Painting scales.

Hello fellow painters!

I checked the forums for a thread covering the art of painting scales (snakes, dragons, lizards you name it) but could not find any. And i checked youtube and did a Google search but didn't find anything that satisfied me. So I'm turning to you guys to see if any of you have some good advice or even a tutorial on how to get those free hand snake/dragon/lizard scales painted so that they actually look like actual scales.

I looked at pg. 298 in the 6th Ed rulebook and figured that I should have some of my Chosen Alpha legion dudes and a sorcerer having scales on their armour, but my trial and error trying to paint scales both triangular and oval ones isn't going all that well.

My method at the moment is to paint a rather thick V-shaped line of DA green and highlight the outer edges of the V with a 50/50 blend of DA Green and Goblin Green and then a final highlight of the outer edge with just Goblin Green.

Some of the scales look pretty desent, but most of them just look askew and crooked. Does anyone have any suggestion to how to get good skales on an oval surface such as shoulder pads?

Before you start practicing you might want to take a wee look at Freakiq's Scale and Alpha Legion Tutorial. I'm planning on using it to paint some Alpha Legion soon-ish ^_^.
