What If: Horus Heresy movie chain/HBO series

Hi there,

first of all, I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section of the forum ( tried using " search " to see where and if there are more posts about this particular subject, found none sofar ), if not, apologies in advance.

Secondly, English is not my main language, so please have patience with any hick-ups in spelling and sentenc(e)ing :P

On topic:

Being a fan of the HH series like most of you, I had this ongoing discussion with a friend of mine about how cool ( or not cool ) it would be if the HH serie got converted into motion picture if there were sufficient funds for it. The following topics where raised, and I thought it would be nice to see what veterans like you guys would think about it  :

* Movie chain or tv series:

Being a fan of both, I find this a tricky one.

With movies, you can go onto the big screen, reaching a wider audience, have the really cool actors, etc. Downside ( at least to me ) is the part that in movies, you can't really give the depth and development of characters and storyline. Another downside to movies ( which can turn positive though ) is the time required to make them.

With tv series, you can go indepth on characters and storyline, you have a weekly / 2 weekly " to be continued " to keep the fans from going " Angron " style :D . Downside might be sloppiness cause of the timeframe series get shot, lower budget, etc.

* Real actors or Animated:

This is also a tricky one...on one hand, I would love to see some of my favorite actors playing the roles of the primarchs ( coming to that later ) and the hero's / villains of the stories. Only problem to that, is you can do only so much with the rescources at hand. Yes we have CGI and stuff, but still...With the movies/series animated, you can really do ANYTHING. No need for funky stunts, funky camera play like LotR, and you can really make it as dark and gritty and dirty as you like. ( Think Final Fantasy movies or DoW intro's. )

* Script writer(s):

For me, that's a no-brainer: ADB together with Graham McNeill. Most of you will probably brand me for a Heretic for not including Dan Abnett, but in my opinion, mister Abnett is the weakest writer concerning Space Marine stories / sagas, and to me, he should stick to Imperial Guard novels. No offence.

* The Horus Heresy itself: what to include and what not.

Let's face it, the HH is HUGE! So many stories, so many subplots, so many things all at once...what would you actually cover? This by far is the hardest part of what you actually want to show. The friend I was having this discussion with, said they should do the first 3 books, and I have to agree to it to some extent. It's pretty straight forward, it sticks to the bulk of the fluff at hand, and it won't confuse people too much that haven't read any ( or all ) of the books sofar, but still know the key things they get from their corebook / codex fluff. I would, however, include material from " A Thousand Sons " and " Know no Fear " ( haven't read the latter yet, only heard things from said friend ), since to me, they describe two very imortant moments in the HH saga.

* Bonus discussion: The Primarchs and their portraying actors.

This is the discussion we had the most, and the most fun with, and was also very tricky, due to the nature and personality of the Primarchs.

If there is ever going to be above discussion topic, who would play who?

My personal favorites sofar:

Lion El'Jonson: Alexander Skarsgard IMDB

Fulgrim: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau IMDB

Perturabo: Vin Diesel ( by lack of anyone <_< )

Jaghatai Khan: Ken Watanabe IMDB

Leman Russ: Sean Bean

Rogal Dorn: To be honest, no idea

Konrad Curze: Nicolas Cage

Sanguinius: eighter Chris Hemsworth ( dude that plays Thor ) or Brad Pitt

Ferrus Manus: Ray Stevenson

Angron: Now here's where the fun starts  eighter Tom Hardy, Jason Statham, Vinnie Jones, Russel Crowe, Ray Stevenson or a beefed up wrestler with actual acting skills.

Roboute Guilliman: Iain Glen IMDB

Mortarion: Liam Neeson

Magnus the Red: Absolutely no idea

Horus: Jim Caviezel ( by lack of anyone )

Lorgar: Michael Cerveris IMDB

Vulkan: Michael Duncan Clarke

Corvus Corax: Christian Bale

Alpharius Omegon: Absolutely no idea

Well, this is the end of the topic...hoping to see some replies to see what your thoughts are about it :)

Cya around :)

I think with the advent of direct studio-produced movies, like Forward Unto Dawn (which looks pretty good for having been handled by MS itself), GW could actually go that route. Pick up lesser known actors (there was at least Stargate actor I saw in the Dawn trailer, Varro from SGU) to get similar talent. I doubt that the HH would ever come to the big screen, though - the concept of god-like beings as generals in context of the 40k universe is not something that I think would be immediately appreciated or even appealing to the wider audience. I can, however, see a Band of Brothers/Name a War movie style film/tv series to kick things off for the Warhammer big-screen productions.
Leman Russ: Sean Bean

Problem : Leman Russ was one of the last of the Primarchs to die. Sean Bean always plays a character who dies early in a production. Sean Bean can not play Leman Russ... :tu:

Sean Bean should be Ferrus, first to go, as is Sean Bean in numerous things

Sean Bean actually fits the personality of Rogal Dorn best. He's quite intense.

