Best combination for a storm raven?

Hello all,

As with the 6th edition release, flyers are much more prevalent(did i spell that right?) a storm raven almost seems like a must in every list.

So my question is: What is the best way to run it?

My thought is(if you have the points) give it assualt cannon, typhoon missle launcher, hurricane bolters, psybolt ammunition (just because of the sheer amount of shots it'll be able to put out!)

And do you think it's still worth as a transport?

Blood Strike Missiles, carrying Dante, 5 * Sanguinary Guard, and a any type of Bangle Dread.

:teehee:

Bangle SR > GK SR.

Not necessarily. Psy-missile can be quite useful versun Psykers, even though many players I know vehemetly want to use Look out Sir to re-allocate peril of the warp wounds even though the rulebook says it can be perfomed when a wound is "allocate" and peril of the warp wounds don't follow normal allocation procedures but that's another story ;)

Anyway I'm not very filled with enthusiams for flyers.

I just played a game with my Hybrid Draigo Wing fielding 3 flyers, two were stormravens, against Space Wolves. I won the game 7-4 victory points but the flyers didn't do a lot of things. They all survived to the end (only a Stormraven suffered a "locked velocity") but they just kill some transport and a few infantry model. None of the Stormravens payed its cost back and in the end my opponent ignored them focusing on Draigo and Paladins.

I had 545 points of flyers in a 2000 pts match and if I used those points to field other units (like Dreadknights, more troops, a TDA inquisitor etc) I would have achieved better results.

And if you don't face any Psykers, or they're in flyers themsevles, Psy-strike suck.

Blood Strike is far better, as it can also be used to kill Psykers. Along with everythign else you might meet in the game. ;)

Plus the GK 'raven didn't get Shadowed Skies updated in our FAQ to allow it to be used while zooming.

Bangles did. :teehee:

Bangles did. :)

What part of "If the Stormraven has moved flat out, passengers can still disembark, but they must do so as follows:" is unclear that needed FAQ'd? You move a bunch, take a Flat Out move, push everyone out the doors, call it good.

Flyers, page 80;

Finally, models cannot embark upon, or disembark from, a Zooming Flyer

Bangle FAQ;

Page 38 - Stormraven Gunship, Skies of Blood.

Change the first sentence to read: "If the Stormraven has moved more than 6", passangers can still disembark, but they must do so as follows."

While you can still 'Flat Out' while zooming, Flat Out is now an extra move in the shooting phase.

And you can only disembark in the Movement Phase.

So no Disembarking in the Shooting Phase when your SR moves 'Flat Out' when zooming.

*That* is why the FAQ was needed. :P

Edit: And no 'pre-empting' that you're gonna move Flat Out in the shooting Phase to allow you to use Shadowed Skis in the preceeding Movement Phase either! That's just naughty! :)

But if what we're taking the Storm Raven for is flying, fast transport... why would we want to only move 6" or 12" to disembark and still shoot? If we're coming on from reserves, and we want to drop our payload on a distant objective, how does moving a tiny amount really going to help us? Isn't it better in that instance to simply take the full move anyway, drop off the Termies/Strike Squad or Interceptors via pinpoint deepstrike, deploy your dread (mmm.. juicy sideshots and rear armor shots with the psyfleman) and then pivot to unleash havoc next turn now that there's three threats plus the rest of your army for your opponent to have to worry about?

If the point is to aggressively deploy in your opponents face with more dependability than simply just deep striking, deploy first then fall back to secondary role as gunship. If you're taking it for a flying gunship, why are you worried about when you can deploy your cargo anyway? If you want to systematically go forward a smidge but still shoot and still carry cargo... take a Land Raider :)

Wouldn't be the first time that GW has people referencing FAQ's for armies that aren't theirs for rulings on things :) Print both FAQ's, and if your opponent is that much of a dunderhead he deserves what he gets. I've never ran into a gamer that was THAT much of a stickler for things when common sense and a realistic reading of the rules and existing FAQ's shows what should be done. While it would be nice for them to clarify it in the GK FAQ, I don't think that the lack of it ruins things when it's pretty clearly spelled out in the BA FAQ.

Ah RAI! :)

Skies of Blood is a different rule to Shadowed Skies. ;) Maybe GW felt that it would be unbalanced for a unit of GK Interceptors to coming in from a zooming SR using Mystics or Servo Skulls.

But that it would be ok for Dante to do it with no scatter!

I donno. I wouldn't even bother trying to double guess those guys! :)

Sadly, RAW, our SR can't disembark while zooming.

House rule it however you want! You've got the powah! :P

I always figure that if the printed text in both paragraphs from Codex: Blood Angels and Codex: Grey Knights is the same, so we're dealing with the same logical situation, and if in instance A it is done a certain way and has been clarified as such by an official FAQ in one book, then logically the exact same FAQ ruling applies to the instance A in the other book until proven otherwise.

Skies of Blood: Rule A

Shadowed Skies: Rule A

BA FAQ: modify Rule A to say X

Ergo you have to logically modify both instances of Rule A because otherwise you are legally and logically inconsistant :)

Then again, maybe I just have good luck finding decent gamers in GW Stores...
