Ravenguard WIP

I always liked the look and feel of the Ravenguard so I have finally succumbed and started a raven guard army. Currently, I am working on painting my first minis but I have decided on which paints to use for the most part. Sorry for the bad pictures. I'll try to take some with a better device soon.

My first scout test mini ...

I will also be fielding a large unit of terminators (with Shrike). I have already assembled a few landspeeders. I will get some assault marines as well.

For the terminators I have made some custom storm shields. And as requested by a friend, I'll post here some WIP pictures of using the moulds.

The shield uses a bretonian men-at-arms shield as a base. I then added some forgeworld ravenguard brass etching to it. From this piece I made a mould using blue stuff. I also made another blue stuff mould from the back of a standard terminator storm shield.

I then cast the shield multiple times using green stuff.

After cleaning up the greenstuff cast (trimming flash, etc.), I just glued the pieces together

And the final result (with an additinal purity seal attached) ...

I have used the forgeworld brass etching and while it's a pain to use as these things are so tiny, I do like the result.

More to come ...

Very nice! Looks good. I need to make a mold for a storm shield, looks like I found a good base, the Brett's shield.

In any case looks great, can't wait to see more!

I couldn't find me a spare brett shield so I took one of the 40k shields and used the blu stuff on it. Worked well, it is on one of my command models. I even casted a second one for my future coming vanguard vets squad. Again, thanks for the idea.

BTW, any progress?

Mostly assembly. I am trying to get my 1000 point list assembled, undercoated and sprayed black by friday the 3rd of august for a doubles league game.

I have started painting the first combat squad of sniper scouts.

I'll try to take some pictures this evening ...

As promised, some pictures ...

Everything I have assembled so far: a landspeeder storm with heavy flamer, a landspeeder with heavy flamer and multi-melta, 9 assault terminators with thunderhammer and stormshield, shrike (on the picture without his backpack), 3 close combat scouts (2 more are assembled and based but still need forgeworld brass etching and undercoating) and 5 sniper scouts.

And some more pictures of the first sniper scout. I redid the cloak a bit and also added more highlights to the chest eagle.

I finished the first combat squad of sniper scouts.

I also finished the assembly of the last speeder for my 1000 point list. I magnetised it so the heavy flamer comes off, the crew can be replaced (heavy bolter might be better in 6th) and the bottom piece can come off for ease of storage. I also magnetised so it can hold the missile launcher.

In my eagerness to clean the model, I clipped off the acquila on the hood (I had to do this for my chaos space wolf speeders). I covered it up with a piece of forge world brass etching.

C&C welcome!

I also assembled the 10th terminator. I don't need it yet for the 1000 point list, but now I have a mini for testing my terminator paint scheme.

I have almost finished my first terminator. I still need to paint the purity seals but I first need to get my hands on some new red GW paints for that. I'm not sure what to do with the handle of the hammer as well. I left it black for the moment. I might try some leather first and if that doesn't work repaint it black and hightlight it with the greys.

The shield iconography doesn't look optimal (although the pictures hide it well) but I had to repaint it several times until I had a color combination that worked. I hope the next model will have a cleaner paintjob.

C&C welcome!

I like what you are doing ! ;)

How did you highlight your black, its looks real nice. Im one of those who just cant paint black.

I'm using the new GW paints. First broad highlight with eshin grey. After that a finer highlight of dawnstone.

I made some progress on my Raven Guard.

First off, the sniper scouts got some Army Painter tufts to spruce up the bases.

http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/1774/dsc08797j.jpg

I also finished the first combat squad of my assault terminators, including the sergeant.

Unfortunately, I have deciced to put the the painting of my RG on hold. I first want to add some more models to my Skyrar's Dark Wolves army as my current list will see some changes for 6th edition.

When the wolves are finished, the ravens will get some love again ...

My ravenguard will see some more love the coming months. I will be adding several units of sternguard and a ravenguard version of Pedro Kantor.

Here's the start of my Pedro Kantor model, based on the forgeworld ravenguard captain. I am looking to get my hands on some grey knight stormbolter bits for his other arm.

http://imageshack.us/a/img221/7350/dsc01641r.jpg

Since I am not yet sure what the best load out will be for the sternguard (special weapons and combi-weapons), I took the time to look how I could customize them best. I will be using the forgeworld raven guard veterans upgrade pack so making options for everything would be a costly thing.

Magnetising the weapons itself wasn't a good option as the smallest magnets I have are still to wide to put into the bolter. So for my first test, I opted to magnetise the arms and then put a piece of paperclip in the marine's fist and a tiny hole in the bolter to keep it in place.

http://imageshack.us/a/img404/6992/dsc01645t.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img685/328/dsc01648j.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img526/6532/dsc01652bh.jpg

It's a decent option but I am afraid the bolter will still fall off midplay.

Looking at it now, I think I will give it another try: magnetise the marine's left arm, glue the bolter to the marine's left arm, glue the right arm to the marine, put the piece of paperclip in the marine's right arm and the hole in the bolter. This way I will save some money on magnets. I can still switch out arms. And I can get a hold on some cheap plastic mark 6 shoulder pads for the alternative arms without needing to buy the forgeworld shoulder pads.

Any thoughts on this?
