Darkseer Returns to the Wolves

Hi guys,

Well, after selling off the Space Wolves blog after Christmas, dabbling with Chaos, Orks, Eldar and settling on a Highl Elf army for Warhammer Fantasy, I am returning to the Space Wolves.

However, I need your help on choosing which of 3 themes to go for.

My Reasons for Returning:

I needed to pick a damn army and stick to it!

Marc plays Grey Knights

James plays Dark Angels and Thousand Sons.

The perfect army to fit into all this are the Space Wolves for obvious fluff based reasons.

I love the Space Wolves' character.

The models are awesome.

Just for the record, I'm not blogging anymore. I simply don't have the time and now that I'm rapidly approaching 30, I need to wrap up a lot of things in my life. Warhammer and 40K armies being one of the big things to wrap up! I'll still add units on a casual basis of course.

3 Space Wolves Themes:

Like my High Elves I'm just going to take my time and beautifully paint my Space Wolves army.

However, I have 3 approaches in mind, which I want your feedback on.

1) Ragnar's Wolves

Take the basic SW kit and paint it beautifully in the traditional Space Wolves colours.

Only convert the characters to insane levels of detail.

Pros: Lowest cost. Lots of conversion opportunities

Cons: Looks like everyone else's Space Wolves

2) The Wolf at The Door

MKIV Forgeworld Armour. Very clean grey miniatures with red wolf logos.

The only feral bling would be the odd wolf tail here and there.

No bare heads.

Pros: Nicely themed pre heresy army. Unique.

Cons: High cost (Forgeworld). Limited conversion opportunities. Limited unit selection.

3) Propero Burns

A whole army of my old Pre Heresy Space Wolves conversions

This is pure madness. Last time I attempted this I burned out from all the converting.

Also, back then I wasn't good enough to paint these models that well.

But having learned a lot in the last 6 months, I think I'm up to the painting challenge.

Pros: Looks awesome

Cons: Very High cost. Massively time consuming.

At the moment I'm thinking of going with option 1 (Ragnar's Wolves) and going conversion crazy on my characters while animating my Space Wolves a little more rather than draping them in feral bling.

But as always, I like to hear your thoughts

Adam

You could always start with option 1, then add in specialist units from FW at a later date.

Doing them ragnar theme doesnt neccessarily mean you have to do baby blue, mine are almost white, with dark gloss red shouldpads and knee pads, and helmet colours per unit.

if your going to take your time with them, then do what you want to do, and make it work for you.

for instance mine are all 2nd ed lead minis, with the 5th ed arms and weaponry, and maximini pads on the terminators, and iron and bronze jump packs going onto the blood claws shortly.

its a nice level of bling without being over the top wolfy Mcwolfenson wolf.

good to see you back darkseer!

since you say you want to wrap up a bit on the 40K side i'd say go with option 1. why, it's the most inexpensive. think of the cost if you wanted to say,do a 2000pts battle with option 2 or 3.

personnally I find myself having a ton of conversion oportunities, even for a bog standard greyhunter by making use of the space wolf box, the standard tactical squad and offcourse the chaos kits. not a single SW in your army will have to be the same.

I'd put in a veto against option 3, just because you'll get tired of those static poses IMO

Good to see you back with the Wolves. I followed your blog quite closely while you were still running it, and got a lot of conversion ideas from you...which is why I would have voted for option 3, simply because I try to highly convert each of my models as you did with your pre-heresy era army.

Definitely interested to see how your new clan will turn out though, especially the character conversions!

If you go for 'option one' you can still make them look unique without converting them all.

Kit bashing is easy to do for any Marine army and looks good too.

Running legs from Assault Marines, and using the better parts from Chaos Marines [as some bits look a bit naff due to the age of the kits, etc] plus varying the ratio of Marine to Wolf parts all adds diversity :cuss

Option 1 it is.

Like you guys say, it's the most sensible option with the most conversion freedom.

Ah, it feels good to be back with the Wolves!

Wait a minute! I didn't get to vote!!! :cuss

I would have selected option 2 but with more armor mixes. (mark III ;) and V  )

I would suggest 1 but with a twist

1. There is no harm adding a mix of armour types into your units. As a first founding I believe each great company would have a lots of different amour and weapons from different points in history.

2. I would suggest choosing a great company other than Ragnar's. If you want to do something different select a great company you like the fluff for and theme it along the lines of that fluff (e.g. Eric Morkai or Bran Redmoon).

3. With allies you could paint up some chapter serfs as imperial guardsmen. Would offer lots of conversion opportunities and mixing 40k and wfb kits together.
