Grey Hunters

Well I'm sure that someone has probably posted this already or a variant of it but I'm finally going to play sixth edition and I wanted to try out some new stuff. I'm not going to give you a full list but basically ai use a Thunderwolf Lord with two other Thunderwolves, Skyclaws with a Wolf Priest, Long Fangs with Missle Launchers and a Plasma Cannon, and 3 full squads of Grey Hunters plus another hals squad with a Razorback.

The change of course was my three Grey Hunters that used to be led by Wolf Guard in Rhinos with an occasional Rune Priest. So now I'm running this:

Grey Hunter Squadx2

10 Grey Hunters

Plasma Pistol

Plasma Gunx2

Wolf Standard

Mark of the Wulfen

Power Axe

Wolf Guardx2

Plasma Pistol

Frost Axe

Rune Preist with one and Wolf Priest with the other, I also run a squad that has a melta, with a wolf guard with combi-melta and they are in a drop pod.

Now after reading some of your articeles and the rules, I'm highly considering running Saga of the Hunter with the Wolf Priest and outflanking. Plus the Rune Priest can take Prescience and Storm Caller to help out footslogging Grey Hunters. So lets hear some arguments or ideas. I'm just curious about any experience. I know that most missions have linebreaker as an additional objective and outlfanking would definitely put a touch resilient fearless unit in the enemy's backfield. Plus a ton of plasma is very helpful while re-rolling ones. Anyway, thanks for any corrections or comments.

I believe its either/or. Either you keep to the SW psychic powers (where you get to choose), or you choose the new powers (where you roll and hope for what you want).

I'm finding myself wanting to take more plasma also (where previously I preferred meltas) and have a very strong desire to convert a pack of GHs to be very catachan-wolfscout esque to be used for Outflanking along with a Wolf Priest.

Ok, thanks for the information on the two powers and after reading the FAQ it does say take two in amy combination from the three disciplines listed. I would still go with Divination since the primaris power helps make Plasma weapons more useful. I am really do like the idea of a large Grey Hunter squad outflanking. I'm a little torn on my melta squad now and it may be put into a rhino instead of a drop pod.

why a poweraxe over the sword or fist?

Kind of the best of both worlds- get the extra attack as the PW but kill things at AP 2 of the fist, for the cheaper price of the powerweapon. Since its not on a character, its hidden...

Though Id do a Frostblade over an Axe, because Id rather strike at I in challenges against other sarges.

Power Axe is the perfect weapon for Grey Hunters. See the comparison:

vs Power Sword:

+ additional strenght

+ AP 2 instead of AP 3

- it's INI 1 which isn't a big concern as GH with Axe cannot be challenged out

vs Power Fist

+ Axe is cheaper by 10 points

+ you get 2 base attacks instead of 1

- str 8 vs str 5, no instant dead, doesn't ignore FNP as fist on most units

The fact that you hit vehicles on 3's in close combat and walkers on WS with grenades means that you no longer require mandatory Power Fists in squads. Also now you don't need a good penetration roll to bring vehicles down, few glances (which krak grenades provide) are sufficient. Best thing is that now you can use kraks even against monstrous creatures!

Fists on Power Armoured Wolf Guard leaders are not so great anymore. They can get challenged out by and killed before having a chance to strike. On Terminator Wolf Guard leaders, it's a different story, you can take fists for additional punch. Nevertheless I prefer relatively cheap Power Axe / Storm Shield combo for my Terminator Wolf Guard leaders in a foot army.

Just curious, may seem a stupid question but why in 6th is plasma such a must have? I realise with the change to rapid fire it makes the guns better than meltas but why the must on plasma pistols? Am I missing something?

Thanks

taking down +2 saves, you used to do that with powerweapons.

What Max said since anything but an axe or fist is too weak for tda/armor, but also, Wolf Priests are making a comeback to allow Overwatch and Snap Fire rerolls, due to the greatest bonus, with Preferred Enemy now allowed for both melee AND shooting. Pretty much negates all those pesky Gets Hot! rolls.

Also, any character model can designate their shots on a 6, so if that shot is with a plasma pistol (or two) you can pretty much guarantee whoever you designate is a large grease stain afterward. This means WGPLs and LWs too, who both can make use of the new Gunslinger rule.
