Bjorn to be wild?

Evening Brothers,

Following my initial foray into collecting and finally having decided (somewhat) on my army list, I bought a load of books in order to get up on the fluff. Having read a fair amount so far I must say I'm becoming quite a fan of Bjorn.

What are your thoughts on fielding him in an army, I know he's a bit expensive but surely someone has fielded him before.

Thoughts and opinions?

N

P.S - Sorry for bad pun topic title!

Bjorn + Ven Dread Hull Points from Appendix II in the 6th BRB seems to be the current way to go for him.

Otherwise, yes, he can be quite nice; his reroll on Gets Hot can certainly make his second life easier for him. The 5+ Invi save can do some good as well.

All that said, below 1500, he's too much. Right around 2000, he seems to be affordable. Higher, and he's pretty solid, however he may go down pretty easy. His lower I and AV13 seem to balance somewhat, just not against other Dreadnoughts with DCCW's. In CC with Krak Grenades and anything similar, he's not able to be affected, unless as I recall he is immobilized, which really hurts him.

Experience will vary; theory crafted, he's quite good. Game wise, mileage will be different.

I tend to do pretty well with him. The key is mitigating the things that can reliably take him down. Keeping him in CC with most things is a good way to go with that.

Basically, find good cover and support him with other elements of your force until you can get him where you know he can stand on his own.

Not having Extra Armor isnt as much of a liability as it used to be....

Id take him all the time if he could just ride in a Drop Pod!

What the hey? He can't take a Drop Pod?! (no book on hand)

He's never been able to take a drop pod... Except a special one from Forgeworld, I believe.

What kind of droppod would that be? Modelwise he does fit in the FW dreadnought pod, but are there special rules for that one? Is that what you refer to?

No, the Lucius Pattern Drop Pod is what hes talking about- a DP that allows a dread to assault out of it, baring a dangerous terrain test, and counts as a FA slot all its own.

If I were doing it, I'd Lucius pod him, although there's something to be said for giving him his own personal Iron Priest and thrall/cyberwolf contingent to back him up, too, so he can be repaired and have hull points returned to him on the field.

I echo the above advice: get him stuck in and keep him stuck in, just be careful what you put him up against. Pairing him with the Iron Priest allows you one other opportunity: if the Iron Priest and his retinue happens to charge the same unit at the same time as Bjorn, you could technically "challenge away" any power/chain fists or thunder hammers to the Iron Priest, who you technically could mount on a Thunderwolf, giving him a toughness add and the option of striking at I with rending instead of I 1 with his hammer and servo arm. True, it'd be a tremendous pointsink, but if I was going to footslog Bjorn, and I was concerned he'd end up getting shot up or fisted, that's how I'd mitigate the threats. Expensive, but fluffy. You could even model the thralls and cyberwolves to look like the critters described in Battle of the Fang, for true maximum fluffiness.

Or just Lucius pod him into an area in the enemy's backfield with some nearby cover, walk him into said cover (since he isn't assaulting, no dangerous terrain test), and shoot some rear armor. Cheaper, but you risk him being left alone on the other side of the board, killed, and an objective you seriously have to hold once he is brought down.

I'd take him every single game if he could ride in a standard Drop Pod. The Lucious-pattern is certainly better, but as it is Forgeworld rules you run into potential issues with opponents who prefer to play with the "core rules". It wouldn't help in tournaments, as I doubt many of those would allow Forgeworld units, either.

It was nice to see the return of Bjorn after an 8 year absence from the codex, and I think Phil did a great job capturing his epic stature, but failing to give him the Drop Pod option was a huge oversight and creates a significant drawback for a model/unit that really needs to mobility.

Valerian

Well i havnt used him in 6th but i ran him quite a bit in 5th and i couldnt get him killed.

I play against dark eldar a lot and he just refused to die. He was immoblised, had weapons blown off,

but would not die. Dark lances just bounced off of him left and right. It was amazing.

I definately wanna try him in 6th. He should be easier to kill and fearless is so much better now.
