Help Needed: How Do You Airbrush New Citadel Paints?

Recommended Posts

As the title says, how are people airbrushing these things? I have no problem with Vallejo Air paints with Vallejo Thinner Medium, but I can never get these to work.

I have an Iwata airbrush, and a small compressor (10-19 PSI). Is there a difference from thinning the layer paints and base paints?

Also, if anyone knows a good way to scrub and clean the inside of the airbrush that'd be awesome as well. I'm fairly new to all of this if you cant tell.

Same way I airbrush any other paint, Vallejo air are made for airbrushing so if that is what you are familiar with you may not be thinning regular paints enough. I have only airbrushed caliban green but roughly 1:1 with the vallejo thinner was what I used I believe and somewhere under 20psi.

Airbrushing the new gw paints is easier than most people are letting on. The pigment content of the new paints is pretty high, so over-thinning them isnt much of a risk. The only trouble people are seeming to encounter is actually under-thinning. As GumbaFish stated a 1:1 mix is usually the way to go. In my personal experience 1:1 sometimes hasent even been enough (a testament to some good quality paint). The PSI that I usually run the gw stuff at is around 18-22 depending on what size needle I am using (usually a .32mm).

Just keep messing with those ratios and find your sweet spot.

"Perfect airbrush cleaner" This stuff is pretty damn amazing. I just break down my airbrushes and let them soak in this stuff overnight. After that a light scrubbing with a toothbrush and some interior cleaning with a pipe cleaner it gets them shiny and lemon scented (well not lemon scented)... It comes in a smallish bottle, so I recommend buying two or three.

Also if you don't have some get some brushes for cleaning your airbrush, they look like this. I can't comment on how to clean a gunked up one though as I never put mine away dirty, good cleaning habits are reallly importance for proper functioning and longevity of the airbrush.

Ran across this thread as I am researching using GW paint in the airbrush.

So, you guys have had no trouble with using any of the new GW paints through an AB? What mix are you using to thin?

I have read people use all kind of thinning mixes. Typically, it looks like people use something like 90%/10% H20 to alcohol to thin, and then Liquitex Airbrush Medium. Is that similar to what you guys use?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I had some issues earlier this evening trying to use the Imperial Primer with my airbrush, its hellish thick paint so I thin it about 2:1, with windex. My problem was that when I tried to prime my DA Company Master, the paint wasn't going on uniformly and was 'beading' on the surface of the mini. (It was not spatter) The mini is a Finecast one, so I had washed, rinsed and dried it yesterday. I thought maybe it was the windex, so I made a fresh batch thinned with water and had the same problem. It takes quite a while to dry too. I was patient though, and after 3-4 coats and a long wait to fully dry, it has dried to a nice even matt finish. Do you think maybe my paint was too thin or could it be something else?

<Edit> Fixed some late night typos

I can't comment on how to clean a gunked up one though as I never put mine away dirty,

If you have a really gunked up one (or just don't want to scrub with brushes) try taking it apart and putting it in an ultrasonic bath, something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/ULTRA-ULTRASONIC-S...1374&sr=8-3

You should be able to find one cheaper if you shop around, they will most likely be sold as jewellery cleaners on the high street.
