Ok, greeting brothers (and sisters I know you exist), this is going to be my run down of a game I played recently which also happened to be my first ever 40k game. A few things to note, I have NEVER played a table top game before and this was my first so having said that, the game I played also kinda turned into being a demo for my local hobby store. It was a 2 vs. 2 which kinda turned into a 2 vs. me very quickly. My partner was also a Space Wolves player however he wasn't very quick to catch on, being a new player as well, so I ended up taking the brunt of most of the game. I will try to give a rough list of what I ran with here.

Initially I hadn't been told how many points we were to be using so I came up with a 1,000pt army and when I got there it turned out to be 500, which turned into 750, which turned into does this feel balanced? Lol With that being said here's what I ran with.

Njal Pack

-Njal Stormcaller with Termy armor

-Five Fenrisian wolves

Wolf Guard pack

-This was my 5 pack of terminators (4 wolf claws, 5 shields, 1 Cyclone Missle Launcher)

Two Hunter packs

-Two packs of five (Basic gear on four and 1 with a meltagun in each pack)

Here was my ally's list. I don't know exactly what his gear was because he kept having to change it because it didn't follow his codex and eventually I gave up trying to follow.

Canis Wolfborn with five fen. wolves

Priest on a bike was his second HQ

And he had two hunter packs.

Let me say initially I wanted to have a Wolf Guard in charge of each hunter pack but when I saw that my opponents were rolling heavy armor I quickly had to change that plan so I could take the Cyclone Missle Launcher and slapped on the meltaguns. One more thing, I cried this whole game inside over having no long fang pack. I'm going to try and give a rough account of what my opponents had. They were rolling with normal Space Marines.

x1 Predator

x1 Whirlwind

x1 Rhino with mounted gun (squad of 5 basic marines inside)

x1 Landraider (squad of 6 basic marines and Sergeant inside)

x1 Dreadnought

x5 Jump pack troops

2 squads of five normal space marines

I started out in the bottom right hand corner and all descriptions I give will be from this point of view. My opponents line up was from right to left: Landraider, Rhino, Predator, Squad of 5 space marines, Whirlwind, dreadnought, Squad of 5 space marines and the Jump pack troops were in reserve.

1st Turn

Njal gets Calm Before the Storm, I proceed to move everything forward 6 inches, we have a broken row of terrain in the middle of the map for cover. I move to get cover from the tanks and unfortunately don't have any other choice but to leave my right hunter pack hanging out in the open. I use my cyclone missel launcher to try and hit the Landraider, it doesn't do anything and I have njal cast his bubble for the +5 save on nearby units. I didn't realize I could cast two spells in one turn so that was mistake number 3 after bad positioning and no long fang pack.

Enemies turn, they move forward, whirlwind takes a shot and misses wildly (I don't think it hit anything the whole game actually), rhino takes a shot at my termies, doesn't do anything we end the turn with no casualties.

2nd Turn

Njal gets Driving Gale for -1 BS to enemy models. (it saved my hide at least three times) My Terminators move forward about four inches to get behind a dune, I fire my cyclone again at the rhino, get a glancing blow for 1 hull point gone. I move my right hunter pack forward and try to use my meltagun it failed miserably to bad rolls (It did so throughout the fight) and now my pack is out in the open ready for the slaughter. My hunter group on the left moves forward to take cover behind a bluff in the center of the field and takes a shot at the enemy squad in the middle and doesn't hit anything. At those point I had an epiphany and realize Njal can cast two spells so I use my bubble again and succeed and my living lightning which also succeeded on the normal space marine squad but failed on wound. *sad face*

Enemies turn, Landraider takes out three of my hunters (understandable I should have run from the darn thing to begin with rather than poke it with my meltagun), Whirlwind takes another shot misses and rhino chose not to do anything this round. The dreadnought at this point started to come out of hiding to try and take down Canis but he didn't really bother with me at all until he called out his jump squad which landed right behind my left hunter pack. and took out two. Predator takes out another of my Terminators so I'm down to three now and thankfully still have my cyclone ML

