Deathwing

I have collected and played Dark Angels since my introduction into 40K back in 2000. At first, I was very good about assembly and painting, I was a long term Battletech player and had all of my mech painted. But, like many of you, as my collection grew, I would assemble and field them and skip the paint part. Part of the problem was I had an influx of money I could use on 40k, I traveled a lot and all of my travel money went to 40K. So before long, I had over 12,000 points in Dark Angels with only about 3000 points painted.

In 2007, I started an Iron Warriors army told myself I would not buys anything else until each unit was assembled, painted and flocked. Everything I have for my chaos forces has been painted except for my 3 super heavy tanks and a couple of Medusa Siege Guns.

So anyway, I have a 3300 point Deathwing army including a Storm Eagle Assault Gunship. I assembled and painted it in a weekend, and that has sparked my desired to FINALLY finish my Deathwing. I re-primered every unit, including 2 Land Raiders and began an assembly-line process. I began by painting the crux terminates and other symbols with a base of grey, a wash of badab black them a fully dry brush of skull white. I think they turned out pretty decent.

The next step was painting all weapon muzzles in bolt gun metal then a wash in badab black. Then the gun houses will be painted in a dark red. When I get to that step, I will upload more photos.

Here are some photos of my Deathwing.

Fulminata:

This will be quite a force once you've finished the painting. The crux is looking good. I have a question: the center land raider, is it a vindi-raider? I'm not familiar with the variant, but it looks brutal.

That is Land Raider Ares, a Land Raider variant created by the Dark Angels Chapter... and it is just what you suspected it of being: a Land Raider that ate a Vindicator. The rules can be found on Games Workshop's website (PDF) as well as Imperial Armour - Apocalypse II... I may have the wrong IA. I'm away from my collection right now.

This is an incredibly great collection! More painting pictures, please!

Wow! Great work! How did you do your Ares? I have the two kits sitting on the shelf. I haven't looked at piecing them together yet. How much scratch building did you have to do?

Thank you for the comments. That is a Land Raider Ares, kit bashed from a Vindicator andLland Raider Prometheus. I may have some construction pictures on my computer, I will check and upload.

Any, I used the front and quad-linked Heavy Bolters of the Prometheus, used green stuff to tack the demolisher cannon in place and a few rhino doors as top armor. It was originally primered in black, but I have since re-primered in Skelton bone.

I will also try to take a few more close up pictures of the Ares to show the front construction, it is not perfect, but it works.

@Fulminata: Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Ares limited to twin-linked Heavy Flamer sponsons? I've just double checked most of the new IA books, and it looks like the Ares only exists in the *.PDF on GW's homepage.

if I recall to build the ares you build the LR as normal and the front end of the vindi and combine the 2, just need to be careful with the 2 vindi pieces as they dont quiet fit between the LR tracks so need trimming.

Then your left with a rhino and an ares.

There was a guide somewhere.

Oh man, seriously considering building an Ares now. I've got a NIB Vindicator and a NIB Godhammer sitting here, ripe for the picking.

Anyone want to talk me out of it? :cuss

Here are some more photos of my Deathwing with some close-ups of my Ares. I haven't been able to find the original construction photos, but these will give a clear image of how I put it together. By the way, I am not the world's greatest kitbasher, as you will see in these photos, but it works, so I am happy.

As you can see I did not follow the instructions and widen the dozen blade, it also does not sit flush with the ground.

Here some other photos of my terminators:

Yes it is, but I also used the Apoc rules for creating legendary units. I didn't like the sponson heavy flamers, and I REALLY wanted a Prometheus, so I combined the two. But I also left off the twin-linked assault cannons. I till use the same points as the *.pdf file, but slightly modified.

Here are a few more pictures of my Deathwing. I added some detail; white on all the angel wings, blue for power weapons, black for Belial's Heavenfall Blade. When I come back from leave I am going to try and finish the terminators. I am undecided if I want to paint their right shoulder pads green. It would add a solid color to each, but how would it look with the red Deathwing decal? Anyone have any pictures of such?
