Feeling nostalgic.

Recommended Posts

So I sat down in my hobby room today and before I set to work I took a second and remembered some of the simple things that made me love this hobby years ago.

Does anybody else love the smell of the old 90's era GW paint as much as me?

Remember the feeling of invulnerability caked up super glue on your fingers gave you? Like you could use any razor and not be harmed?

That "mother of god" moment you had when you assembled your first large mini (land raider, leman russ, basalisk ect.)

Winning your first game against a competent player, not your little brother or friends that you taught how to play the day before.

Day dreaming about being an 8 ft tall genetically modified super human.

Or am I just admitting to potentially embarrasing inner thoughts?

I've always found GW paints to be rather rank smelling - if not positively vile. Most acrylic paints are - it's to do with pigment compounds - yellows, reds and blues especially.

It wasn't the superglue that gave my fingers invulnerability but the calloused scarring from decades of use/misuse.

I had mother-of-god moments with 1/35 scale modern separate track links and suspension tank kits. To me, GW models were basic, beginner kits that barely needed instructions. I had to teach some people the skills that were second nature to me (use of rubber bands for one).

Winning against a competent player? Still to happen. Not a lot of competence around the 40k crowd hereabouts. Stopped playing the game, so it's not going to happen now anyway. Never played against siblings/family (I'm the only gamer in my or my wife's families) and amongst friends we never took it seriously enough to care about wins/losses.

I think it's just you for the last bit.

Well, I still do get a giggle when talking with others about how long each of us has been in the hobby and I say, "Uh, well, when I got in, 40K hadn't been invented yet..."

The usual response is, "Yeah, I...um, wait, that's like..."

Me: "Yeah, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away". :(

I don't actually remember the smell of the paints, but whenever I encounter it I do get a good nostalgic feeling.

"Uh, well, when I got in, 40K hadn't been invented yet..."

Oh that brings back a memory..

Totally legal lass with huge melons wearing a leather corset: "So how long have you been into fantasy and gaming and stuff?"

Me: "X"

TLLWTMWALC: "I was born in X!"

Me: *cries*

I may have only been in the hobby for a few years, but I fondly remember the feeling of triumph when I bought the Assault on Black Reach set. No longer would I be one of those odd chaps who goes in only to respond to the Standard Template greeting of' "Hi there! Looking for anything in particular?" with a non-committal, "Just having a look, thanks," no, from now on I would answer with a gleeful, "Yeah, I need a new Mechrite Red, my one's almost used up and do you have one of the old Kruellagh The Vile models anywhere? Let me show you my Reaver Jetbikes, I need some suggestions as to which spot colour I should use to make them stand out. Oh wow, are those the new Deff Dreads? Sweet Defiler conversion, that looks way better than a Brass Scorpion..."

And of course, I remember joining the B&C, the only forum I've been active on for more than a year without hopping off somewhere else.

Od.

Pics or it didn't happen :)

anyway: I'm only in the hobby for a small 4years now ( time flies, holy terra... ), but I still get that feeling whenever I (succesfully) assemble a large model ( had it this weekend when I finished my LRC :) )
