Avatars of War - Warriors of the Apocalypse -> Chaos Marines

Hi all,

In my ongoing quest to make Chaos Space Marines look more intimidating and evil, I ordered a box of the following:

Warriors of the Apocalypse (regiment with two weapons)

Roughly four months later and the kit has finally arrived (I hear Avatars of War has been swamped by orders)

This is basically a look at how easy it is to use the kit to produce Chaos Space Marines with a more fantasy-flavoured aesthetic than the GW variety.

I'm going to be using the components to make (at a minimum) a squad of count-as Khorne Beserkers for my Word Bearers army.

Initial impressions from inspecting the sprues were good. On the whole, there was a minimum amount of flash and mould lines. Some of the belts were a bit brittle and what appeared to be an oversized cloak was overly thin in some places. However the overall quality was superb, especially compared with a pack of 10 Chain Axes I ordered from Forgeworld which have suffered from mould slippage.

I think the legs look good and don't really need green-stuffing. The torsos on the other hand are unsuitable for Chaos Marines and those from GW CSM plastic kits only need their belts removing and minimal greenstuffing to fit. The shoulder pads look very good, but I ran into an issue in that the combination of the in-one shoulder pads and arms coupled with GW torsos led to very closed poses. It was relatively easy to remove the arms and thin out the inside of the shoulder pads to the point where they would fit GW CSM arms.

One potential pit-fall with the kit, is that while there are at least four knock-out of the park heads (of which I've used two in the pics below), there aren't a huge number that are really suitable for CSMs, with at least two or three being completely out of the question.

Here are the first two models I've put together:

I will be filling in the gap between this guy's legs and torso with greenstuff soon.

I like the head & shoulder pads swap but I'm not really sold on the legs, they look too fantasy for 40k in my opinion.

So they fit in with the Helldrake! :P These are really nice, I'm just hoping they come oput with some "cleaner" models whitch could then be used for thousand son conversions.
