Wolf Priests

With the changes in 6th edition Im thinking I will be running a Wolf Priest as my Warlord in the majority of my games. They bring so much to the table now and their drawbacks are minimal. I've had a terminator chaplain converted into WP that I've never run before but now I cant wait to field him. Some of the benefits off the top of my head.

1. Built in Invul save.

2. No Retreat gone.

3. Preferred Enemy rerolls for plasma shots.

4. Saga of the Hunter. :)

The only negatives I can think of are can't take Thunderwolf Mount and Crozius is only AP 4. Still with TDA, concussive, and +2 str you can give him Saga of the Beastslayer and make him a IC/MC destroyer!

So my question, are they the best choice for Warlord in the SW army or is WL still tops?

It really depends on your force. I've run a WP as my warlord a few times, but those were games where I didn't run my TWL - too many warlord traits benefit my TWC unit for me to pass up the TWL when I take him.

It's not a bad choice though, and you certainly shouldn't dismiss him as warlord material, especially if you're not already planning to take a lord.

He is a real good value, too. Mine is only 150 points, and I've got him relatively pimped out. He makes a great Warlord for smaller games (even up to 1750), where points are at a premium. I'm saving Ragnar for larger games (1,850 or 2k). He gives you a lot for your investment, which is nice when considering effeciency/effectiveness.

Sage of the hunter cant be taken with TDA.

Never can tell who knows/remembers and who simply don't, so I'll just say it.

Buying tda for a WP is a waste, considering they already benefit from a 4++ save and equipped with a power weapon as standard. Giving them runic armor instead, at the same cost, maintains the 2+ save and allows them to keep their grenades, use SoH, and Sweeping Advance rule (as well as more vehicle and unit attachment options).

That said, I will confess that I have a WP TDA because it looks badass.

I have one without TDA too.

As for whether its worth the points I would argue it is if you are taking the WP as your warlord. Seeing as how in 6th power weapons are weaker and keeping your Warlord alive keeps a VP from your opponent the 2+ save is vital. No Warlord should be fielded IMO without a 2+ save and and invul save. Its too risky not to protect your Warlord as much as you can.

Buying tda for a WP is a waste, considering they already benefit from a 4++ save (Wolf Amulet, and better than tda 5++) and equipped with a power weapon as standard. Giving them runic armor instead, at the same cost, maintains the 2+ save and allows them to keep their grenades, use SoH, and Sweeping Advance rule (as well as more vehicle and unit attachment options).

So...just in case you misread.

Im not disagreeing with you. I wasn't arguing what's the best wargear for WP I was trying to see if they're better Warlords than Wolf Lords. I only mention the TDA cause I like the model. I agree runic is great too.

I just used a Wolf Priest with Hunter, Plasma Pistol and Wolf Tooth Necklace.

He joined a unit of 10 Grey Hunters, with two Plasmaguns, one Plasma Pistol, a Power Axe and a Wulfen.

To top it off they were joined by a Wolf Guard with dual Plasma Pistols.

I didn't use them optimally, but they demolished a Nurgle biker unit of 7 with Chaos Lord (with the help of some ML Long Fangs). Then they got outflanked by some Nurgle Chosen who did quite a bit of damage, but still managed to kill them off and take an critical objective for me.

So all in all they did fairly well, but I will need to test them a bit more.

The ability to not give him a thunderwolf isn't that bas you can give him a bike and he can just roll with thunder wolf cavalries anyways. I'm currently liking the change to the chrozium (+2 str) as he is now str 6 attacking the back of a vehicle in assault, much better than his previous strength 4. Sure might have lost lost the no armor saves, but gaining extra vehicle destruction doesn't make me sad.