However, I don't think I can take this thread suggestions serious since the roles look a little off to the personalities of the Primarchs:

Nicholas Cage as Night Haunter? Really? Nicholas Cage shouldn't ever have become an actor let alone being caste playing a character based upon the one played by Marlon Brando in one of the greatest films of all time!

If I'm going to be honest, I'm not sure on whether this is board appropriate, as I just know it will go off on a tangent by the time I've finished typing this post! As such, I will keep an eye on this thread as will, I suspect, other mods.

First of all, liam neeson is the emperor. PERIOD.

Secondly, whoever called Dorn a meathead will soon be having a close encounter of the crusading kind by some men in black.

Thirdly, Ferrus is an always condescending, sneering bald man, therefore he should be played by jason statham.

Fourthly, Vin diesel should not be in this list. He can play as extra marine number seven or something.

Fifthly, Nicholas cage is crazy enough to be Curze, lol

Sixthly (making up words now), leman russ should be played by the guy who played leonidas.

Honestly, this movie should be animated. You'd be using cgi 65 percent of the time anyway in a live action movie.

Rogal Dorn should be played by Brock Lesnar........or some other meat head. Big, arrogant, and not really good at what he does.

Item Primaris, Brock was a World Heavyweight Champion in both mixed martial arts and professional wrestling, so I am unsure how you can claim he is "not really good at what he does". Unless you're referring to his quixotic attempt to be an NFL player.

Item Secundus, as of the release of Horus Rising, by Dan Abnett, Rogal Dorn officially, in canon has the finest military mind of any of the primarchs, so you're way off base there too.

Item Tertius, while I agree we should look to the Prophecy to find our Curze, I don't think it should be Aragon. I believe we need a combination of Christopher Walken and Special Effects. Basically how they made the Neil Gaiman Beowulf movie.

"Sometimes, I rip the heads off little girls, and the only thing you can count on, from now till the end of the universe, is never knowing WHY! Come join the Night Lords! I can get you in, you'll love it! You can stay up late, eat ice cream every night, and KILL for all eternity! "

Yeesh, the nick cage thing was a joke guys chill out

Wade Garret, Curze played by Walken is hilariously awesome!

I can see Ron perlman as magnus or even pertuabo as he's pretty good at playing as a misunderstood character. Hell he'd even be a great vulkan (salamanders =/= people of african descent). In fact, james earl jones could make a great horus (remember, i'm thinking cgi wise).

Emperor- liam neeson

Horus- James Earl Jones

Curze- christopher walken

Ferrus mannus- jason statham

Magnus- ron perlman

Guillman- patrick stewart

Corax- viggo mortensen

Russ- Brian Blessed

Pertuabo- michael clarke duncan

Fulgrim- Robert Downey jr.

Angron- Gerard Butler

Dorn- sean bean

Sanguinis- Bruce willis?

Vulkan- Hugo weaving

Lorgar- Samuel L. Jackson

Much as I think this sort of subject is, well, naff, doesn't go anywhere and is essentially wishlisting, I feel like throwing my hat in the ring. :(

IMHO, it would be better that this was a CGI venture as opposed to being filmed as having actors that are possibly octogenarians or older portray a primarch sounds kinda silly without the aid of computer animation, so we might as well go the whole hog. Also, I would much prefer a serial rather than a feature as you can spread the stories out and not be confined to a single narrative.

Who should write it? A D-B is a popular choice and not one I'd eschew tbh but there are many great script writers out there that could do a wonderful job: Damon Lindelof for example has produced some great scripts in recent years (maybe not flawless, but great nonetheless); the Nolan Brothers are another great example, handling the Batman trilogy, imho, expertly. I wouldn't rule out the likes of Joss Whedon, either, as fertile a mind his is.

Angron: Now here's where the fun starts ;) eighter Tom Hardy, Jason Statham, Vinnie Jones, Russel Crowe, Ray Stevenson or a beefed up wrestler with actual acting skills.

Tom Hardy. Out of that group he's got the most ability to play differing roles well (Crowe has played a few differing roles well but I can't shake the fact that it's Crowe on the screen, not the character he's playing). Hardy's a proper character actor, I think, and can change his body mass to fit whatever his next role requires.

Ron Perlman as Magnus,

Doesn't sound right to me. Ron Perlman as Malcador, though, that would be cool. Fits him to a T. For Magnus, I'd be inclined to say have Jeremy Irons for him. I think he has the right kind of gravitas that Magnus needs (voice-wise).

if im not mistaken there was a thread such as this about 2-3 years ago...

There's a thread on this on a yearly basis, if not more so. It's quite a common subject, really. :)

I remember this from last year, but my casting has changed:

emperor-liam neeson

malcador-derek jacoby/sir ian mckellan/christopher lee

dorn-sean bean

leman russ-hugh jackman, viggo mortenson, chris hemsworth

gulliman-christian bale, simon baker

khan-ken watanabe/cary -hiroyuki tagawa (evil sorceror from mortal kombat)
