you'll be striking first.

On top of that, I'd switch your loadout to an AC or TL Auto (but not full rifleman), and take a Hvy Flamer, that way if they want to bomb you, they have to get past the overwatch shots from the AC and the flamer.

TLDR: Dreads are pretty awesome, you just have rethink them in the scope of 6th.

Viable yes, however, is it unreliable enough to alter its usage? Plasma Cannons that is.

I guess the reason I ask is I love my Dreads being PC platforms, however, there's the new chance for them to take a glancing hit.

So, in short, is a one in six chance followed by a 50% chance enough to switch out a weapon loadout on a Dread? Might be, it's just got me thinking.

Thanks for the clarification. I'd consider TLAC for range, maybe an AC for the number of shots. Thanks for the food for thought, Iacton, and Dawn.

I don't really see why the designers felt that Plasma on weapons needed to be incorporated into the whole Gets Hot mess. What drove that? Why bother? It's not like people were cleaning house with their PC Dreads in 5e.

Anyway, it is equally disappointing to me, as I'm not likely to use many dreads in 6e, and I've got that Forgeworld Dread with a Plasma Cannon that I really, really wanted to use.

I get that they wanted to tone down mech and vehicles a tad in 6e, and that is probably justified, but it seems like they over-adjusted significantly.

Why? A tank is suppose to be scarey. Now they are jokes. I can glance a tank to pieces with my Long Fangs so fast it is silly. With Pen hiting doing damage you were forced to roll good. Meaning a tank could last way long then anyone thought. or buy it first hit.

They should hae left the tank rules the way they where. This totally ruined the game for me. That and dragging up weapon types again. It was dropped for a reason. If you want to bring that crap back then make the melee fights like in 2nd Edtion so the models faced off and pushed each other around.