Ok so turn 3

Things started to get a little crazy here so I won't give a play by play just because I can't honestly remember the order in which it happened. Njal got Murderous Hurricane which we took to mean as any enemy units within 18" (was that correct?) There were three and only one unit (a space marine) was taken out by this effect which was really disappointing. At this point I realized my wolves were doing nothing with njal and I was friggin tired of the predator picking of my termies so I detach njal from the fen wolf pack and stick him with my three remaining terminators while the wolves move north towards the predator 12". I realize running is a good option so my two remaining hunters move away from the Landraider though I know they're toast and my terminators start moving towards the jump squad. Move turn over. I shoot at the jump squad with boltguns on my termies, one gets taken out leaving four. I fire my cyclone ML at the Rhino and it gets turned into scenery and the squad inside gets to evacuate. I think my favorite part of the fight happened here. My fen wolves were 9" away I attempt to charge I roll a 6 and a 5 so plus 1 I move 12" and have four in a position to attack. I roll my hits I think i landed about 7ish? roll for damage I rolled 4 6's for a rear attack. One opponent had been watching while the guy who actually owned the tank was preoccupied with my ally so I slowly turn his tank upside down and wait for him to look over. Yeah...cuss words ensued (he promptly blew my wolf pack up during his turn LOL)

I used Jaws of the World Wolf on the jump pack unit killing two and send my terminators in to kill another before I lose to horrid rolls leaving myself with no more terminators, an undamaged Njall andtwo remains of wolf packs that got blown up during the enemies turn. Landraider chased down the remainder of my unit, I had a squad of space marines move in to take out my other squad, at which point I decided to bow out while I could with the swift destruction of my fen wolves.

I know you guys like to give lots of details on what weapons were fired, what hit, what wounded etc but truth be told, I'm amazed I remembered this much about the fight. I had a ton of fun and while I may have lost, the fact that my wolves took out a tank I thought was hilarious AND i was able to take out the rhino. Which I really thought I wouldn't even be able to take out any because of my lack of anti-armor weapons and long fangs which I think was one of my biggest mistakes.

My other was I think I should have sent Njal deeper into the frey because in the beginning I was so worried about keeping him safe in the back when a lot of his attacks need to be up closer to be utilized so that was another mistake (I think, please feel free to disagree or give advice) but all and all I'm actually pretty happy with how my first fight turned out all things considered. My terminators were useless because I couldn't get them into melee because I couldn't get the tanks down in time before they got picked off so they were a HUGE waste of points in this instance PLUS the troops they would have been effective against were on the opposite side of the table. So, I need to not be afraid of moving out of my corner because I turtled big time so...I know this was a huge post and probably not very good but for those kind souls who are patient enough to read all of this I would LOVE to get any feedback, advice, criticism, etc;

***Not done writing this, feel free to critique the roster but I will be back later to finish this post up***

EDIT:*****ALL FINISHED!!!!*****

Off the bat I feel a lot of unnecessary points were dumped into Njal at this low point level game. I would have used the points to instead pick up a Regular Rune Priest and beef up the Grey Hunter Packs.

That being said, I look forward to hearing the rest of this tale and will give further feedback. But mainly, did you have fun? As that's what matters in the end.

Also, in case I haven't already said to you in another thread, welcome to the Aett, or more commonly known as the Fang! :eek

Yeah I could see that, also having said that, he actually held out pretty well. Was planning on finishing this epic tail tonight but I am bushed so TO BE CONTINUED tomorrow ;)

EDIT: I lied I didn't like leaving it so there it is, all complete and a hot mess if I do say so myself. Would love feedback from the patient souls willing to read all of that gibberish.

EDIT #2: I love a good stein of ale so please don't be afraid that I'm a prissy sister of battle or something other than the Space Wolf at heart that I really am. I picked wolves for a reason B)

Jaws of the World Wolf on the jump pack unit killing two

did they change the wording on jaws or something , becuase in 5th jaws didnt work on jump troops.

Jump is now a sub category of infantry.

@ the OP. I think you probably learnt a lot of the mistakes you made through writing out this report/reflection. You may want to consider taking a DP for those Wolf guard just so you get them where you need them. Just make sure they aren't exposed before you get to do anything. You might find running a plasmagun in your pack will be a bit more effective.

For a first game you seemed to have done well.

Welcome to the fang brother - Slides across a plate of Krakken rings-

Can I ask what DP stands for? And as for the plasmagun I will definitely try that next time around.

EDIT: Drop Pod, nevermind. Ok...I was thinking of getting that battle pack anyways since I need some more basic packs and I'm curious to see how scouts work with the reroll edge rule so maybe I'll just go ahead and grab one of those.
